Vinicius, Mbappe have to defend: Real Madrid's Alonso

PHILADELPHIA - New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso warned his team's stars including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe on Wednesday that they must all pitch in defensively.

"What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso told a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg.
"They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated.
"Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too."
Ancelotti said last season that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring.
The 26-year-old netted 43 goals across all competitions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after his move from Paris Saint-Germain.
Real Madrid face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, looking to seal top spot in their final Group H match, but will be without Mbappe.
The French superstar was not named as part of the squad to take on Salzburg as he continues his recovery from a stomach bug.
Mbappe missed the team's first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday.
"I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso.
"He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow."
In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he could depart the club this summer.
However Alonso said the Brazilian was still a valuable member of the team.
"He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso.
"He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament." - AFP

Pioli quits as coach of Saudi side Al Nassr
PARIS: Al Nassr have parted company with their Italian coach Stefano Pioli, the Saudi side announced on Wednesday. No official reason was given for the split after only nine months in the post but Pioli's name has been linked with joining Fiorentina for a second spell in charge of the Serie A side. Inter Milan, Monterrey join Dortmund in Club World Cup last 16
SEATTLE: Inter Milan kept their cool to beat nine-man River Plate 2-0 and reach the Club World Cup last 16 on Wednesday, while Mexican side Monterrey followed them through from Group E. Borussia Dortmund defeated Ulsan HD 1-0 to claim top spot in Group F and the Germans will face Sergio Ramos' Monterrey, who thrashed Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0. Argentine powerhouses River Plate were eliminated after their defeat by Inter, who will take on more South American opposition on Monday in Charlotte, in the shape of Fluminense. The Brazilian side could only draw 0-0 against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns but it was enough to claim second place behind Dortmund. Champions League runners-up Inter faced a battle in Seattle against an aggressive River Plate side who had Lucas Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel sent off in front of 45,000 fans at Lumen Field. Francesco Esposito scored his first Inter goal to put the Italians ahead and Alessandro Bastoni made the game safe late on for Christian Chivu's side. "In the first half we were surprised by their intensity, aggression and pressure," said Chivu. "Then in the second half we raised our level of intensity... we're strong, confident and have players who can play such a game." With Monterrey ahead against Urawa, River needed a winner to progress but their job got harder when Martinez was sent off after 66 minutes for hacking down veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Six minutes later teenage striker Esposito steered home the opener to leave River on the brink. Bastoni ensured Inter's progress as he drilled home, before River's Gonzalo Montiel picked up a second yellow and was dismissed. There were ugly scenes at the end as River fans threw objects at Inter players leaving the pitch. Both Argentine teams at the tournament, River and their rivals Boca Juniors, have been eliminated despite their fans creating vibrant atmospheres. New coach Chivu hails Inter's adaptability after River win
SEATTLE: Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu has praised the adaptability and commitment of his team after they beat River Plate 2-0 in an intense group match to reach the last 16 of the Club World Cup on Wednesday. Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored the goals in the last quarter of the game to book the 20-times Italian champions a date with Brazilian club Fluminense in Charlotte on Monday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: Chivu took charge of the squad for the first time at the Club World Cup, having replaced Simone Inzaghi on a two-year contract in early June. Inzaghi departed by mutual consent after a crushing 5-0 loss to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League final left Inter without a trophy for the first season since 2019-2020. River put Inter under heavy pressure at the start of Wednesday's game and Chivu was delighted at the character his players showed to come through such a test and get the job done. KEY QUOTES: Cristian Chivu: "The match was played with lots of character and willingness to win, to reach our goal, even though during the first half we were a bit surprised by their intensity, aggression and pressure ...
