The Autoblog spy photographers have caught the high-performance version of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan, and according to them, the smallest hot EV to come out of Affalterbach will be called the AMG CLA EQ. That's a far less awkward name than G 580 with EQ Technology, but most won't care as much about the name as they do about what it represents. And according to our sources, this hot subcompact will be a high-performance feast of technology. With these images showing a nearly-ready prototype with production bodywork, though, we have to address what we can see before discussing that which we can't.

CLA Becomes A Baby AMG GT 4-Door
As was the case with the regular electric CLA, the AMG version will closely resemble its combustion-powered sibling. Obvious exceptions in the CLA EQ's styling are evident in that the front bumper has only a lower intake grille, and the area where the Three-pointed Star will sit is a blank plate, while the rear diffuser trim has no cutouts for the traditional quartet of exhaust tips typically used to indicate AMG power. Nevertheless, the front end will look aggressive, with large lower side intakes in an AMG-specific bumper, while the fenders will each gain a piece of trim that will doubtless be badged. From the front three-quarter angle, this looks like a downsized AMG GT 4-Door, rather than just a hotted-up CLA, so well done to the designers.
Although mismatched, the wheels are also clearly from the AMG warehouse, though it's possible that new designs will be offered when this EQ arrives. At the rear, a deployable adaptive spoiler (that our spies say the driver deactivated using a button, indicating a possible manual override feature) will give all who follow no doubt as to the performance credentials of this pocket rocket. We're calling it now – this will be one of the best-looking performance EVs on the market.
Not Your Average Performance EV
This vehicle was being unloaded at AMG's testing center at the Nürburgring, which means that it'll be taking to the track soon, if it hasn't already by the time this article reaches your eyes. However, the lack of perforations on the brake discs of this test mule suggests that this may be the warm AMG, not the hot one. A CLA EQ 35, if you will. For the cream of the crop, our spies say to expect a pair of electric motors – one per axle – to produce a combined 550 horsepower. Interestingly, the front motor is said to remain idle in most operating conditions to maximize range (which Mercedes reportedly expects to be around 700 kilometers, or 434 miles), but the hooligan in your head is likely already wondering how to use that system to perform ludicrous drifts. With this prototype very close to the finished product, we expect Mercedes to unleash the AMG CLA EQ before the end of the year, so it won't be a long wait.

While production specifications are yet to be announced, we expect the Epiq vRS to boast at least 220bhp from a single, front-mounted electric motor, ensuring the downsized performance car is good for 0-62mph in less than seven seconds. Skoda's engineers will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the newly revealed Peugeot E-208 GTi, which was shown at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race earlier this month. We know much less about this model, but given its size and weight, any vRS version is all but certain to boast dual motors producing more than 350bhp combined, plus bespoke, lowered suspension and bigger brakes. Such a model is at least two years away, however. While the majority of Skoda's new vRS models will be electric, we're still holding out hope for a hot version of the firm's range-topping Superb saloon and Estate model. When asked whether such a car was in the plan – as we've reported previously – Kroll's excitable smile spoke a thousand words: 'You are not the only one,' he said. 'I can only tell you this.' Future vRS models should turn the performance dial up a notch, too. Previous examples have often been criticised for their occasionally lukewarm demeanour, but Kroll referenced the Enyaq RS Race concept as a testbed for future technologies including sound generators and software that can mimic a combustion car's automatic transmission. 'Everything that is missing in terms of old emotions,' Kroll admitted, 'what we are used to from the good old days, it's in [the Enyaq RS Race concept]. You see it, and you hear it. Here you have the torque – that gives a certain amount of emotion – but the rest is what's missing. Then you have to add, you know, the sound, and the changing of the gears… That kind of thing. 'What you see on electric cars today, on RS, is just the beginning,' Kroll insisted. 'We will, for sure, try to push even more – going in the direction of what we are used to from the ICE [cars].' Whatever happens, vRS is set to remain a Skoda staple. Previously, CEO Klaus Zellmer, told us: 'vRS is absolutely part of our future. If you look at what we've done with Enyaq, it's a fabulous top-of-the-line vehicle – arguably the most aspirational car in our line-up, with four-wheel drive, around 300bhp. The price is higher, but it's still a value proposition in terms of performance for the money. 'People are more proud of their cars than ever these days, and yes, they're willing to spend more,' Zellmer added. 'Which means a good [profit] margin, from our perspective. ‘I'd rather travel by horse or donkey than drive an electric car'
Electric vehicles (EVs) are the most likely type of car to break down, according to a major survey of tens of thousands of drivers. The latest What Car? Reliability Survey found that 16.8 per cent of EV owners reported a breakdown in the past two years – a higher rate than petrol (10.7 per cent), hybrid (14 per cent), and diesel (15 per cent) car owners. Telegraph readers have long expressed scepticism about switching to electric cars and according to an exclusive Telegraph poll, a striking 83 per cent of more than 270,000 respondents said they would not buy an EV. 'EVs are manifestly inferior' For many, like reader Glenn Ewen, buying an electric car is 'senseless'. Mr Ewen says: 'If EVs were viable, they would have flooded the market by now, but they're not. The average driver will have very little use for one.' Reader Nigel Curtress, from Surrey, argues that electric cars are 'manifestly inferior to the product they are trying to replace.' Among Mr Curtress' chief concerns is the overall cost of owning an EV, which he says is 'materially higher than the equivalent ICE. They cost more to buy and depreciate at an eye-watering rate.' Inconvenience is another major concern for Mr Curtress. At a wedding he recently attended, guests with electric cars who were staying overnight had to compete for the two charge points in the hotel car park. He says: 'Many had long journeys the following day. I am not kidding, they were setting alarms in the middle of the night for their one hour time slot [at the charge point]. It sounds like a joke, but it's the reality of living with an EV.' Reader Philip Graham, 54, took the plunge and bought an EV, however just three years later, he couldn't wait to get rid of it. Mr Graham, who lives in Bury St Edmunds, West Suffolk, took advantage of government incentives to buy a small electric car. However, he sold his Honda E Advance when the repayment scheme came to an end and reverted back to a petrol car. In addition to the serious battery issues, which were particularly bad in the cold winter months, Mr Graham says: 'The Honda E was exceptionally difficult to connect to the Honda App, which you need to control practically every aspect of the vehicle. They talk about 'range anxiety', but that car gave you that feeling in spades every time you got in it.' When asked what it would take to buy another EV, Mr Graham proclaims: 'If it was the last car in the world, I'd still rather travel by horse or donkey.' In agreement, John Evans adds: 'I've never been so relieved to get rid of a vehicle as I was when I sold my Porsche Taycan EV. The problems are too many to list. I will never have another full EV.' 'Petrol cars are yesterday's technology' Despite the overwhelming majority of Telegraph readers who voted that they would never buy an electric car, a spirited few made the case for why it was a worthwhile investment. Stuart Hargreaves, 55, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire recently became an EV owner. After weighing the pros and cons he decided to buy a two-and-a-half-year-old Hyundai Ioniq and 'hasn't looked back.' Mr Hargreaves shares: 'It is extremely efficient and easily averages five plus miles per kwh. I am self-sufficient in charging my car and don't have any expensive and inconvenient visits to dirty petrol stations anymore.' Likewise, an anonymous reader adds: 'The whole car industry is having to shift to a new paradigm. Internal combustion engines are yesterday's technology.' While reader Percy Flage argues: 'The Government should subsidise EV purchases and invest in the charging infrastructure.' Colin and Sue Sutter, both in their 80s are also proud EV owners. The pair bought a Kia E-Nero five years ago and have never had an issue with their car. 'We've driven it from our home in Bedfordshire to Scotland and have never had a problem finding a charge. On a day-to-day basis, we drive it, return home and recharge it overnight on cheap electricity. It is easy to fuel, easy to run and so quiet.' Mr Sutter says he doesn't understand all of the hate EVs get: 'Our car has never caught fire and [our battery] has never run out. If you are scared of change, or a slave to the oil and gasoline companies, that's your problem, but do please grow up!'
