Police seize £30,000 illegal vapes from shop
More than £30,000 worth of suspected counterfeit and unfit-for-sale vapes and cigarettes have been seized from a shop in Rotherham.
Police and and council trading standards officers conducted an operation at a store in Swallownest on 13 February.
Intelligence from residents and local businesses, including reports of anti-social behaviour reportedly caused by the shop, resulted in the joint operation, South Yorkshire Police said.
During the inspection, more than £28,000 worth of counterfeit vapes, vape liquids and cartridges, and more than 150 packs of illegal cigarettes, worth about £1,400, were found in the shop.
Insp Darren Birley, of Rotherham South Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Not only do these vapes undercut legitimate businesses, but they also pose a serious risk to people's health.
"It isn't uncommon for these counterfeit products to find their way into the hands of children."
Sam Barstow, Rotherham Council's assistant director of community safety and street scene, said: "Joint operations of this nature to tackle illegal tobacco and vape products have resulted in over £639,000 worth of illicit items being removed from sale."

University student jailed for raping child
A university student has been jailed for 14 years after admitting repeatedly raping a child. David Thorne, 22, pleaded guilty to eight sexual offences, including five rape charges involving a child aged under 13. Lincoln Crown Court heard that Thorne, who is studying policing, travelled to Grantham in Lincolnshire to meet the girl. Thorne had claimed the girl told him she was 17, but his evidence was dismissed by the court at a Newton Hearing – which seeks to determine the truth when two sides give conflicting evidence. Giving evidence, the girl insisted she told Thorne her real age and said it was Thorne who claimed to be 17. All the offences took place over three days in December 2023. The court was told Thorne, an Army cadet leader, wore his uniform during one of his visits to see the girl. Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hirst said he had "no hesitation" in accepting the victim's account of events. In a victim impact statement read out in court, the girl said: "The crime made me angry and upset. "I feel very sad, especially when I'm on my own." Thorne, of New Crescent in Cherry Willingham, was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will have to serve an extended period of 12 months on licence when he is released from custody. A restraining order will also prevent Thorne having further contact with his victim. Det Con Victoria Oakes praised the girl for her bravery and courage. "Thorne's actions are reprehensible and completely unacceptable in our society. His victim was clearly underage, and he knew that," she said. "Instead, he chose to plead ignorance and I am glad that the judge dismissed his claims." 'We want justice', say stab victim's family
The family of a "much loved" man found stabbed in a Hull street have said they want justice four years after his killing. Corey Dobbe, 23, died following the attack on Harleston Close on 13 June 2021 but his killer has never been found. In a statement to mark the anniversary, Mr Dobbe's family said they would "never get over the heartbreak of losing him". "We just want justice for Corey, our pain and distress will continue every day until those responsible face justice," they added. Detectives have made a renewed appeal for information, adding that finding Moise Djuku, wanted in connection with the killing, continues to be their focus. To date, there have been no arrests. Det Ch Insp Alan Curtis, from Humberside Police, said: "Moise Djuku is out there somewhere, I would ask again for anyone who knows where he is, to come forward and give us that vital information. "I want to help Corey's grieving family get justice for his senseless killing. Corey Dobbe and his family deserve justice. They deserve their day in court and to bring his killer to justice." An inquest in July 2023 heard Mr Dobbe had suffered 17 wounds to his back, chest, spine and arms when he was attacked near the Holderness Drain. He died as a result of three fatal stab wounds to the chest and, despite the efforts of paramedics, was pronounced dead at the scene. A £10,000 reward continues to be offered by Crimestoppers for information to help locate Mr Djuku. Man who murdered uncle and hid body in bank jailed
A drug dealer who kidnapped and murdered his uncle before hiding his body in a bank vault has been jailed for more than 34 years. Asghar Badshah, a 39-year-old bus driver from Bradford, was taken to a disused bank on Commercial Street in Batley by his nephew, Tahir Syed, on 30 November 2019 over a missing sum of money, Leeds Crown Court heard. Mr Badshah was beaten to death and his body was found behind a false wall in a vault four weeks later. Syed, 42, of no fixed address, was found guilty of murder, conspiracy to kidnap and drugs conspiracy offences on Monday and sentenced at the same court earlier. Syed and his associates had imported tonnes of cocaine and heroin to the UK in more than 30 shipments between 2016 to 2021, the court heard. Judge Thomas Bayliss KC said Mr Badshah had been asked to "hide a large amount of cash" by Syed, who then suspected Mr Badshah of stealing £600,000 from him. The court was told how Mr Badshah was kidnapped from his mother's address in Mayo Road, Bradford, in a Mercedes at around 01:35 GMT on the day of the murder and taken to the bank, where he was beaten with a metal rod. Syed lied to his family, the court heard, telling them that his uncle was still alive, knowing that in reality his naked body had been stored in an old vault in the disused bank. Judge Bayliss said: "I am quite sure that your primary purpose, was to detain and interrogate Asghar Badshah, in order to ascertain where the missing money was." Syed was jailed for a minimum term of 34 years and 153 days, taking into account almost four years already spent behind bars since being extradited from Turkey.
