Al Hilal withdraw from the Saudi Super Cup

Reuters2 days ago
July 21 (Reuters) - Al Hilal are to skip the 2025-26 Saudi Super Cup, set for next month, amid their hectic schedule.
Al Hilal finished the recent Saudi Pro League season second behind champions Al-Ittihad in late May, having been knocked out of the King's Cup quarter-finals and AFC Champions League elite semis.
The Riyadh-based club then headed to the United States, where they kicked off their Club World Cup campaign on June 18 against giants Real Madrid.
They made it to the knockout stages, where they stunned Manchester City in the last 16 before losing to Fluminense in the quarter-finals on July 4.
The Saudi Super Cup is to be held between August 19-23 in Hong Kong, with the league campaign usually getting underway in late August.
Their CWC campaign and following flight complications "reduced the players' annual leave to only 24 days in the event of withdrawal, and to 21 days if the club participated in the Super Cup," with the rules granting them "a minimum of 28 days of annual leave," the club said in a statement.
Al Hilal were forced to postpone their pre-season preparations, "which further increased the competitive imbalance among participating clubs," the statement ran citing a letter sent to the local soccer federation.
The Saudi federation (SAFF) said, in response, they "will begin taking the necessary measures in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations through the relevant committees," without providing more details.

Gary Lineker makes Marcus Rashford prediction after Barcelona move

Gary Lineker has tipped Marcus Rashford to shine on loan at Barcelona after leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window. Rashford's loan deal will last for 12 months and includes an option for the Spanish top-flight champions to buy him at the end of the season. Barcelona reportedly must pay United €35m (£30.3m) to transform the loan spell into a permanent transfer in the summer of 2026. The Catalan club will cover Rashford's wages during his season-long loan after the 27-year-old forward agreed to take a 25 per cent pay cut. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'I think he will do great,' Lineker, who was the last male English player at Barcelona before Rashford, told Sky Sports about the move. 'I think it is a great challenge. Yes, they have got brilliant players, it will be tough to play regularly. But there are so many games that they play now. 'They have got a front three of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal but you can't play three players every game in and out. 'And Lewandowski (36) is past his best really now. It's remarkable for what he is achieving at this age. FC Barcelona and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the loan of the player Marcus Rashford until 30 June 2026. The agreement also establishes an option to buy the English forward. — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 23, 2025 'I think this is a good signing for Barcelona as well, and Marcus at his best is unbelievable.' Lineker added: 'Let's look at what's happened to the players who have left Manchester United recently, the players who you thought are really struggling, they have done unbelievably well everywhere else. 'So, there is something at Manchester United at the moment that is a little bit wrong. The players who have got away from there have generally succeeded. 'Like we've seen at Villa, he was terrific. And I think he can do the same sort of thing for Barcelona. I very much hope so.' The move means Rashford may've already played his final game for United, following 426 appearances, after progressing through the club's academy. Rashford has spent the last 20 years at Old Trafford – joining the club at the age of seven from Fletcher Moss Rangers. He has registered 138 goals and 77 assists for the Red Devils but has struggled for form at United for around two years and was dramatically banished from the first team by Ruben Amorim in December. Rashford was subsequently sent out on loan to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign. During his time at Villa, Rashford rediscovered his form, producing six assists and four goals (10 goal involvements) across 17 appearances. Setting out to defend the title they won in 2022, the England Lionesses are through to the finals of the Women's Euro 2025. Held for the first time in Switzerland, the tournament will conclude on Sunday, 27 July. Fresh from defeating Wales and Sweden, England came out on top against Italy in a tense match that went into extra time. Staging a last-minute comeback, teenage striker Michelle Agyemang came off the bench to equalise in the 96th minute of the game. The 19-year-old went on to score England's second goal that sent them into the Women's Euro final. Captain Sarina Wiegman's side secured their place in history when they claimed the trophy, which was England's first-ever major women's European Championship win. Defeating Germany 2-1 in the final match at Wembley Stadium, the team brought the title home with celebrations among football fans across the country. Ex-Premier League star ‘drowned in pool in Greece on day before he was due to fly back to UK for son's first birthday'

A FORMER Premier League star drowned in his pool in Greece on the day before he was due to fly back to the UK for his son's birthday, an inquest heard. George Baldock was discovered at his home in Athens in October where he had been living after signing for Panathinaikos. 3 A coroner today ruled the death of the 31-year-old, who had previously played for MK Dons and Sheffield United, was an accident. The inquest in Buckinghamshire was told no evidence of criminal activity was found by Greek police. A post mortem also found no drugs or alcohol in his system, with his cause of death given as drowning. It also showed Baldock had a very large heart "that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrythmias" - meaning his heart beat too fast or slow. The court heard the defender had played a club fixture just three days before the horror. Baldock had also tragically been due to fly home to the UK the following day to celebrate his son's first birthday. Previous reports said his worried partner had raised the alarm after she struggled to track him down. The owner of the house in the Glyfada area of Athens then discovered Baldock in the pool. Attempts were made to resuscitate the footballer but tragically he couldn't be saved. His family said: "George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person. "Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. "We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son." Although he was born in England, Baldock played for Greece 12 times through his nan's heritage. After graduating from MK Dons' youth academy, he had stints at Oxford United, Tamworth and Northampton Town. Baldock moved to Sheffield United in 2017 and made more than 219 appearances for the club. He earned the nickname Furious George due to his aggressive all-action style. The footballer left the club in 2024 to sign for Panathinaikos, where he made four appearances before his tragic death. Tributes flooded in for Baldock following the horror, including from Manchester United star Harry Maguire, who graduated through the Blades' youth team before leaving in 2014. He posted a picture of Baldock on his Instagram page with a broken heart emoji. Panathinaikos said in a statement: "We are shocked by the loss of our George. "The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock." While Sheffield United said: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. "The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. "The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends." 3 3
