Fifa Women's World Cup expanded to 48 teams from 2031

Malay Mail10-05-2025
PARIS, May 10 — The Women's World Cup will be expanded from 32 to 48 teams, like the men's competition, starting with the 2031 edition, Fifa announced yesterday.
The Fifa Council unanimously agreed to enlarge the competition 'given the remarkable recent strides made by women's football across the world,' the sport's governing body said.
The 48-team tournament will adopt a 12-group format, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104 and extending the tournament by one week, Fifa said.
Fifa President Gianni Infantino said the expansion followed the success of the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, won by Spain.
'The Fifa Women's World Cup 2023, the first in which teams from all confederations won at least one game and teams from five confederations reached the knockout stage, among many other records, set a new standard for global competitiveness,' said Infantino.
'This is not just about having 16 more teams playing ... but taking the next steps in relation to the women's game in general by ensuring that more Fifa Member Associations have the chance to benefit from the tournament to develop their women's football structures,' he said.
'This decision ensures we are maintaining the momentum in terms of growing women's football globally.'
The 2027 tournament in Brazil, which will be the tenth edition of the women's event, will remain at 32 teams.
Fifa have still to ratify the 2031 and 2035 hosts.
The 2031 edition is expected to take place in the United States, sole candidate to host the tournament.
The United Kingdom, including 2023 finalists England, are bidding to host the 2035 event.
'I can confirm as part of the bidding process that we received one bid for 2031 and one valid bid for 2035,' Infantino said last month.
The men's tournament will be expanded to 48 teams for the World Cup in 2026, to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
On Friday, the Fifa Council also adopted new anti-racism measures notably by increasing fines.
Federations will also have to bring their own Disciplinary Code into compliance, and Fifa can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if they believe national sanctions are insufficient, as is the case in doping cases.
The 211 Fifa Council members were also informed about preparations for the 75th Fifa Congress that will take place on May 15 in Asunción, Paraguay.
The Fifa Council also approved the strategy to support Afghan women footballers, which includes the creation of an Afghan Women's Refugee Team (AWRT).
'Fifa is engaging directly with the relevant players,' football's governing body said.
'This is a landmark initiative,' added Infantino.
'Fifa is committed to giving every girl the possibility to play football.' — AFP

Man Utd are in ‘no man's land' due to constant managerial churn, says Rashford

LONDON, Aug 13 — Manchester United's exiled forward Marcus Rashford has delivered a scathing assessment of the Premier League side's struggles, saying the club remains stuck in 'no man's land' due to constantly changing coaches with different philosophies. Rashford has not played for United since December after a fallout with coach Ruben Amorim, with the England international spending the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before joining Barcelona on another loan deal last month. The 27-year-old, once the lynchpin of United's attack, said the last few months away from the Old Trafford side have allowed him to 'take a step back' and analyse why the club which finished a lowly 15th last season has been floundering. 'People say that we've been in a transition for years but to be in a transition you have to start the transition. The actual transition hasn't started yet,' Rashford said on The Rest is Football podcast. 'When Liverpool went through this, they got (Juergen) Klopp and they stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning, people only remember his final few years when he was competing with (Manchester) City and winning the biggest trophies. 'To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. This is where I speak about being realistic about what your situation is. We've had that many different managers, ideas and strategies in order to win that you end up in no man's land.' United have not won the Premier League title since 2012-13, the last season of manager Alex Ferguson's career before he retired, while Liverpool have now equalled their tally of 20 league titles. United's managerial carousel since Ferguson's exit has included David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, with each bringing vastly different playing styles. 'When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy,' Rashford said. 'They'd all understand the principles of playing the Man United way. Any team that's been successful over a period of time, they have principles that mean that any coach or player that comes in has to align to or add to the principles.' United have won several cups since their last league title, but Rashford attributed them to squad quality rather than systematic success. 'At times, I feel like United were hungry to win so we'll always try to adapt and sign players that fit the system. But that was reactionary,' Rashford added. 'If your direction is always changing you can't expect to win the league. You might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you have a good coach, good players and match winners in your team.' — Reuters

Spurs offer shot at London training dream to three Malaysian teens

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Three lucky young local footballers will have the opportunity to train at the training centre of one of the English Premier League's top clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, in London. Through the Dashing Talent Scholarship programme, a men's grooming brand, the three players will be selected from among 120 shortlisted participants aged 15 to 18 to train at one of the world's most prestigious football development institutions. 'We urge young talents who are interested to submit a short video clip showcasing their football skills. 'These video clips can be sent to the official Instagram and TikTok accounts of the Dashing Talent Scholarship (@biasiswabakatdashing),' Dashing said in a statement today. According to the statement, an expert coaching panel will evaluate all entries and shortlist the 120 most promising players to attend a talent identification camp at Arena Sukan Kuala Lumpur here in October. The statement added that the camp will be run by Tottenham Hotspur's global development coaches and will feature a series of structured assessments, intensive training sessions, and talent development programmes aimed at identifying players with the potential to excel internationally. — Bernama

Real Madrid opposes LaLiga Miami match, urges UEFA and FIFA to block plan

MADRID: Real Madrid on Tuesday denounced plans to stage a LaLiga match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, warning the proposal could undermine football's competitive balance and vowing to petition global governing bodies to block the move. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday approved the December 20 fixture at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which could become the first LaLiga match held abroad and the first European league fixture staged in the United States. "Real Madrid wish to express to its members, supporters and football fans in general its firm rejection of the proposal," the club said in a statement, revealing they have already urged FIFA, UEFA and Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) to intervene. The club accused the RFEF of making its decision "without informing or consulting the clubs participating in the competition" and argued that staging the match in Miami "violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity" in home-and-away league formats. Real further stated that the move would "alter the competitive balance" and grant "an unfair sporting advantage" to the clubs involved. The club also warned that approving the proposal could compromise sporting integrity and "set an unacceptable precedent," insisting any change of this nature should require "the express and unanimous agreement of all the clubs participating in the competition." The plan still requires approval from UEFA, US Soccer, CONCACAF and ultimately FIFA before LaLiga President Javier Tebas can realise his long-held ambition of taking Spanish football to the US --REUTERS
