New photos show Erin Patterson's killer Beef Wellington as four major deceptions explained

New photographs have been released of the poisonous mushroom-laced Beef Wellington used by Erin Patterson to murder three elderly relatives of her estranged husband.
After a week of deliberation, the jury found Patterson, 50, lured her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, to lunch at her home and poisoned them.
The mother-of-two, from Leongatha, a small town southeast of Melbourne, Australia, fed them individual servings of Beef Wellington that contained death cap mushrooms.
Jurors at the trial in Morwell, Victoria, also found Patterson guilty of attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather's husband and a Baptist church pastor, who survived the meal in the summer of 2023.
During the trial, Wilkinson told jurors that Patterson had served her own separate meal on a different coloured plate.
Her estranged husband had also been invited to the meal, but turned down the invitation the day before, according to messages shown to the court.
Prosecutors told jurors that Patterson had employed four major deceptions in order to murder her guests.
She first fabricated a cancer diagnosis to lure the guests to the lunch, then poisoned their meals while serving herself an untainted portion, the prosecution's leading barrister Nanette Rogers told the court.
Patterson then lied that she was also sick from the food to avoid suspicion, before finally embarking on a cover-up when police began investigating the deaths, attempting to destroy evidence and lying to investigating officers, the prosecution said.
Patterson, who said during the trial she had inherited large sums of money from her mother and grandmother, was the only witness in her defence, spending eight days on the stand, including five days of cross-examination.
Patterson told the court about a life-long struggle with her weight, an eating disorder and low self-esteem, frequently becoming emotional as she spoke about the impact of the lunch on the Patterson family and her two children.
She told the court she had lied about having cancer to her guests because she was embarrassed to admit she was actually having weight loss surgery.
The defendant said she wanted her relatives' advice on how to tell her children about the surgery. She told the court she had also not become as ill as her guests because she secretly binged on a cake that her mother-in-law had brought to the lunch and then made herself sick.
Patterson had pleaded not guilty to the four charges, claiming the deaths were accidental. She will be sentenced at a later date and could spend the rest of her life in prison.

Wilmington man charged with death of his father makes first court appearance

A man charged in connection with the death of his father appeared in New Hanover County District Court on Monday, July 7. Camden White, 19, of Wilmington, appeared in court on Monday afternoon. His bond was set at $500,000. Upon posting bond, he will be placed on house arrest and subjected to frequent drug screenings. White has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his father, Michael White. The victim died from an apparent gunshot wound on July 5, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department. Camden White was arrested on July 3 in connection with charges of attempted common law robbery and impeding traffic on May 24, according to court records. White was also charged with injury to personal property in connection with an incident on May 28. He was released on July 3 after posting a $10,000 bond related to the prior arrest, according to court records. A district attorney requested that White not be granted a bond. The attorney said that White exhibited a pattern of dangerous behavior, noting the theft charges stemming from an incident where numerous businesses and vehicles were broken into. The district attorney said that White was hallucinating under impairing substances at the time of the incident. The attorney said that he is believed to have been under the influence of the same substances at the time of the alleged shooting death. White's defending attorney said that he was under the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD, at the time of both incidents. The defending attorney said that the LSD was provided by the defendant's father. White was hospitalized for 12-18 hours following the theft incident, his attorney said. Several family members, including White's mother, attended the appearance in support. The family was not available for comment following the hearing. White is scheduled to appear in court on July 24. The Wilmington Police Department responded to the 200 block of Colonial Drive following reports of gunshots inside a nearby residence around 12:30 a.m. on July 5, according to an earlier news release. Officers cleared the home and located Michael White upstairs, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, the release stated. Officers located the suspect and detained him. Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video)

On Sunday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark while surfing Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia. The boy was bitten on his right side – leg and arm – and was flown to the hospital in critical condition due to his injuries. Fellow surfers and beachgoers can be seen in footage helping the young man, carrying him up the beach, and tying a tourniquet to quell the bleeding before emergency crews arrived. "I'm not sure whether he was with any other friends at the time of the incident, but by the time our lifeguards got there he had already had a tourniquet applied to those impacted limbs," NSW Surf Lifesaving CEO Stephen Pearce told the ABC. It's unclear what kind of shark was involved in the attack; however, some have suspected a great white. Following the attack, jet skis were used to clear the water. And a helicopter was used to survey the water, searching for the shark, but they didn't find anything. This time of year, according to Pearce, whales are migrating up and down the coast, and that can lead to increased shark activity. And even after the attack, when the victim and the fellow surfers were fleeing the water, footage shows the shark coming close into shallow water, perhaps even chasing them for another bite. See the footage of that above. Local surf report Instagram account, Nicka35, wrote: 'Unbelievable footage shows the 2 metre plus shark chasing the victim and his rescuers all the way to the shoreline today at Cabarita Headland. Huge effort but the guys to not only save this kid but put their own lives on the line in the process.'However, attacks like are still relatively rare in this region. Pearce added: "Cabarita Beach is a beautiful, picturesque beach and unfortunately I think it might be a case of 'wrong time, wrong place' at this stage for the young fella.'Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video) first appeared on Surfer on Jun 29, 2025

Man sentenced to decades in prison in the shooting death of Mary Halcomb in Peoria

A man pleaded guilty on Monday, July 7 to first-degree murder in the death of a Mapleton woman. Nathaniel N. Archuleta, now 19, was arrested in September 2024 in the shooting death of Mary Halcomb, 20, at a home in the 1400 block of South Griswold Street in Peoria. He had been set to go to trial on July 28, but he pleaded guilty during a hearing Monday and was sentenced to 45 years in prison. More: A 'heart the size of Texas': Family grieves young woman who was fatally shot in Peoria On Sept. 6, 2024, Peoria police responded to the home to find Halcomb lying in a pool of blood on the landing of a stairwell at the front of the home with a gun in her hand and a gunshot wound to her neck. According to the Peoria County State's Attorney's Office, Archuleta tried to stage Halcomb's death to make it appear as if she had died by suicide. She was pronounced dead at the scene, with officers discovering that Archuleta's story did not match up with the evidence. A blood trail was discovered leading from a downstairs bedroom to the stairwell where her body was found, suggesting that her body had been moved. In the downstairs bedroom was a post-it note that read, 'I, Mary Elyce Halcomb, promise to never break Nathanial Archuleta's heart, and if I do, Nathaniel Archuleta has every right to euthanize me, vice versa, I love you,' according to the State's Attorney's Office. When questioned by police, Archuleta gave conflicting accounts of what happened the night of Mary's death, initially claiming it was a suicide, then saying that he was trying to clean his gun, and it accidentally went off. However, while he was in custody, the State's Attorney's Office said that he told a fellow inmate he shot her because she had been texting another man. The State's Attorney's Office said the plea hearing in front of Peoria County Circuit Judge Katherine Gorman was an emotional one for Halcomb's family members, who told of a steep emotional toll that her death had caused them. They said they had sleepless nights, nightmares and persistent heartbreak. "They described their overwhelming sense of loss, loss of sisterly moments, shared dreams, and life milestones that will never come," the State's Attorney's Office said in a press release. "Mary's loved ones described struggling with trust, fear, depression, and anxiety. They called Archuleta's actions selfish and unforgivable, stating that blood will forever be on his hands and that justice must now be served." Halcomb's family supported the plea deal, the State's Attorney's Office said, with Archuleta being required to serve 100% of his sentence. He had no prior criminal history.
