‘Scammers posed as Qatar Airways customer service to try and plunder my savings'

Independent09-04-2025

Karen Welsh, a health executive from Lancashire, needed to fly to Brisbane, Australia, to visit an unwell family member. But scammers who contacted her through social media almost succeeded in stealing her savings and wrecking her trip.
Ms Welsh found suitable flights from Manchester via Doha to the Queensland capital on Qatar Airways. As an NHS worker, she is entitled to a discount. But, she says: 'Once I clicked 'pay now' the website just whirled and wouldn't progress to asking for payment details.'
She contacted Qatar Airways support via direct message on X (formerly Twitter), to no avail.
'I spent six days going back and forth with no real help or outcome.'
Ms Welsh then posted a public message on X asking for support.
'I then received a direct message from an account called ASK Service Team with the same logo as Qatar. I was told that they had escalated the matter to their WhatsApp customer relations team and I was going to receive a message from them.'
She then received a call from a WhatsApp number in Kenya that called itself 'Call Centre, Customer Support'.
At this point the scam began. 'The gentleman said that he had been given a brief summary of my concerns and that to help me book flights, I needed to download the WorldRemit payment app, as Qatar was having issues with their payment platform,' Ms Welsh says.
'At this point, I was a little suspicious – as I always am – but Googled WorldRemit and found it was a legitimate secure payment platform. I went onto the app and added my email address.
'The man on the phone gave me a password and told me not to create an account, but to put my email into the log-on link. He then asked me to input the password he gave me and then to send the authorisation link that I would get to my phone, to him.
"It was at this point I stopped and realised I should never be asked to do that. I asked the man to send me an email to confirm this is what I should do, from the official Qatar email address. He obviously never did.'
The scam involves the villains taking control of the WorldRemit account, which is tied to a UK account, and emptying it of cash.
Ms Welsh now says: 'Honestly, I am shocked that I went as far as I did, but I can fully understand how people keep going – if you are frustrated with the lack of service from an airline, you are naturally happy and cooperative when someone seems to be taking an interest.
'When I look back through everything, I notice things like the Service Team Twitter message came from an account with one follower.'
Ms Welsh wants her experience to be shared, in the hope of preventing others falling victim to the scam.
'I was so close to being scammed out of money, which means I would have been unable to visit my uncle, who's seriously unwell. He's 87, and it's likely to be my last time that I'm going to visit him.
'If they had scammed me for money, I possibly wouldn't have been able to go on that trip, which would have been devastating for me, but also devastating for my auntie and uncle over there.
'Not only would they have stolen money from me, they'll have stolen the ability for me to see my uncle again for potentially the last time.
'You can never get something like that, that back, can you?'
Ms Welsh has now booked with Emirates for the trip to Brisbane.
With her WhatsApp number now known to the criminal world, she is now being called several times each day by other scammers based in Egypt and Pakistan.

Huge EastEnders twist as another major couple get engaged

This article contains spoilers for tomorrow's episode of EastEnders, which airs Friday at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Wedding bells are set to ring out across Albert Square once again, as a beloved couple decided to tie the knot. I am, of course, referring to Patrick and Yolande Trueman (Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter), who recently won the British Soap Award for Best On-Screen Partnership. What a way to cap off the celebrations! Throughout this week's episodes of the soap, we've seen the couple struggle with intimacy in the wake of a horrific incident. Some of the serial's most harrowing scenes ever aired last year, when church-leader Pastor Clayton (Howard Saddler) sexually assaulted Yolande in a store room at the community centre. She bravely spoke up about her ordeal to friend Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe), and then found the courage to report his crime to the police. Unfortunately, due to a lack of evidence, there was little that they could do. However, soon after, a second survivor of his abuse came forward, with the CPS charging him with two counts of sexual assault. Their bravery was noted by a third woman, who also came forward, prompting Clayton to barge his way into Yolande's house in an attempt to get her to drop the charges. Later that night, the police arrived and she assumed he'd spread more vicious lies about her. They were actually there to reveal that Clayton had taken his own life. Since then, Yolande has tried to rebuild her life and reconnect with her Christian faith – something which she abandoned following the sexual assault. Earlier this week, Yolande went to run herself a bath and asked her life partner to give her a massage afterwards. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Things turned frosty when he refused to touch her, later admitting that he didn't want her to draw any comparisons to her abuser. More Trending She was furious that he'd taken it upon himself to decide to eradicate their sex life based upon something that happened to her , and they seemed to reach the end of the road. However, after some words of wisdom from Denise Fox (Diane Parish), the pair reconciled. Welsh Government issues new order to deal with problem plaguing Eryri beauty spot

Welsh Government has taken action over a problem caused by visitors to an Eryri beauty spot. Llyn Ogwen is one of the honeypot sites of North Wales - a key starting point for some of the finest walks and scrambles in Eryri National Park. But this creates problems in the area due to the sheer number of visitors arriving by car and the limited parking options due to the topography of the area. This has seen people parking at the roadside - often on both sides of the A5 near the lake - causing issues for passing traffic and pedestrians. Two years ago a road order was introduced. The Prohibition of Waiting Order banned parking on the roadside - with yellow lines added on both sides of the road around parts of the A5 at Llyn Ogwen. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox There have also been major efforts to get more people utilising park and ride services using the Sherpa buses. But the problem has continued and the parking ban is now set to be extended to a wider area as the government says 'dangerous and inconsiderate parking has become an increasing concern'. A new order is being introduced after consultation with North Wales Police. This will see the parking ban extended further along the A5 in the direction of Capel Curig. The Government said: "The proposed Order is required to prevent indiscriminate parking on a length of the A5 trunk road at Llyn Ogwen, Conwy County Borough. "The main purpose of the Order is to modify the extents of the current parking restrictions at this location. "Dangerous and inconsiderate parking has become an increasing concern at this location. It is obstructing the movement of vehicles along the trunk road and is also forcing pedestrians onto the live carriageway in certain places. "Making this Order will further address these issues and provide a safer route for vehicles and pedestrians. The current parking restrictions are imposed by virtue of the A5 Trunk Road (Llyn Ogwen, Conwy County Borough) (Prohibition of Waiting) Order 2023 (S.I.2023/337 (W. 48)). "That Order will be revoked by the proposed Order."

The teams travelled through seven checkpoints before reaching the final one, without phones, flights or bank cards and only a tight budget of £1,140 per person, a map, public transport and each other to depend on. Welsh couple Fin and Sioned had seen their fair share of challenges along the way, including homesickness and catching up with the other teams when they were hours behind. In an Instagram post following the final episode, which was aired on Wednesday evening (June 11), Sioned shared her thoughts on the journey she had embarked on in the programme. Article continues below Content cannot be displayed without consent With a collection of photos from their travels, she wrote: "From the moment we set off, Fin and I had no idea just how much this race would challenge us, change us and bring us closer together. "We've crossed countries, faced setbacks, ran for buses (too many times), and soaked in moments I'll never forget. "From the laughs to the tears, every mile has meant something. "This was THE most amazing opportunity I've ever had and to be honest I don't think I can ever top it! "We've literally been able to see parts of the world I never dreamed I'd visit! What a wild, emotional, unforgettable ride. "We've experienced so many new things and we met so many amazing people of different cultures and backgrounds. "It was such a valuable experience and I cannot express how grateful I actually am to have been able to be a part of it!" She continued: "But what really stayed with me were the strangers who became lifelines, the people who helped us without hesitation, offered directions, a meal, or just any information when we needed it most. "I've made some lifelong friends in the team and cast, as well as learned so much more about myself and what I can accomplish. "On top of that I now know that any ups and downs me and Fin will face we can obviously overcome it because we completed Race Across the World together successfully (with a few bickers)!!" She concluded with: "I cannot recommend travelling this way more to anyone! Someone had left a supportive sign for Sioned and Fin ahead of the final episode of Race Across the World (Image: Sioned Cray / Instagram ) "I get that not everyone will be lucky enough to have this opportunity but if this journey has taught us anything it's that you can seriously do anything as long as you put your mind to it. "Super excited to see what our next journey will hold for us. Thank you to all the team at Studio Lambert and Race Across the World for believing in us and allowing to be authentically ourselves. ‌ "Thank you to you guys for all the support and I hope you stick around to see what more we'll get up to...". On her Instagram story, the star shared a photo from her home village of Nantgaredig in Carmarthenshire, in which someone had left a sign with a red dragon and the globe with the words 'Big up Sioned + Fin #RATW'. In response, Sioned captioned the photo with: "I love my small village in Wales!'. Article continues below
