
Dior show packs drama and intrigue for Maria Grazia Chiuri's love letter to Rome
Dior's first catwalk show in Rome was a night of high drama on and off the catwalk that left the fashion industry with a cliffhanger ending. Borrowing the original working title of Federico Fellini's film 8 ½, Maria Grazia Chiuri, designer of Dior since 2016, called it 'The Beautiful Confusion.'
She was talking about Rome, with its heady jumble of art, culture, faith and mopeds, and about a collection in which haute couture pieces were mixed with theatrical costumes. But there was also an inescapable allusion to the question of her own future of Dior.
Even before the show opened, operatically coded with models in Venetian masks and knots of Eyes Wide Shut lace pageanting at nightfall through the central parterre of a villa packed with Roman antiquities, the evening was ablaze with intrigue. Chiuri was born and began her career in Rome, and the deeply personal nature of the show, which was a passionate love letter to her home city, fuelled longstanding rumours that this was orchestrated as a swansong.
Chiuri has tripled sales at Dior during her nine-year tenure, but the Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, recently appointed to lead menswear design at the house, is seen as waiting in the wings to assume complete creative control of the house. The plot thickened when it emerged that this cruise collection would also include looks from the autumn haute couture collection, which would normally be under wraps until July, putting a question mark over Dior's plans for the next Paris season.
Like a Fellini film, there was no neat ending. The evening finished without official news, and with Dior's next chapter unwritten. But if it was a farewell, it was a fond and fabulous one for a designer whose progressive vision of fashion's power to platform feminism, female artists and the under-celebrated history of female creativity has been a gamechanger for her industry.
Guests had been issued with a dress code – white for women, black for men – taken from a white ball thrown in 1930 by the Roman patron Mimì Pecci-Blunt – 'an extraordinary woman who loved the arts', Chiuri said before the show. The effect was to synthesise the front row with a collection that was 90% white, drawing the audience into the story.
Each outfit brought the drama: a tailcoat suit with tiny ivory silk buttons; silvered latticework fit for a Renaissance princess, translucent classical gowns that looked like marble goddesses come to life; liturgical pomp in capes and collars tipping a hat to the Vatican in its jubilee year. The 450-strong guest list was heavily tilted toward Chiuri's friends and family, and luminaries of the Roman fashion and art world.

'My last show in Rome was for another brand, and it was over 10 years ago, so this is a big emotional moment for me,' Chiuri said before the show. The storytelling on the catwalk had close links to a personal project that Chiuri and her daughter Rachele Regini have masterminded and financed independent of Dior. The pair have renovated Teatro della Cometa, a 233-seat experimental theatre that was founded by Mimì Pecci-Blunt and became a cultural hotspot in the city when it opened in 1958, but closed just eleven years later after a fire.
Drama aside, however, there are more prosaic possible explanations for Dior staging a show in Rome. Christian Dior himself loved the country, declaring in a letter home from holiday in Capri in 1957 that 'this is paradise!' More pragmatically, Italy has been the chosen destination for several luxury houses this year, with Gucci and Chanel staging shows in Lake Como and Florence respectively. In a challenging economic environment, the timeless elegance of Italy is seen as a reliably desirable backdrop for fashion.

Natasha Hamilton opened up about her secret skin cancer battle in an emotional Good Morning Britain interview on Friday. The former Atomic Kitten singer, 42, gave fans a health update as she spoke about her diagnosis of Basal-cell carcinoma -which she received last year - with hosts Kate Garraway, 58, and Robert Rinder, 47. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a type of non-melanoma skin cancer. Non-melanoma means it does not involve skin pigment cells. Kate pointed out: 'I was saying thankfully because we want to establish that you are now fine. You're cancer free and all is good, but you're a living health warning in a way.' Natasha said: 'I am. now I have to be really vigilant, I have to check my skin all the time. 'Since then I've had a few things appear where I've had to go back to the dermatologist, they're on the "watch list". Natasha said: 'So I had been on holiday, I wasn't actually in the sun a lot, my baby was only about five months old and I was breastfeeding. 'One afternoon I had her on my lap, my back was in the sun and I burnt. 'I don't know if it was later that day or the next day, I had an itchy spot on my back, i thought it was a mosquito bite... 'I felt it, I went "oh mosquito bite". 'It wasn't until four weeks later when I was at home and it was itching I was like hang on a minute that seems a bit long for a mosquito bite. 'I asked my hub to have look and he went oh that's not a bite, he took a picture, I looked at it and I went I think I know what that is. 'Originally it had just been a dark freckle. 'I had on my back for many years, it wasn't raised it wasn't a mole. ' 'It was just a freckle.' Kate then asked her about her sunbed use from her Atomic Kitten days, to which Natasha said: 'People of my age will probably feel the same or remember, if you were going on a night out, you used a sunbed cos you wanted that sun kissed look to make yourself feel good, to give you a bit of confidence. 'If I was going to do something like Top of The Pops, or a big TV show, I'd want to look sun kissed, so we would go to the sunbeds. 'There was a sun bed shop facing the hotel that we stayed in all the time in London. 'I used tan accelerators and I can honestly say I don't think that there was ever a time when I went on a sun bed that I didn't burn, looking back now. 'I'm type one skin anyway, I'm not supposed to be in such intense sun.' The star also revealed that her mum has also had her own battle with skin cancer. Natasha explained: 'Two years previous, my mum had been suffering with a patch of dry skin that wouldn't heal. 'I wasn't anything ominous looking, it was a piece of skin. 'I said to her go and see a dermo, I'd done a lot of research previous. 'Initially she was told it was nothing and sent away. 'That was at the doctors, a year later, I saw it and it looked sore and aggravated, I said mum please ask them to refer you to a dermatologist. 'Straight away they said look it is skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a type of non-melanoma skin cancer. Non-melanoma means it does not involve skin pigment cells. BCC makes up more than 80 per cent of all forms of skin cancer in the UK and US. About 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the US and around 100,000 in the UK. It is mainly caused by overexposure to UV light from the sun or tanning beds. BCC can occur anywhere on the body but is most common on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck and ears. The following people are most at risk: People with fair skin or hair Those who work outdoors People who use sunbeds Those with a personal history of the condition BCC is usually painless. Early symptoms often only include a scab that bleeds occasionally and does not heal. Some appear as flat, red, scaly marks or have a pearl-like rim. The latter can then erode into a ulcer. Others are lumpy with shiny nodules crossed by blood vessels. Most BCCs can be cured, however, treatment is complex if they are left for a long time. Treatment usually involves removing the cancerous tumour and some of the surrounding skin.

National Lottery to suffer 36-hour outage in rush to deliver botched tech update
The National Lottery will be plunged into a 36-hour blackout this summer as its new owner rushes to deliver a botched tech upgrade. Allwyn, which is controlled by Czech billionaire Karel Komarek, has warned retailers their National Lottery terminals will stop working for around 36 hours while systems are updated. In a statement to shop owners this week, Andria Vidler, the chief executive of Allwyn UK, said: 'Technical switchover will happen over one weekend this summer, and to enable the new systems to go live, National Lottery terminals will be inactive for approximately 36 hours.' Ms Vidler did not provide a date for the shutdown, but asked retailers for their 'help and diligence to ensure a seamless transition'. It is understood that the upgrade will begin at about 11pm on a Saturday night to reduce disruption and loss of earnings. The National Lottery does not trade overnight and no draw-based games take place on a Sunday. Allwyn has pledged to overhaul the National Lottery's estate of 43,500 terminals at a cost of £350m. The update is critical to the company's promise to double the lottery's contribution to good causes. However, the IT upgrade has been plagued by difficulties and delays. Bosses are now racing to launch the new system amid pressure from the Gambling Commission. The complex update was supposed to be in place when Allwyn took over the running of the National Lottery from Camelot in February last year. However, this was delayed after the existing provider, International Games Technology (IGT), challenged the move in the High Court. The rollout has also been delayed by a separate legal challenge mounted by Richard Desmond, who is suing the Gambling Commission after missing out on the 10-year licence. He has argued the bidding process was unfair and is seeking £200m in damages. The delays have fuelled concerns that Allwyn will fall short of its ambitious pledge to funnel more money to good causes. The operator originally promised to increase its charitable donations from £17.9bn to £38bn over the course of the licence – equivalent to about £3.8bn a year. But it has now watered down these targets by pledging to double returns by the end of its licence, from £30m to £60m a week – or less than £3.2bn a year. The Telegraph revealed earlier this year that the National Lottery is already facing a £2bn shortfall toward its charitable donation target in its maiden year. This summer's outage, first reported by Better Retailing magazine, is also likely to spark concerns among shopkeepers who make commission by selling lottery tickets. Andrew Goodacre, the chief executive of the British Independent Retailers Association, said: 'My opinion is that anything that disrupts the normal running of a shop is not welcome. 'We also have to hope that the proposed works go to plan and that any switch is restricted to 36 hours – I fear this may overrun. I would also like to think that the retailers would receive some form of compensation for lost business or inconvenience.' A spokesman for Allwyn said: 'Allwyn is investing over £350m into improving the operations and technology of The National Lottery. 'This change is critical – it will give us the springboard from which we can continue to improve the player and retailer experience and enable us to deliver on our ambitious plans to double returns to good causes from £30m to £60m a week by the end of the licence.'
