Harry Styles spotted in St Peter's Square for announcement of new pope
Harry Styles has been snapped on a rather baffling side quest, as fans spotted him in Rome for the new Pope's announcement.
On May 8, the papal conclave in the Vatican chose the new Pope, and white smoke began billowing out of the Sistine Chapel.
A bell marked the election of Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
For some reason, the former One Direction singer was among the visitors in Rome who gathered at St Peter's Square, the iconic square in the Vatican City, directly in front of St Peter' Basilica.
The singer, 31, was dressed down in a blue jacket, grey cap and a pair of square black sunglasses.
The look did little to disguise who he was as fans immediately recognised the star and took to social media to share their confusion as to why the star wanted to be at the announcement.
harry styles is so random, one day he's at the grammys winning album of the year, then he's running a marathon in japan, but he could also be in rome waiting for the announcement of the new pope, i love being his fan pic.twitter.com/fIRlOfvuFJ — anna bea (@axlsugar) May 8, 2025
'Harry Styles is so random, one day he's at the grammys winning album of the year, then he's running a marathon in japan, but he could also be in rome waiting for the announcement of the new pope, i love being his fan,' said axlsugar.
'Of course Harry Styles was in Rome waiting for the new Pope to be announced. Where else would he be,' said moondancerry.
Fans also spotted that the Watermelon Sugar singer's cap read: 'techno is my boyfriend,' which many found hilarious.
'Mind you harry styles was in Rome watching the new pope being announced wearing a cap that says 'techno is my boyfriend',' said SYSCAbout on X.
'watching the new pope with a 'techno is my friend' hat. you're actually funniest most fascinating person ever, @harrystyles,' said judgyville.
In March, Harry was seen out and about with close friend James Corden in London, and the same blue jacket he was snapped wearing in Rome. More Trending
Harry was still sporting the bushy moustache, which he debuted earlier in March as he ran a speedy marathon in Tokyo.
Since the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne in October of last year, the What Makes You Beautiful singer has been fairly reclusive.
Harry is not the only celebrity in Rome at the moment; Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner were snapped making their red carpet debut in Rome this week at the 70th David Di Donatello Awards.
The Italian Open has also brought a number of tennis stars and celebrity spectators who are in Rome enjoying the sport.

Lorraine Kelly takes savage swipe at Love Island cast's appearances
Lorraine Kelly had no problems sharing what she thought about the new Love Island cast on her ITV show this morning, as the host spoke about the dangers of social media filters Lorraine Kelly has shared her thoughts on the new Love Island cast - and she's not holding back. On Thursday mornings episode of her ITV show, Lorraine, the host discussed the dangers of social media filters. Joined by Emily Clarkson and journalist Lucie Cave, the trio discussed Emily's viral social media video, in which she discussed how easy it was to manipulate the internet by adding filters to pictures and videos. The 30-year-old daughter of Jeremy Clarkson spoke about how "catastrophic it was that young girls sit at home and compare themselves to people who had heavily edited themselves. The conversation then moved on to ITV2 show Love Island. Despite admitting she didn't watch the show, Lorraine couldn't escape from seeing clips online. Speaking about the cast - the 65-year-old host had no problem airing her true feelings, as she said: "Programmes like Love Island... to me, they all look exactly the blinking same. "Why do you all want to look the same? Why do you want to have that same sort of look about you?" Lorraine questioned. "Children, I mean they're in their 20s, and they're having work done. It's heartbreaking," she continued. "It's crazy," as Lucie spoke about the Love Island effect, referring to the increased demand for cosmetic procedures, particularly among young people. The Love Island contestants haven't even been in the villa a week, but there's been plenty of drama. During Tuesday's episode, fans were left fuming when Sophie Lee was brutally dumped from the villa after just two days. Despite not initially being at risk of an early exit, the motivational speaker and author was abruptly booted out of the villa after her man Harry was chosen by newly single Shakira. Shakira had just 24 hours to woo another man, after her partner Ben was stolen by American bombshell Toni. Blu, Conor and Harry all chose to opt for Shakira, knowing full well she'd only be able to pick one of them. Shakira ended up picking 30-year-old Harry, meaning Sophie was newly single and dumped from the villa, leaving fans fuming. However, Sophie on the other hand had no hard feelings as she wished the Islanders the best. Sophie said: "I gave it everything I could. I'm very grateful for the experience it's taught me so much about who I am, how I communicate and what I am looking for. I wish Harry all the best, he genuinely deserves a girl who makes him happy."

Netflix has released a first look at Building the Band, a new music competition series featuring the late Liam Payne as a guest judge. A first-look clip released on Wednesday (11 June) does not show Payne, but Netflix confirmed he appears in the series alongside fellow guest judge Kelly Rowland. Netflix said in a statement the former One Direction star's family reviewed the series and is 'supportive of his inclusion'. The show was one of Payne's final projects.

Liam Payne's Netflix show sees One Direction star living his dream for last time
Netflix have released a first look trailer and release date for new music competition show Building The Band - starring former One Direction star Liam Payne as a guest judge A first look trailer and release date for Netflix's new show Building The Band, featuring Liam Payne as a guest judge has been revealed. The show, which was filmed months before the star's tragic death, will feature a Love Is Blind format in which singers will audition for each other and choose their own bandmates before even seeing them. The talent show will see the late Liam Payne in the judging panel alongside Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland and a number of guest judges along the way. The trio filmed the show alongside host, Backstreet Boys star AJ McClean, in summer 2024, just months before the One Direction stars untimely death. Netflix had previously delayed the release of the show as the producers and family were weighing Payne's inclusion in the series. The show has now given a release date of July 9, as the team and Liam's family decided to move forward with Liam remaining in the series. The show is set to run over three weeks with two episodes releasing weekly on July 9, July 16 and July 23. 'Liam Payne's family reviewed the series and is supportive of his inclusion,' Netflix said in a statement. Now, the streamer have released a first look trailer for the new show. Netflix fans may recognise the set up, which looks similar to the Love Is Blind pods. During the trailer, fans can see hopeful bandmembers enter the pods, with contestant Donzell taking centre stage. Fellow contestants are blown away by his voice, as they listen in to build their very own band based on musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and raw talent. The trailer does not show Liam, or any of the judges, or directly mention his involvement in the show. His involvement was announced before his tragic death, with the star taking part in filming in August 2024 in Manchester, England. Liam Payne died in October 2024 at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Following Liam's tragic death, his former One Direction bandmates released a joint statement which read: "We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing. "In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. "For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."
