Abu Dhabi, UAE – In a pioneering move towards sustainability and smarter mobility, Emirates Driving Company (EDC) has officially launched 'Green Drive', the UAE's first Eco-Friendly driving training initiative, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi-based climate-tech company CarbonSifr.
At Emirates Driving Company, our strategy is firmly built around sustainability as a core pillar of our operations and services. We are committed to adopting best practices that support the UAE's environmental goals. Reflecting this commitment, EDC has proudly achieved a AAA sustainability rating, the highest rating awarded by leading international agencies for exceptional performance in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.
In line with this achievement, we have launched pioneering initiatives that bring our sustainability vision to life. One of these is the 'Green Drive' initiative, a practical step towards promoting sustainable practices by offering the UAE's first carbon-neutral driving training experience. This reflects our vision to protect the environment and contribute to the nation's goal of achieving climate neutrality.
The initiative marks a significant step in EDC's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning with the nation's net-zero ambitions and broader sustainability agenda. Green Drive ensures that the carbon emissions generated during practical driving lessons are measured and fully removed through internationally certified carbon removal projects — at no additional cost to the student.
'As the leading provider of driver training in Abu Dhabi, we recognize our role in shaping not just safer roads, but a more sustainable future,' said Khaled Al Shemeili, CEO of Emirates Driving Company. 'Green Drive is more than an initiative — it's a statement that climate responsibility belongs in every part of life, including behind the wheel.'
Under the program, CarbonSifr uses internationally recognized carbon accounting methodologies to calculate the carbon footprint of each student's practical training sessions, taking into account fuel type, vehicle usage, and driving distance. These emissions are then removed through investments in globally verified environmental projects ensuring permanent and transparent carbon removal.
'Green Drive brings together innovation, data, and climate action in a simple, accessible way,' said Onur Elgun, CEO of CarbonSifr. 'The program allows students to partake in the UAE's first Eco-Friendly Driving Experience.'
Initially available to students enrolled in EDC's VIP car driving license packages, the program is seamlessly integrated into the learning journey, requiring no extra steps or changes to the curriculum. Upon completion of their training, students receive a Certificate of Appreciation, acknowledging their contribution to sustainable driving education.
The Green Drive program is designed to work with any vehicle type — not just electric or hybrid — and offers a unique blend of climate accountability and world-class driver instruction. EDC has plans to expand the initiative across additional license types and training packages in the coming months.
This partnership reinforces EDC's role as a forward-thinking leader in driver education, leveraging technology to elevate both safety and sustainability. It also supports Abu Dhabi's broader smart mobility vision by embedding environmental thinking into the earliest stages of road use and mobility engagement.

Multiply Group posts Dh214 million net profit in second quarter

Multiply Group, a leading Abu Dhabi-based investment holding firm, on Tuesday announced its Q2 2025 net profit at Dh214 million excluding fair value changes, with 39% revenue growth across the operating portfolio. Ebitda excluding fair value changes of stood at Dh395 million (Dh403 million in Q2 2024). Adjusting for the impact of the Kalyon Enerji joint venture (realising a share of loss as a result of foreign exchange losses arising from the revaluation of EUR-dominated loans), the Group's Ebitda rose 38 per cent year-on-year (YoY) for Q2 2025. Net profit from subsidiaries increased 52 per cent underpinned by solid growth across verticals. Reported profit of Dh532 million included Dh318 million in unrealised gains from revaluation, driven by periodic market fluctuations. The Group continues to focus on integrating operations across its verticals, with an emphasis on digital transformation and operational efficiency. These efforts have contributed to strong revenue momentum. Group revenue increased by 39 per cent YoY to Dh503 million, driven by growth across all verticals, the full-quarter consolidation of The Grooming Company Holding and the acquisition of Excellence Driving. Blended gross profit margin remained healthy at 52 per cent, reflecting continued profitability across the core portfolio. The Group's net profit from operating businesses increased by 52 per cent on the back of the Beauty vertical more than doubling net profit and the Mobility vertical increasing net profit by 48 per cent as a result of organic and inorganic growth while Media vertical grew by 23 per cent. The Group recorded a share of loss from Kalyon JV amounting to Dh54 million in Q2 2025 (Q2 2024 - Dh78 million gain) as a result of the foreign exchange losses from the revaluation of EUR-denominated loans on the back of a stronger Euro. The Group's balance sheet remains robust, with cash balance of Dh1.85 billion. Execution of its long-term strategy continues to deliver results, as the Group builds a diversified portfolio across core verticals while pursuing high-return investments under Multiply+ Under Multiply+, the Group's public market portfolio closed the quarter with a valuation of Dh32 billion, compared to an initial investment of Dh15 billion. Despite market fluctuations affecting the fair value of some assets, performance across the portfolio remains strong as does the underlying long-term potential from targeted investments. Samia Bouazza, group chief executive officer and managing director, said: 'This quarter's revenue growth of 39 per cent reflects the strong double-digit performance delivered across all verticals. This momentum translated into a 69 per cent increase in operating Ebitda and a 52 per cent rise in net income from our operating subsidiaries. These gains were partially offset by an adverse Dh132 million impact from our share of profit in the Kalyon joint venture, primarily due to foreign exchange losses arising from the revaluation of EUR-dominated loans. While our inorganic initiatives contributed to the Group's overall growth, organic Ebitda from our operating businesses increased by 54 per cent year-on-year, led by our Media & Mobility Verticals. During the quarter, we also signed a definitive agreement to divest our 100 per cent stake in PAL Cooling Holding, a prominent provider of district cooling solutions in the UAE catering to landmark residential, commercial and mixed-use developments in Abu Dhabi. The transaction, valued at c. Dh3.8 billion, will result in significant cash inflows. These proceeds will be strategically redeployed to support future growth opportunities as we actively evaluate options to optimize our balance sheet and strengthen Multiply Group's capital structure.'

Space42, Microsoft, and Esri sign MoU to enhance mapping capabilities across Africa

Abu Dhabi — Space42, the UAE-based global AI-powered SpaceTech company, part of technology group G42, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft and Esri to deliver high-resolution, scalable base maps across all 54 African countries, serving over 1.4 billion people. Known as the 'Map Africa Initiative,' the project will create the most comprehensive base map of the continent to date, addressing challenges in infrastructure, investment, and institutional gaps. The updated mapping system will catalyze economic development through increased access to intelligent solutions that support governments, businesses, and communities. The five-year collaboration aims to strengthen geospatial capabilities across Africa and the UAE, and provide precise and accessible data to national and regional stakeholders. The MoU was signed at Esri's 2025 User Conference. Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Smart Solutions at Space42, said, 'Partnership is core to the UAE's DNA, and is central to how Space42 operates. This collaboration with Microsoft and Esri is more than technical; it's strategic. It advances Space42's business priorities, strengthens our role as a trusted partner to governments, and delivers meaningful benefits to communities across Africa. Accurate, high-quality mapping and the intelligence solutions built on it are essential for growth, resilience, and inclusive innovation. With reliable data, communities and economies prosper.' Jack Dangermond, President of Esri said, 'We are proud to support the Map Africa Initiative in partnership with Space42. Transforming satellite imagery into detailed, accurate base maps at continental scale requires advanced geospatial technology and professional production workflows. These same capabilities have supported similar national and regional mapping efforts around the world. With Map Africa, we are helping to establish a foundational resource that will drive infrastructure planning, economic growth, and sustainable development across the continent.' A Transformative Investment in Africa's Digital Future Africa's maps are fragmented, outdated, or inaccessible, leaving governments and businesses to make major decisions with inaccurate and incomplete data. The Map Africa Initiative seeks to change that by producing continent-wide geospatial data that is accurate, timely, and locally managed. The process itself is collaborative from start to finish, bringing together the complementary strengths of each organisation. Space42 will lead fundraising efforts and project management, in addition to providing satellite data through sovereign capacities and commercial partners. It will process data using AI-powered Digital Twin models to produce dynamic, use-specific outputs and lead the Research & Development roadmap for new AI models and automation of map production workflows. Esri will orchestrate base map production workflows with its GeoAI and remote sensing capabilities, while also supporting regional hubs to train local teams and build long-term capacity. Microsoft will provide the secure cloud infrastructure and AI framework through Azure to support data processing, sharing, and integration at scale. Enabling Economic Opportunity, Resilience, and Innovation The initiative is expected to unlock long-term value across multiple industries: Ports and logistics: Detailed terrain and infrastructure mapping will improve route planning, reduce inefficiencies, and support Africa's emergence as a global logistics hub. Renewable energy: Site selection models will support optimal solar and wind deployment, improving efficiency and return on investment. Security and disaster response: Governments will be better equipped to monitor borders, track natural resources, and coordinate emergency responses. Smart cities and digital economies: Accurate maps are foundational to urban planning, public services, and technology deployment. The data will be licensed to national governments, enabling ownership and long-term updating by National Mapping Agencies. Over time, the initiative will also support a new commercial ecosystem of African startups. The data will eventually be housed in G42 and Microsoft-managed data centers across the continent. Strategic positioning for Space42 For Space42, the initiative represents more than a single project. It deepens long-standing partnerships with Microsoft and Esri, expands Space42's presence in Africa, and opens new commercial opportunities in analytics, licensing, and infrastructure support. The Map Africa Initiative is a testament to Space42's position as the global partner of choice for governments seeking geospatial data at scale, serving as both a strategic proof point and a commercial gateway to new markets. Peng Xiao, Group Chief Executive Officer at G42, said, 'We believe intelligence is the foundation for societal progress, yet it remains out of reach for millions across the Global South. This partnership is a decisive step toward closing that gap. Together with our partners, we will deliver AI-powered insights that enable African nations to plan smarter, build better, and grow more sustainably and responsibly. From agricultural optimization and natural resource management to strengthening public services infrastructure and economic empowerment, this partnership will help turn data into development, and intelligence into impact.' 'G42's partnership with Microsoft represents a shared commitment to harnessing AI as a global force for good. Together, we are building the infrastructure and applications that will extend the benefits of intelligence to communities across the world, transforming lives through technology that is trusted, responsible, and inclusive.' The initiative further pushes the limits of how technological innovation can advance communities and unlock economic opportunities. Aligning with the UAE's Global Investment and Innovation Agenda The UAE is Africa's largest foreign investor, with $44 billion in capital deployed in 2024 alone, nearly matching the combined investments of the UK and China. As the UAE's national space champion, Space42 advances this agenda by exporting AI and geospatial capabilities that enable data-driven development. By expanding the UAE's space ecosystem and fostering knowledge transfer across industries, Space42's geospatial mapping capabilities play a crucial role in building a future-ready, innovation-driven economy in both the UAE and Africa. For African countries, the mapping capabilities enable smarter land use, improved disaster response, modern infrastructure planning, and the foundations for smart cities and digital economies. For the UAE, this strategic engagement opens high-growth markets, deepens diplomatic and commercial ties, and consolidates its role as a global leader in AI-enabled space solutions.

Abu Dhabi Department of Energy organizes awareness sessions for gas system safety

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), in partnership with the Majalis Abu Dhabi at the Presidential Court, has organized a series of awareness briefings concerning safety procedures for gas systems inside buildings. These sessions took place during the first half of 2025 as part of the DoE's ongoing efforts to promote social awareness and consolidate public safety practices in the Emirate. This initiative is intended to spread best practices for the safe use of gas in both domestic and commercial environments, and to elevate the community's readiness for responding to emergencies. Such measures are instrumental in protecting lives and property and in raising safety levels throughout the different areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. There was broad community participation in the sessions, which took place in various community Majalis throughout Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. Those present were provided with the opportunity to put forward their questions, provide their comments, and share their own experiences. A number of DoE officials and employees were in attendance, with the objective of developing initiatives that yield a sustainable socio-economic impact. The importance of direct outreach to residents and the use of community Majalis as essential platforms for enhancing constructive discussion and listening to the feedback and suggestions of society's members was affirmed by Eng. Ahmed Alsheebani, Petroleum Products Sector Executive Director at DoE. He noted that this approach supports the evolution of services delivered within this vital sector. Furthermore, Al Alsheebani indicated that the DoE maintains its cooperation with gas service suppliers for the purpose of updating systems and adopting latest practices, with the objective of mitigating risks related to gas use and reinforcing the overall safety ecosystem. Falling under the umbrella of the "Year of Community," this initiative is also a component of the DoE's efforts to reinforce effective communication with the public. It does so by engaging with different societal segments and capitalizing on the essential function of the Majalis in promoting awareness and reinforcing a culture of safety. Sessions were conducted at a number of community Majalis, namely: the Mohammed bin Zayed City Majlis, Khalifa City Majlis, Al Falah Majlis, Al Rahbah Majlis, and the Hilal Zaid Al-Shehhi Majlis, along with the Remaah Majlis, the Al Alia Majlis in Al Ain City, and the Al Sila Majlis in the Al Dhafra area. About the Department of Energy - Abu Dhabi The Department of Energy - Abu Dhabi (DoE) was founded in 2018, guided by a vision to create a prosperous economy, a sustainable society, and a safe environment. The DoE is tasked with setting the policies, regulations, and strategies that underpin the transformation of the Emirate's energy sector, developing national talent and capabilities, and achieving a highly efficient energy ecosystem. The Department also focuses on protecting consumer interests, mitigating the environmental effects of the energy sector, and ensuring reliable, secure, and affordable energy services are provided through the adoption of latest smart and innovative technologies.
