Youth told to join hands in efforts to eradicate child marriage

Deputy Director of the Women and Child Development Department Veeranagouda has said that child marriage is an age-old social evil practice and it should be eradicated from the route.
He was addressing an awareness programme on women's safety and empowerment, the POCSO Act and the Prevention of Child Marriages Act, which was held at the government degree college in Yadgir for girl students leading at colleges.
The programme was jointly held by the department, school education, and literacy department under the Mission Shakthi scheme.
Mr. Veeranagouda said that child marriages can be strictly prevented only after the general public, especially young generation boys and girls, join their hands with the department. 'Anybody can dial the helpline numbers 1098, 112 and 181 to prevent child marriages or to protect women. Not only the child marriages, but underage pregnancy also can be prevented by collective measures,' he added.
Nirmala, lecturer, said that the child marriages aren't prevented despite all possible awareness initiated over a decade. However, it can be prevented by continuous awareness programmes, she added.
Bisalappa Kattimani, Yallappa, Basalingmma and others also spoke.

The minor escaped and went to the local police. Police arrested the man and the minor girl's mother and charged them under POCSO Act , Prevention of Child Marriage Act, and other sections of the IPC. The duo were subsequently convicted by court which found them guilty of the charges. The Greater Chennai Police on Wednesday said strict action would be taken against those who misuse the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO)Act by filing false complaints. The police issued the warning after they found that a woman, in her complaint, had falsely accused her father-in-law of sexually abusing her child. An investigation revealed that her husband had instigated her to lodge the complaint owing to an ongoing quarrel he was having with his father. Police said that false complaints would be dealt with sternly under Section 22(1) of the POCSO Act. After obtaining necessary court orders, legal action was being pursued against the complainant, the police added.

A local court in Odisha's Jharsuguda district sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) for raping a blind girl, delivering the verdict within 100 days of the case's registration. The victim, a blind minor girl, visited the culprit's home frequently to listen to the television. He raped her on the afternoon of May 6 while the family slept. The accused, a 54-year-old, was arrested within two days on May 8. According to Jharsuguda police, advanced forensic techniques, including DNA analysis, were used to build an irrefutable case. 'The fast-tracked investigation and real-time trial monitoring ensured no delays, aligning with the new criminal laws' emphasis on timely justice,' it said. Chargesheet in 22 days The chargesheet was filed on May 28 within 22 days. The man was convicted Under Section 64(2)(k) BNS and Section 6 of the POCSO Act Besides, the court also awarded a compensation of ₹10,50,000 to the victim under the National Legal Services Authority's (NALSA) Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Oother Crimes – 2018. 'Justice delayed is justice denied. Our resolve is to ensure foolproof investigations to ensure that no criminal escapes the law. This conviction reinforces our pledge to protect the vulnerable and deliver justice without delay,' said Smit P Parmar, Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police. In an earlier case, Jharsuguda Police secured a conviction and 25 years rigorous imprisonment against a serial child rapist within 55 days. Jharsuguda police said they are committed to securing speedy justice in cases of crimes against women and children.
