
Sainsbury's shoppers urged to lock Nectar card points
Back in February, the supermarket introduced a new 'Spend Lock' security feature to its Nectar loyalty app.
The move was put in place as a way to prevent points from being spent by anyone other than the primary account holder.
This meant loyalty members could 'freeze' their points while also choosing to set where their points could be spent.
It comes as in January, an investigation by the Daily Mail's This Is Money, found Sainsbury's customers had lost an estimated 12.5 million Nectar points (worth more than £63,000 over the past year) by fraudsters accessing their accounts.
But now, Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at Eset is urging shoppers to monitor their account activity "frequently to detect and report any unauthorised actions promptly".
He told The Sun: "It is especially important to monitor accounts more often just before Christmas as this is usually when criminals target accounts with points that have been accumulated over the year."
Elsewhere, consumer expert Martyn James explained to the publisher that many people will be "unaware" that their Nectar points have disappeared.
He shared: "That's because we rarely look at the app or check the total on our receipts."
Martyn continued: "Download the latest version of the app and activate the lock feature.'
If you haven't locked your Nectar points yet and are wondering how, it's easy - you can do so on the Nectar card app (available for free on the Apple store or Google Play).
Once logged in, on your profile icon, head to 'settings' and then tap 'lock or unlock spending'.
You then swipe the bar to either 'unlock' or 'lock', depending on your preferences.

Additionally, customers can continue to earn points as they shop even when spending is locked.
A Nectar spokesperson said: "Nectar is one of the UK's biggest loyalty schemes, with over 23 million members.

Sainsbury's and Morrisons told to make major change in stores as warning issued
A report from the BBC showed Sainsbury's and Morrisons were displaying posters and video screens showing heated tobacco products Sainsbury's and Morrisons have been told to stop "advertising and promoting" heated tobacco products. Heated tobacco products produce vapours containing nicotine, rather than smoke. In the UK, the advertising and promotion of tobacco products has been banned since 2002. This applies to all tobacco products that can be "smoked, sniffed, sucked or chewed". However, a report from the BBC in February this year showed Sainsbury's and Morrisons were displaying posters and video screens showing heated tobacco products. Both supermarkets said at the time that they believed the adverts were legal - with Morrisons arguing that the ban did not apply to heated tobacco products as they do not produce smoke. The BBC has now obtained a new statement from the Government which clarified that the ban does include heated tobacco products, and said it has written to the supermarkets. The BBC said the advertisements were still on display this month. A Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) spokesperson told the BBC: "In May, we wrote to supermarkets reiterating that the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act 2002… applies to all tobacco products currently on the market, and formally requested they stop advertising and promoting heated tobacco products in stores.' A spokesperson for Sainsbury's told the BBC it remained in close contact with the Government, while Morrisons said it was reviewing the letter. The Mirror has contacted Sainsbury's and Morrisons for comment. The Government is expected to ban all tobacco and vape advertising and sponsorship when it passes the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which is currently at the committee stage in the House of Lords. It comes after a ban on disposable vapes was introduced on June 1, which makes it illegal for any retailer to sell them. The ban applies to both online and in-store sales across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Rogue traders who continue to sell them risk a fine of £200 in the first instance, followed by an unlimited fine or jail time for repeat offending. Retailers are still allowed to sell reusable vapes. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said usage among young vapers remained too high, and the ban would 'put an end to their alarming rise in school playgrounds and the avalanche of rubbish flooding the nation's streets'. Figures from the charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) suggests the number of vapers in Great Britain who mainly use single-use devices fell from 30% in 2024 to 24% in 2025. The use of disposables by 18 to 24-year-old vapers fell from 52% in 2024 to 40% in 2025.

PayPoint offers Counter Cash for free with no ATM fees
As bank branches close and many ATMs bring in fees, getting at your cash for free is increasingly difficult in many areas. So called 'cash deserts' have sprung up in many villages and residential areas, as large stretches have no access to cash - or only ATMs that charge - often fees of around £2, even for a withdrawal of £10. Now, convenience shops may have the answer. Around 30,000 shops across the UK now have PayPoint terminals, where customers can pay bills, drop off parcels, use energy credit vouchers, top up gas cards, electricity keys or Smart Meter cards. Now, a growing number are also offering cash - from 1p to £50 - without a charge, and without customers even needing to make a purchase. It's particularly useful for account holders who may have less than £10 or £30 in an account, as they can get smaller amounts out in coins, a bit at a time. PayPoint Counter Cash gives access to cash at thousands of shops across the country, as parenting blogger Men Behaving Dadly shared this week. He said: "If you're anything like me, you really lose your s*** when you finally find an ATM and it's one of those that fleece you for a £1.85 fee before you can get your own money out. Somehow, I've only just discovered that loads and loads of convenience stores with PayPoint (they're literally everywhere, only outnumbered by vape shops and Costa) offer something called 'Counter Cash.'

Warning issued to Sainsbury's customers after two years of Nectar points stolen
Experts have issued a fresh warning to Sainsbury's customers after a shopper reported having two years of her Nectar points stolen. This is Money revealed earlier this year that Nectar had introduced a 'lock' feature on its loyalty card scheme, meaning any account can be freezed until the customer decides to spend their reward points. The announcement came after an investigation revealed that 12.5 million Nectar points worth nearly £63,000 had been stolen from our readers over the period of a year. And just last week, another customer reported on social media that 3,000 points had been stolen from her account after they were used in a Twickenham branch. She posted: 'Someone has stolen 3,000 of my Nectar points? 'I have never been to Twickenham in my life and I have been saving these points for two years to help pay for Christmas. Please look into this.' The claims have prompted cybersecurity experts to urge customers to take a fresh look at their accounts in order to prevent potentially criminal activity. 'It's especially important to monitor accounts more often just before Christmas,' Jake Moore, Eset's Global Security Advisor told The Sun. 'This is usually when criminals target accounts with points that have been accumulated over the year.' He added that accounts should be checked 'frequently to detect and report any unauthorised actions promptly'. Only primary users of the account should be able to lock and unlock spending on their Nectar accounts with the new locking feature, while additional collectors will only be able to collect points. It was brought in to allow customers to start saving their points again without fear of them being stolen by fraudsters. Thankfully most of the customers affected in This is Money's investigation were refunded by Sainsbury's, which owns Nectar. A Nectar spokesperson today told MailOnline: 'Nectar is one of the UK's biggest loyalty schemes, with over 23 million members.
