‘If anyone can expand markets beyond top 10 cr Indians...': Zerodha's Nithin Kamath on Jio-BlackRock's broking biz move
Online brokerage platform Zerodha's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nithin Kamath, in a social media post on LinkedIn, said that Jio-BlackRock entering the stock broking business is 'great news,' highlighting the need for wider participation in the Indian markets. According to Nithin Kamath, the Indian market is limited to only the nation's top 10 crore people participating due to the lack of wider audience reach. 'Many people asked me about Jio-BlackRock getting a stockbroking license. Firstly, this is great news. The biggest issue for the Indian markets is a lack of breadth in participation. We're largely limited to the top 10 crore Indians,' said Kamanth in his LinkedIn post. He said that if any company can expand the current market, it is Jio-BlackRock with its distribution power. 'If anyone can expand the markets beyond the top 10 crore Indians, it's probably Jio with all its distribution might. As for how many new Indian investors have the money to invest in the market, I don't know,' he said. Kamath focused on how Zerodha is not chasing"vanity metrics," and its idea is to stay profitable and stick to the principles and philosophies that have gotten it this far. 'At the heart of our philosophy is to always do the right thing for customers,' said Kamath in his LinkedIn post on 2 July 2025. Zerodha's philosophy is not to push customers to trade and ensure that there are no unnecessary notifications, dark patterns, etc, highlighted Kamath, stating that success over the long term has better odds if customers trade less. 'We understand that in the long term, the odds of success are better if customers trade less; most of our product decisions are based on this. We're not interested in acquiring customers using one plan and changing the pricing later,' said Kamath in his post. Zerodha CEO also said that the company is not in a hurry and is working for the 'long haul' to offer the best products and help the customers grow with the brokerage. However, Nithin Kamath also highlighted that the same can not be said about other financial services businesses in the sector, who are constantly seeking to grow their business at any cost. 'And yeah, I still feel our real competition is going to be more from first-generation founders who are running, breathing, and always thinking about broking. I somehow don't feel it is really going to be from incumbents. This is not a business where having deep pockets means you have a large moat,' said Kamath, sharing his perspective through the LinkedIn post.

Govt raises cost inflation index to 376, boosts tax relief on asset sales
New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has increased the cost inflation index (CII) used for calculating inflation-adjusted asset prices, allowing taxpayers to claim greater relief on long-term capital gains. As per the latest notification, the CII has been revised to 376 for the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), up from 363 in the previous year. The cost inflation index helps adjust the purchase price of an asset to account for inflation. This adjustment reduces the taxable capital gain, which is calculated as the difference between the sale price and the inflation-adjusted purchase price. A higher index means a higher adjusted cost, which, in turn, lowers the tax burden on sellers. This revised index will apply for FY26 and the assessment year 2026-27, when tax returns for income earned in FY26 will be filed. The purpose behind using this method is to ensure that capital gains tax is charged only on real profits and not on gains caused by inflation. However, there have been changes to the overall rules regarding indexation. As part of the government's tax simplification efforts, the Finance Act of 2024 introduced new rules for capital gains tax. Under the updated rules, indexation benefits will mainly be available for assets sold before July 23, 2024. For sales made after this date, resident individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) can still claim indexation benefits -- only if the asset was acquired before July 23, 2024. In such cases, they can choose to pay a 20 per cent long-term capital gains tax with indexation, instead of the new flat 12.5 per cent rate without indexation. However, this option is not available to non-resident Indians (NRIs), companies, or limited liability partnerships (LLPs), who must follow the new flat-rate system. The revision in the inflation index comes as a relief for many taxpayers looking to sell long-term assets like land, property, or shares, especially those who are still eligible for indexation under the grandfathering clause.

Rupee eases amid weakness in equities
Indian Rupee fell today as some weakness in local stocks weighed on the currency. INR currently trades at 85.67 per US dollar, down 8 paise on the day. The US dollar edged up a bit after dropping to lowest level in over three and half years. Fed Chair Powell reaffirmed a data-dependent stance while acknowledging tariff-linked inflation as a limiting factor. The Senates narrow approval of a tax-and-spending bill, projected to balloon the national debt by $3.3 trillion, added to market anxiety and kept the US currency under check. Meanwhile, the domestic equity benchmarks ended with modest losses today, weighed down by ongoing uncertainty surrounding the India-US trade talks. Investors remained cautious, adopting risk-off approach. As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 287.60 points or 0.34% to 83,409.69. The Nifty 50 index lost 88.40 points or 0.35% to 25,453.40.
