Ukraine Says 'Massive' Russia Drone Attacks Hit Kyiv, Odesa
Last Updated: Russia launched drone attacks on Kyiv and Odesa, killing one and hitting a maternity hospital. Ukraine calls for more sanctions and support. Russia carried out 'massive" drone attacks on Ukraine's capital Kyiv and port city of Odesa early Tuesday, killing one person and hitting a maternity hospital, Ukrainian officials said, calling for further sanctions. Moscow has kept up its attacks on Ukraine, which has hit back with strikes deep inside Russian territory, while peace talks held over the weekend failed to yield a breakthrough towards ending the three-year war. Aside from an agreement to exchange prisoners, progress has stalled and Russia has repeatedly rejected calls for an unconditional ceasefire. 'Russia lies every day about its desire for peace and attacks people every day. Time to impose sanctions. Time to support Ukraine with weapons. Time to prove that democracy has power," Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, said on Telegram. A 59-year-old man was killed in the Russian strikes on residential buildings in Odesa on Tuesday, and at least four others were wounded, said Governor Oleg Kiper. 'The enemy massively attacked Odesa with strike drones. There is damage to civilian infrastructure and fires," Kiper wrote on Telegram. 'The Russians hit a maternity hospital, an emergency medical ward and residential buildings," he said, adding the maternity hospital had been evacuated in time. In central Kiev, an AFP journalist heard at least 12 explosions, anti-aircraft fire and the buzzing of drones. 'Stay in shelters! The massive attack on the capital continues," Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram, adding in a separate post around 3:00 am (0000 GMT) that 'a new batch of UAVs (drones) is flying to the capital". Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine triggered the biggest European conflict since World War II, forcing millions to flee their homes and decimating much of eastern and southern Ukraine. Ukrainian cities are targeted by Russian air strikes almost daily. On Sunday, Russia launched a record 479 explosive drones at Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Despite efforts by US President Donald Trump to reach a ceasefire agreement, a second round of peace talks in Turkey are at a standstill. The only concrete agreement reached at the talks over the weekend was for release all seriously wounded or sick prisoners of war and those under the age of 25 — a deal that did not specify the number of soldiers involved. While welcoming POW exchanges, Zelensky said last week said it was 'pointless" to hold further talks with the current Russian delegation — who he previously dismissed as 'empty heads" — since they could not agree to a ceasefire. On Sunday, the Russian army also claimed to have attacked the Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, which borders the regions of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, already partially under Russian control, a first in more than three years of conflict. 'Time for everyone to finally accept the fact that Russia understands only strikes, not rational words," Ukraine's Yermak said on Tuesday, in a thinly veiled criticism of the Trump administration. As a condition for halting its invasion, Russia has demanded that Ukraine cede the territories Moscow claims to have annexed and forswear joining NATO. It has also rejected a proposed 30-day unconditional ceasefire sought by Kyiv and the European Union, arguing that it would allow Ukrainian forces to rearm with Western deliveries. Ukraine is demanding a complete Russian withdrawal of from its territory and security guarantees from the West, describing Moscow's demands as 'ultimatums". In the early hours of Tuesday, medical teams responded to emergencies in four Kyiv districts, including the historic Podil area, as reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko via Telegram. Meanwhile, in the Odesa drone attack, a 59-year-old man was killed and injured four others, Governer Oleg Kiper said on Telegram, as per BBC. Military officials indicated that attacks were continuing and advised residents to take shelter. The comprehensive impact of the assault remained unclear initially. "Enemy drones are simultaneously attacking several districts of the city," stated Timur Tkachenko, Kyiv's military administration chief, via Telegram. "There is damage to residential buildings and fires. Rescuers are working at the sites." In Odesa's southern port, a substantial drone attack struck an emergency medical facility, a maternity ward, and residential structures, according to Oleh Kiper, the regional governor, posting on Telegram. Kiper confirmed no casualties at the maternity hospital, with successful evacuation of patients and staff. He shared images showing damaged windows of what appeared to be a medical facility and structural damage to several buildings. Both parties in the conflict, ongoing for over three years, maintain they avoid civilian targets. However, the conflict has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, predominantly Ukrainian.

India responds to China's rare earth export curbs: Goyal calls it a ‘wake-up call' for world
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has described China's new rare earth export restrictions as a global 'wake-up call,' underlining the need for countries to diversify critical supply chains. Speaking during an official visit to Switzerland on Monday, Goyal highlighted India's efforts to position itself as a dependable partner for international businesses seeking alternatives to Chinese suppliers, reports ANI. China's export restrictions, effective from April 4, mandate special licenses for the export of seven rare earth elements and related magnetic products. With China controlling over 90per cent of global magnet production, the move has raised significant concerns among industries dependent on these materials. Short-Term Challenges for Indian Industry Goyal acknowledged that the new rules would create immediate hurdles for India's automotive and white goods sectors. 'There are clearly issues around the suspension of permanent magnet supplies from China to India, which will particularly affect our auto sector and several white goods manufacturers,' he said. Automotive companies in India have sought the government's assistance to expedite approval processes for importing rare earth magnets, which are vital components in electric vehicles and other technologies. India's Strategy: Diplomatic and Domestic Measures The minister outlined a multi-pronged strategy to mitigate the impact of the export curbs. The Indian embassy in China is actively engaging with authorities to facilitate existing applications, while the commerce ministry is working to identify and secure alternative supply sources globally. Additionally, the government is ramping up efforts to enhance domestic capabilities by strengthening Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). 'We are providing all necessary resources to accelerate our own rare earth production,' Goyal stated. Industry Shifting Away from Subsidy Dependence Goyal noted a growing maturity within Indian industry, pointing out that many companies are now proactively collaborating with domestic startups and innovators instead of relying solely on government support. 'They are becoming bigger and bolder in their approach,' he remarked, adding that firms are even willing to fund early-stage innovations and support pricing transitions. Encouraging conversations with automotive manufacturers indicate confidence in the ability to address these supply chain disruptions collaboratively, Goyal added. Technological Innovation and Trusted Partnerships India is also banking on technological breakthroughs to reduce its reliance on Chinese rare earths. The minister referenced ongoing research and development initiatives that aim to provide alternative solutions. 'There are some technologies that India is developing,' he said, emphasising that the collaborative ecosystem—comprising government, industry, and innovators—is working cohesively. Turning Crisis Into Opportunity Despite the challenges, Goyal struck an optimistic tone, calling the disruption a strategic opportunity to strengthen India's manufacturing base and global relevance. 'More and more companies and people in India will recognise that it is important to be self-reliant and to have trusted partners in supply chains,' he said. With growing international recognition of India as a reliable supply chain partner, Goyal believes the crisis could catalyse a shift toward greater resilience and global integration for Indian industry. 'We are all working as a team,' he concluded, 'and we remain confident that we will emerge as winners in the medium to long term.' (Source- ANI)
