Lightning strikes kill 33 people in eastern India
The Bihar government announced compensation of 4 million rupees to the families of those killed by lightning.
PATNA, India – Lightning strikes during monsoon storms in eastern India this week killed at least 33 people and injured dozens, officials said on July 18 .
The deaths in Bihar occurred during fierce storms between July 16 and 17 , a state disaster management department statement said, with the victims mostly farmers and labourers working in the open.
More heavy rain and lightning are forecast for parts of the state.
Bihar state's disaster management minister, Mr Vijay Kumar Mandal, told AFP that officials in vulnerable districts had been directed to 'create awareness to take precautionary steps following an alert on lightning'.
The state government announced compensation of 4 million rupees (S$59,630) to the families of those killed by lightning.
At least 243 died by lightning in 2024 and 275 in 2023 , according to the state government.
India's eastern region, including Bihar, is prone to annual floods that kill dozens and displace hundreds of thousands of people during peak monsoon season. AFP

Bangkok - Thailand's army accused Cambodia of violating the countries' hours-old truce agreement on July 29, saying clashes continued despite a deal to pause combat along their jungle frontier. Following peace talks in Malaysia on July 28, both sides agreed an unconditional ceasefire would start at midnight to end fighting over a smattering of ancient temples in disputed zones along their 800km border. 'At the time the agreement took effect, the Thai side detected that Cambodian forces had launched armed attacks into several areas within Thai territory,' said Thai army spokesman Winthai Suwaree. 'This constitutes a deliberate violation of the agreement and a clear attempt to undermine mutual trust, he added in a statement. 'Thailand is compelled to respond appropriately, exercising its legitimate right to self-defence.' Jets, rockets and artillery have killed at least 38 people since July 24 and displaced nearly 300,000 more – prompting intervention from US President Donald Trump over the weekend. Good faith A joint statement from both countries – as well as Malaysia which hosted the peace talks – said the ceasefire was 'a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security'. A spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on July 28 evening that 'he urges both countries to respect the agreement fully and to create an environment conducive to addressing long-standing issues and achieving lasting peace'. Police did not immediately make details of the shooting public, but a law enforcement source told Reuters at least one New York Police Department officer and two civilians were struck by gunfire and that the suspect was believed to be dead. The source said the information was preliminary, and the condition or extent of injuries sustained by the police officer and two others was not immediately known. The New York Post newspaper, citing unnamed police sources, reported that a gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle had opened fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper, wounding a police officer and a bystander. The Post reported they were in critical condition. The gunman, the Post reported, had barricaded himself inside the office tower, possibly on the 32nd floor of the building.
