Liam Payne leaves Building The Band viewers sobbing as he belts out One Direction hit before charging into Netflix audience to dance with fans in bittersweet moment

Liam Payne left Building The Band viewers sobbing as he belted out a One Direction hit before charging into the Netflix audience to dance with fans in a bittersweet moment from the show. The singer, who passed away on October 16 2024, appeared as a guest judge in the series alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland - which concluded on Wendesday (23 July 2025). Liam filmed the show, which premiered on July 9, just months before his death - and followed 'gifted singers vieing for a chance to form the next great music group sight unseen, leaving looks out of the equation.' Now, a touching moment of the popstar singing along to One Direction's 2011 song What Makes You Beautiful has left fans very emotional. The start of the tune plays out to the audience and Liam instantly has a smile on his face as he taps his hand along to the beat. As the song gets to the chorus, Liam stands up and busts some moves on stage and the crowd go wild. They can't believe they eyes as he moves down to the live audience and sings along with them. Meanwhile Nicole and Kelly are bopping along to the beat in their chairs and clapping their hands. As he sits back down, co-star Nicole tells him: 'Let's go Liam! That was awesome.' With a grin on his face, Liam says: 'That was so fun.' Many rushed to the comments section on YouTube to share their love for the popstar. 'I was smiling from ear to ear. We miss you Liam.' 'We lost a true angel! It still doesn't feel real and probably never will! Rest in peace angel.' 'Just by hearing this song brings back nostalgia and the memories of my One Direction era, it's so sad that we lost Liam Payne, he was so joyful who loved all of his fans dearly and was amazing too, RIP to our wonderful icon, you shall be missed.' Liam filmed the show, which premiered on July 9, just months before his death - and followed 'gifted singers vie for a chance to form the next great music group sight unseen, leaving looks out of the equation' 'This just shows how wonderful of a man he is.' 'This made my heart smile and cry all at the same time.' 'Aww Liam. I hope he knew how beautiful he was. He should still be here enjoying the life he built. Miss you xx.' It comes after Liam' sister Nicola has paid tribute to the late singer on Instagram after watching him in Netflix 's Building The Band. Last week Nicola heartbreakingly admitted 'I hate that this happened' and feels she will 'never be able to process his passing', nine months after his tragic death. In the tear-jerking post, Nicola wrote: '9 months ago today, our lives changed forever. I still find it incredibly hard to process what happened. I'm not sure I ever fully will, or even want to. 'Liam, you are the most incredible person. For those of us lucky enough to know and love you, our lives were truly blessed. 'Today, the world gets to see just a glimpse of your passion and talent and wow, you are amazing in this show. 'You cared so deeply about the people around you. You wanted to make a difference, and you are lighting up that stage like you were born to do. 'You were made to be a judge, to guide, to encourage, and to let your voice be heard. Watching you in this show, I've never been more proud. 'I just wish you got to see it. It's everything we knew it would be when we were at filming. 'This show will forever hold a special place in my heart because it's one of the last times I saw you, and I got to witness you shine so bloody brightly, but it's also allowed me to still feel close to you. 'I love you so much, and I miss you even more. I hate that this happened.' Nicola and Ruth are Liam's two older sisters, making him the youngest of three siblings in the tight-knit family. Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean hosts the programme, with Nicole as the main mentor and judge, being joined by Liam and Kelly Rowland throughout the process. And reflecting on her time working with the late singer, the Pussycat Dolls star Nicole admitted: 'We got pretty close through this whole experience.' She told People: 'Liam is such a kind and beautiful heart, and selfishly I'm glad that I got to spend my time with him. I'm really happy that the world gets to see another one of his gifts, which is helping these blossoming artists, these bands. 'He was amazing. I was really impressed with him. He was just so giving and generous, even when the cameras weren't rolling, spending time with all the fans and singing to them. It was lovely to watch him in his element.' The star said it was 'beautiful' to be able to see Liam 'come full circle' after coming third on the X Factor in 2010 with One Direction. She said: 'I saw the joy it brought to Liam. I felt that this was his happy place. Like myself, AJ and Kelly, we've lived this. We've learned it.' Nicole continued: 'To be able to bestow any inspiration and knowledge and wisdom and experience on any of these contestants and these bands, it brought us all joy. Particularly Liam. 'I felt this really inspired him and this was his happy place. This was his happy place because Liam was such a beautiful heart, and he loved to give back. He loved to help.'

Watch Liam Payne Belt Out One Direction With ‘Building the Band' Audience in Joyous New Clip: ‘That Was So Fun'

Nine months after Liam Payne died at age 31, his still-grieving fans can find a beacon of light in a new clip shared by Building the Band, the Netflix reality competition series the One Direction star filmed before his tragic death. In the clip, 'What Makes You Beautiful' — the 2011 breakthrough hit for the X Factor-formed boy band One Direction — plays in the studio while Payne films with the Breaking the Band judging panel in front of a live audience. Payne gives a sly smile and taps his fingers as the crowd passionately sings along to the upbeat smash before standing up out of his chair to rapturous applause and beginning to perform the song onstage. The best part: You can hear Payne clearly singing his baritone part in the song's five-part harmony, just like he did for all those years with One Direction. He weaves his way through the crowd, high-fiving everyone he passes, until he's back onstage for the big finale. 'Let's go, Liam!' cheers fellow judge Nicole Scherzinger, who — along with third judge Kelly Rowland — was clapping and singing along the whole time. When Payne returns to his chair, he looks ahead with a big smile and says, 'That was so fun.' It's a beyond-sweet moment that can offer a minor bit of comfort to Directioners that Payne definitely felt their love before his untimely death. The new clip begins with the message 'In loving memory of Liam Payne.' When the Netflix show premiered earlier this month, host AJ McLean of Backstreet Boys dedicated the series to Payne and his loved ones. 'When we came together to film Building the Band, we never imagined we'd soon be saying goodbye to our friend Liam Payne,' McLean says in the first episode. 'Liam is a guest judge in later episodes, and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice. It's through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.' Building the Band was one of the final projects Payne worked on before his death in October. About two months after wrapping filming in August, he suffered a fatal fall from the fourth-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires. High levels of alcohol and other substances were in his system at the time of his death, toxicology reports later confirmed. With the blessing of Payne's family, Netflix moved forward with streaming Building the Band, which separates hopeful singers into closed-off pods where they then seek to assemble a musical group before ever seeing one another. The third and final batch of episodes will be available to stream starting Wednesday. Simon Cowell searches for new boyband in Netflix docuseries

Simon Cowell is to search for the next big boyband in a new Netflix docuseries. The man behind the success of One Direction stars in Simon Cowell: The Next Act, which sees him hold open casting calls before releasing the debut single of a new music group. The 65-year-old announced he was launching a search for a new pop group in June 2024. He told the PA news agency at the time: "I would pray to find a band as good as One Direction and to find the records as good as they made. There are so many factors involved to make a band successful all over the world." Through Cowell's production company, Syco Entertainment, which is known for Britain's Got Talent, The X Factor, and The Greatest Dancer, the music mogul has helped to launch the careers of pop bands including One Direction, Little Mix, and Fifth Harmony. One Direction, comprising Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, were formed on The X Factor in 2010. The boyband had hits with songs including What Makes You Beautiful and Best Song Ever before going on an "extended hiatus" in 2016. In October 2024, Payne died at the age of 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentina. The new six-episode docuseries will stream on Netflix in December 2025. The search was documented by a TV crew from Box to Box Films, the company behind Formula 1: Drive to Survive. News of the show was announced alongside a slate of new unscripted Netflix series, including the reality shows Let's Marry Harry and Calabasas Confidential.
