PayPal have created the modern seaside seat which Brits can visit from the 9th August in Brighton, following research which revealed one in five Brits shop on their phones or tablets – at the beach.
A poll of 2,000 adults found clothes and fashion (37 per cent) are among the top purchases, with food and drink (34 per cent) and gifts for others (24 per cent) also on the cards.
With nearly a fifth (19 per cent) spending between £51-75 when shopping online at the beach, with some spending up to £200.
Phones overheating (43 per cent) and a lack of WiFi (36 per cent) are among the things holding consumers back from a seamless scrolling experience on the beach.
While a lack of shade (31 per cent) and getting sand in the phone charger hole (23 per cent) are other inhibitors.
Consumer behaviour and retail expert Dr. Amna Khan, speaking in partnership with the brand, said: 'Smartphones have transformed nearly every aspect of our lives, from how we navigate our cars to how we manage our health and shop for essentials.
'This digital shift has made shopping anytime, anywhere second nature – even on the beach, positioning it as the next frontier for a tech refresh.
'The once simple beach experience is getting a long-overdue upgrade.
'With tech-enhanced deckchairs featuring innovations like built-in glare-blocking screens, beachgoers can now seamlessly blend relaxation with connectivity, reflecting the evolving expectations of today's digital-first lifestyles.'
The research also lifted the lid on all the factors people consider when picking a perfect beach spot, with shade (48 per cent) ranking as the top factor ahead of privacy (40 per cent) and proximity to the bar (36 per cent).
When it comes to beach nostalgia, buckets, spades and sandcastles are among the items 70 per cent associate with childhood trips to the seaside, with arcades and slot machines also featuring (52 per cent).
Striped deckchairs were cited by 41 per cent, with mini fridges containing snacks (29 per cent), solar panels for charging (21 per cent) and pop-out book holders (25 per cent) among the other creative add-ons people would like to see incorporated in the classic beach staple.
Dave Jones, head of consumer from PayPal, which has introduced a three per cent cashback incentive to help people put money back their pockets, added: 'We can see from our research that more and more people are bringing their phones to the beach, and their shopping habits too.
'That's why we've reimagined the classic deckchair with a modern twist, making it easier to stay connected and even earn cashback while soaking up the sun.'

Brits who left university in the last 27 years could be 'owed thousands'

Finance experts have urged any former university students to check their paperwork, as more than one million could be owed up to thousands of pounds. According to the consumer website Money Saving Expert (MSE) many Brits could have overpaid on their student loans. These loans are provided to help students cover their tuition fees as well as living costs. While they are therefore vital to ensure many people are even able to attend university, they can leave people with lingering debts. And over the course of a year it is estimated that more than one million university students overpay on their loans. In a post made to social media platform Facebook, MSE said: 'Left uni at any point in the last 10 or 15 years? Check now if you can reclaim £100s or even £1,000s. 'Every year 100,000s of university leavers overpay their student loans, often without realising!' On its website MSE, which was founded by Martin Lewis, explained more. It said: 'Many have student loan repayments automatically deducted from their wages each month, and assume all is well. Yet 100,000s accidentally overpay their student loans each year, often without realising. 'Here's how to check if you're one of them and, if so, how you can reclaim £100s, or even £1,000s. In the last tax year alone, over one million university leavers overpaid their student loans, according to the latest figures released by the Student Loans Company (SLC).' The site provided a guide to determine whether you have been affected by these overpayments. But it only applies to those who went to university in the last 27 years - meaning they had to start in 1998 or later. 'Over recent years, the Student Loans Company has introduced a number of initiatives to reduce overpayments and improve the repayment process for students,' it said. 'This includes introducing an online repayment service, issuing automatic refunds and actively contacting those who might have overpaid. 'While these changes have helped to reduce the number of students making overpayments, more than a million former students still overpaid in the 2022/23 tax year – so it's well worth checking.' According to the site, there are four main reasons you might have overpaid your student loan: You repaid the loan in some months despite not earning enough in the full year to take you over the repayment threshold You're on the wrong payment plan by default You've started repaying too early You had money deducted after the loan was fully repaid To find out more and to check if you could have overpaid you can visit the MSE website here. How to claim the money back The steps you need to take are different depending on the reason you have been overpaying. If payments were deducted from your pay despite the fact that your total earnings for the year were below the repayment threshold, you can request a refund from SLC online. If you're on the wrong student loan payment plan by default, you will need to speak to your employer or call SLC. You can call them on 0300 100 0611. You should also call SLC if you started repaying your loan too early. However, if you had money deducted after the loan was fully repaid you don't need to do anything. MSE explained: 'If you've paid over your loan balance and additional payments are taken, you're due a credit balance refund. You don't need to do anything for this, if SLC can verify your bank account is still active and used by you, a refund will automatically be paid into your account. 'Meaning it's important to keep your contact information, including bank details and email address up-to-date. Alternatively they will contact you to tell you how to get a refund. If you've overpaid and have not heard from SLC you can ask them for a refund.' A number of MSE readers wrote to the site about their experience claiming back the cash. Melissa said: 'Just wanted to say a massive thank you as I read your article on overpaying on student loan repayments and realised there was a chance I had overpaid. 'Turns out I had and I've since received a refund of £900! I've been doing house renovations this year so this money has been incredibly handy in going towards them.' Lisa added: 'I spent 15 minutes on the phone and got £555 back for overpayments on my student loan. Most was because of my maternity leave. Thanks so much, couldn't have come at a better time.'

Direct flights cancelled from major UK airport as European airline ditches popular route
A European airline has announced it will run its last flight from a UK airport in October 2025 - meaning an end to the only direct service between these two major cities A European airline has confirmed it will stop direct journeys between two cities come autumn. Once operating a service of six flights per week, the now-scrapped flight was the only direct route connecting one major UK city to Brussels. In July 2025, Brussels Airlines announced it will stop direct journeys between the Belgian capital of Brussels and Birmingham, UK. The last Brussels Airlines flight departing on this route will take off this October. The decision will allow Brussels Airlines to focus on other services. A spokesperson for Brussels Airlines told Sun Travel: "Like many airlines, we constantly review our network. At the beginning of every season, some destinations might see higher frequencies and we might decrease capacity to some other markets. "In that light, we have indeed decided not to offer Birmingham anymore as of Winter 25. We remain active on other routes in the United Kingdom, such as Manchester (13 flights weekly) and London Heathrow (20 flights weekly) and Edinburgh." Flights to Birmingham were only just reinstated in October 2024, but have now been dropped from Brussels Airlines' Winter 2025/26 and Summer 2026 schedules. Travellers departing from Birmingham will now have to fly to Brussels via a connecting flight from Birmingham - as opposed to the previous 70-minute direct journey. Alternatively, travellers can depart from Birmingham and reach Brussels via Munich. According to Visit Britain, travellers from Belgium made 19.2 million outbound visits to the UK in 2024, with a total international tourism expenditure of US$27billion (£20bn). Additionally, in 2023, the UK welcomed 867,000 visitors from Belgium, with an average spend of £555 per visit. Conversely, around 820,000 British tourists visit Brussels every year, to see famous landmarks including the Grand Place and the Maison du Roi. Other big draws to the Belgian capital include the local culinary specialties. Moules-frites - aka mussels and fries - as well as Belgian waffles and traditional chocolate are all part of the city's unique appeal. That said, Brussels is not the only Belgian city worth visiting. In 2024, Bruges was named the best one to visit from the UK by train by consumer champions Which?. Approximately a 3.5-hour train ride from London, Bruges makes for a great alternative for Brits looking to see another side of Belgium. Despite the disappointing news about the Birmingham-to-Brussels service, Brussels Airlines has said it is ready for a busy summer holiday season. The airline will operate a fleet of 50 aircraft, compared to 44 aircraft in summer 2024, and transport nearly 2 million passengers. Brussels Airlines serves 12 Spanish destinations, with Malaga, Barcelona and Alicante as most popular ones for passengers traveling from Belgium. The airline also notes the popularity of services to Greece and Italy.

Mr Trump spoke of his 'great love' for Scotland and said he wanted to see the nation 'thrive' ahead of his discussions with the Prime Minister that were expected to focus on Gaza and trade. The American leader attacked Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan as a 'nasty person' and hailed both Sir Keir and Nigel Farage as 'great men' as the leaders took a series of questions across domestic and foreign affairs. The president also indicated that the US may not impose heavy tariffs on British pharmaceuticals, telling reporters that 'we certainly feel a lot better' about the UK working on drugs that will be sold in the States compared to other nations. Mr Trump and Sir Keir took questions for more than an hour in a meandering press conference ahead of their meeting at Turnberry on Tuesday afternoon. Referring to the Prime Minister and the Reform UK leader, the US president said: 'I happen to like both men. I like this man (Sir Keir) a lot, and I like Nigel. 'And, you know, I don't know the politics over here. I don't know where they stand. I would say one is slightly liberal – not that liberal, slightly – and the other one is slightly conservative, but they're they're both good men.' He added: '(Sir Keir) did a great thing with the economy, because a lot of money is going to come in because of the deal that was made. But I think that, I think that immigration is now bigger than ever before.' The president had earlier said that he thinks Sir Keir, who has been in office for more than a year, will be 'a tax cutter.' The two leaders were expected to discuss trade as part of their meeting, weeks after Mr Trump unveiled a new tariff regime for goods entering the US from other nations. Asked by reporters whether his plans for an import levy on medicines would affect the UK, the US president told reporters: 'We will be announcing on pharmaceuticals some time in the very near future. We have a very big plan on pharmaceuticals. 'We want to bring a lot of the pharmaceuticals back to America, where they should be.' He later added: 'You also have a good pharmaceutical business – we'll be dealing with you on pharmaceuticals also – and we certainly feel a lot better with your country working on pharmaceuticals for America than some of the other countries that were … with the relationship we have, you would not use that as a cudgel. You wouldn't be using it as a block.' During the same press conference, Mr Trump described the Labour London mayor Sir Sadiq as a 'nasty person' who has done 'a terrible job', while Sir Keir jumped to his defence. Speaking to reporters, the US president said: 'I'm not a fan of your mayor. I think he's done a terrible job, the Mayor of London … a nasty person.' The Prime Minister intervened to say: 'He's a friend of mine, actually.' The question session inside the President's Turnberry resort came after he suggested that the UK is 'doing a fantastic thing' in trying to reduce immigration via small boat crossings. Mr Trump said he knows 'nothing about the boats' when asked about the issue but said 'my hats are off to you' if the UK is trying to reduce immigration. Sir Keir and his wife Lady Starmer were greeted by the President and a chorus of bagpipes as they arrived in South Ayrshire on Monday. When Mr Trump was asked about how he would deal with small boats, Sir Keir explained that it refers to people who are crossing the Channel. Mr Trump told reporters: 'If you're stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people … my hats are off to you. You're doing, not a good thing, you're doing a fantastic thing. 'So, I know nothing about the boats, but if the boats are loaded up with bad people, and they usually are, because, you know, other countries don't send their best, they send people that they don't want, and they're not stupid people, and they send the people that they don't want.' Turning to the Prime Minister, Mr Trump added: 'And I've heard that you've taken a much stronger stance on this.' The latest data from the Home Office indicates that 122 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday. Asked about tariffs on whisky, Mr Trump said: 'We'll talk about that, I didn't know whisky was a problem. I'm not a big whisky drinker but maybe I should be.' And he said of the special relationship: 'Our relationship is unparalleled.' The meeting between the leaders comes as part of Mr Trump's five-day, private trip to Scotland. No 10 said they reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and agreed to continue talks on the UK-US trade deal during their private talks at Turnberry. They also discussed plans for the president's upcoming state visit in September, a Downing Street spokesperson said.
