UCLA's Mick Cronin hires former player David Singleton as an assistant coach
Singleton spent the last two years playing in the NBA G League with the Atlanta Hawks' affiliate in Georgia.
He helped UCLA reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2021. He also helped the Bruins make the tournament in 2022 and in 2023, when they made the Sweet 16. As a fifth-year senior, Singleton and the Bruins won the Pac-12 regular-season title.
Singleton set the school record for most games played with 164 while playing a fifth year allowed by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He ranks third on the career list for 3-pointers made with 219. He averaged 5.7 points and 1.8 rebounds during his career.
'He's always had his eye on becoming a coach, and we are thrilled that we can add him to our staff,' Cronin said in a statement Wednesday. 'He understands what it takes to get a team to perform at a high level.'
Singleton said he's grateful to return to his alma mater, where he graduated in 2023 with a sociology degree.
'I'm looking forward to adding to the legacy and program in any way that I can as an assistant coach," he said in a statement.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper will team up for the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament, after their previous partners withdrew Friday from the revamped event. Top-ranked men's player Jannik Sinner also needs a new partner if he wants to play in the event that will reward $1 million to the winning team, as Emma Navarro also has pulled out of the competition that begins Tuesday and will instead be playing next week in a tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. Pegula, Draper and Sinner were all allowed to find a new partner by Sunday's deadline and maintain a direct entry into the field of 16 teams if their combined singles ranking was high enough. Pegula, last year's U.S. Open women's runner-up, and Draper had a combined ranking of 9 as of the entry deadline. After the withdrawals and new pairings, Italians Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti also moved into the draw via direct entry through their combined rankings. There are 13 spots currently filled, including defending mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who were given one of the wild cards by the U.S. Tennis Association. They criticized the new format, a shortened, two-day event that will largely be filled by top singles players. The other teams that have qualified directly include: Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune, Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev, and Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev. The other wild cards that have been given have gone to Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, Olga Danilovic and Novak Djokovic, Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton, and Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka.

Wolfsburg routs 5th-tier team Hemelingen 9-0 in German Cup
BERLIN (AP) — Wolfsburg routed fifth-tier SV Hemelingen 9-0 in the first round of the German Cup on Saturday, when other Bundesliga teams also enjoyed big wins over lower-league opposition. Two-time champion Leipzig twice came from behind to beat fourth-tier SV Sandhausen 4-2 with new signings Ezechiel Banzuzi and Yan Diomande both scoring. Jaguars are taking a cautious approach with 2-way star Travis Hunter in preseason game at the Saints
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to be cautious with two-way star Travis Hunter in their preseason game at New Orleans on Sunday. Although coach Liam Coen said Saturday that starters would play against the Saints, the Jaguars declined to commit to getting Hunter on the field after he sustained an upper-body injury during a scrimmage Thursday. Hunter is expected to go through pregame warmups inside the Superdome before the team determines his playing status. The Heisman Trophy winner was held out of a walk-through Friday as a precaution. He was on the field for the hourlong session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely. Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. He also played both ways during a sloppy scrimmage five days later before crashing hard to the ground while defending a deep pass late. The scrimmage included 10 penalty flags, at least seven dropped passes, an interception and a few more balls that nearly got picked. It was the kind of performance that surely factored into Coen's decision to get his starters — including quarterback Trevor Lawrence — back on the field against the Saints. 'That's fatigue,' Coen said. 'That's lack of concentration when you're getting fatigued and tired. Every time we come out, they go hard.' Hunter was one of 10 players held out of practice this week because of injuries, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. ___
