AI 171 crash: 231 victims identified after DNA matching, 210 bodies handed over to kin
Ahmedabad: Until 6pm on Friday, forensics experts had identified 231 victims of the AI 171 crash after DNA cross-verification and handed over 210 bodies to their grieving families, Civil Hospital officials said.
"While 10 families have informed us that they will be reaching the hospital soon to collect the mortal remains for the last rites, three bodies will be handed over only after the completion of airline transfer formalities. Eight families have at least one member identified based on DNA profiling but are awaiting identification of the others," said Dr Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, on Wednesday evening.
Of the 210 bodies handed over to the families, 155 are of Indian citizens, 36 of British nationals, seven of Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national. Eleven of the deceased are non-passengers, the officials said.
"Out of the Indian nationals identified so far, 60 are from Ahmedabad, 23 from Anand, 21 from Vadodara, 14 from Diu, 11 from Surat and Kheda each, nine from Mumbai and seven from Bharuch and Udaipur each," Dr Joshi said.

Of the 71 patients admitted to the hospital after the crash, five are still under treatment. The majority suffered burns and fractures, hospital sources said.
With about 16 bodies identified through genetic analysis in the past 24 hours, the forensic experts have entered the most challenging phase of the DNA profiling effort. Sources said the samples that remain are charred and experts are trying to extract DNA from the bone and tooth pulp tissue.
They added that in most cases, the bodies are desiccated, and thus tissue cannot be used for DNA extraction. Experts said that the retrieval and matching of DNA are long processes.
Even as the crowd has thinned out at Civil Hospital, teams of counsellors and govt officials are working to coordinate with the families. Sources said that in a week after the incident, most victims have been identified, and help is being extended to the families to send the mortal remains to places within or outside Gujarat.

Van driver & pharmacy student found dead in under-renovation building in Solapur
Kolhapur: A van driver and a pharmacy student, both aged 23, were found hanging with a stole in an under-renovation building belonging to the driver's employer in Solapur's Karnik Nagar area on Thursday evening. The post-mortem confirmed suicide by hanging and a note, allegedly written by the student, described a brother-sister-like bond between the two. Police identified the deceased as Rohit Thankedar from Solapur's Maddi Vasti and Ashwini Viresh Keshapure, a pharmacy student currently residing in Karnataka's Bagalkote. Her parents, however, live in Solapur. The MIDC police in Solapur city have registered a case of accidental death. Inspector Pramod Waghmare of MIDC police said, "We found a page-long suicide note, likely written by Keshapure, where she described a brother-sister-like bond with Thankedar. The note also mentioned two others, a man and a woman, who will be interrogated." According to the police, Keshapure got acquainted with Thankedar through the man named in the note. Waghmare said prima facie it seemed to be a case of a love affair and suspicion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: Just Add 1 Drop Of This Household Item To Any Dark Spot And Wait 3 Minutes Undo "Keshapure's parents only recently met Thankedar when he visited their home a few times, while Thankedar's family was unaware of Keshapure. According to the student's relatives, she referred to Thankedar as her 'Manlela Bhau' (like a brother). Thankedar often rested in the under-renovation room, which lacked doors and windows," Waghmare said. The police said Keshapure posted a photo on her social media a day ago describing Thankedar more than a real brother. Thankedar also had a social media update with a photo and a caption in Hindi suggesting Keshapure was more than a mother to him. "The student came to Solapur on Wednesday and told her parents that she needed the original copy of her mother's Aadhaar card. On Thursday morning, her mother dropped her at the autorickshaw stand. After a couple of hours, she did not take the calls from her family members despite repeated attempts," Waghmare said. The employer told the police that Thankedar used to seek advance money, stating that he needed it for his pregnant wife. Waghmare said so far, there was no confirmation if Thankedar was married.

Yalburga seer's yoga routine benefits devotees
1 2 Yalburga (Koppal): A few people in Yalburga town receive a call as early as 4.30am. "Om Sri Guru Basavalingaya Namah. Good morning, get up, join us for yoga," says Basavalingeshwara Swamiji of Sridhar Muradi Hiremath. At this Lingayat-Veerashaiva mutt in town, the seer has maintained a yoga tradition for nearly two decades. "My yoga journey began during my teenage years at the Shivayoga Mandir in Badami, Bagalkot district, and it kept me healthy even at 53," he reveals. After taking sanyasa vows, Basavalingeshwara Swamiji learned yoga alongside essential rituals and protocols required to lead the mutt. Unlike others who discontinued yoga after departing the Shivayoga Mandir, he has maintained his practice throughout the years, even after becoming the head of Yalburga Mutt. Speaking to TOI, Swamiji said: "Yoga has imparted significant lessons to me and brought me immense peace. I aspire to share this with others. Yoga is meant for those who are genuinely interested. To date, I have taught yoga to thousands, and hundreds continue to practice it regularly. Many have pursued further studies and are now teaching others. This brings me immense joy." Proficient in numerous asanas from basic to advanced, Basavalingeshwara Swamiji considers yoga as a path for physical and mental development, rather than self-promotion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Discover Effortless Glucose Monitoring: Request a Free Trial Dexcom Try Now Undo "Therefore, I do not advertise it on social media. This practice is for those who wish to engage in it, either in groups or privately," he states. Daily morning yoga sessions occur at the premises of Sridhar Muradi Hiremath in the town. Swamiji personally calls regular practitioners to wake them, while others arrive independently. He guides participants through postures suitable to their abilities, demonstrating advanced asanas to experienced practitioners. Following each session, participants receive prasad comprising nutritious sprouts and fruits. Yoga sessions often include personality development discussions and religious discourse. This programme has been held consistently for the past two decades. "Beyond religious activities, Swamiji created an environment incorporating education, literature, music, and yoga through the mutt. Basavalingeshwara Swamiji, who is knowledgeable in Ayurveda, also oversees agricultural activities and cowsheds. His guidance enabled us to adopt healthy practices," says devotee Sharanabasappa Danakai. "World Yoga Day can illustrate its significance, but practising yoga for just one day is ineffective," notes the seer, highlighting that consistent daily practice promotes a healthier lifestyle, supporting holistic personal development.
