PETALING JAYA : The Kuala Terengganu High Court has granted bail of RM40,000 with two sureties to a woman charged with murdering three Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun students in a road crash on Oct 9 last year.
Justice Hassan Abdul Ghani said he found the defence's argument that the collision was an unintentional road accident and that the accused, Norizan Ismail, 50, had also skidded into a drain, reasonable.
'In a plane crash, you wouldn't assume that the pilot flew the plane intending to kill people. Perhaps the same can be said of Norizan,' Bernama reported him as saying.
The court ordered Norizan to report to the Dungun police station once every two months, barred her from operating any vehicles, and ordered her husband or bailor to ensure that she has no access to any vehicle keys.
The court also said that she could only leave her home when accompanied by her husband. It said she must continue receiving hospital treatment and is prohibited from contacting or interfering with any witnesses until the trial concludes.
Deputy public prosecutor Khairuddin Idris proposed bail of RM30,000 with two sureties but urged the court to deny bail altogether, citing the potential risk of further offences.
In response to a query from the judge, defence counsel Shahir Jusoh said Norizan had a scheduled hospital appointment in Kuala Lumpur and was also undergoing alternative treatment.
On Oct 15 last year, Norizan was charged with three counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Akmal Tukirim, 25, Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20, and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20.
The court ordered Norizan to be sent to Permai Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial.
Norizan also faces a charge under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code at the Kuala Terengganu sessions court of attempted murder involving another UiTM student who sustained injuries in the same crash.

MACC nabs duo over graft involving land applications

Sabah MACC director S Karunanithy said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. KOTA KINABALU : The Sabah chapter of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today detained a civil servant and a government pensioner for alleged involvement in a RM66,000 graft case involving land applications. Bernama quoted sources as saying the two men, in their 50s and 60s, were detained at the Sabah MACC office after having their statements recorded this morning. The duo were suspected of having accepted bribes in connection with a case in 2016, even though they had no power to either approve land applications or conduct a census. 'An initial probe found that the first suspect had allegedly accepted a bribe of RM54,000, while the second person took RM12,000 from several people as an inducement to process their applications and conduct a land census under the state government,' the sources said. Sabah MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

3 M'sians nabbed in S'pore over evasion of cigarette duty, GST

The three men were arrested and Singapore customs officers seized two Malaysian-registered vehicles and the duty-unpaid cigarettes. SINGAPORE : Three Malaysian men have been arrested for suspected evasion of S$812,384 (about RM2.7 million) in cigarette duty and goods and services tax (GST) following an enforcement operation at Gul Drive. In a statement, Singapore customs said during the operation on June 10, its officers observed the three men, aged 24, 30, and 40, transferring brown boxes between two Malaysian-registered vehicles parked by the roadside. 'Officers moved in to conduct checks and found 7,400 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a prime mover attached to a trailer, and 100 cartons in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). 'The three men were arrested at the scene. Both vehicles and the duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized,' the agency said, adding that the two vehicles had entered Singapore separately. Singapore customs said the 30-year-old suspect had allegedly driven the prime mover from Malaysia, with the duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed among boxes of coffee products. The 24-year-old allegedly assisted with transferring the duty-unpaid cigarettes to the MPV, while the 40-year-old was allegedly tasked with delivering them to customers in Singapore. All suspects are believed to have been recruited by unidentified individuals in Malaysia. Court proceedings are ongoing. Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, possessing, or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act. Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years. Vehicles used in such offences are also subject to forfeiture.

Teacher found dead in home uncontactable since Sept, says exco

Lo Kwan Fong's decomposed body was found in her home last Thursday. PETALING JAYA : Lo Kwan Fong, the 39-year-old teacher whose decomposed body was found in her home in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, last Thursday, had been uncontactable since September, said state executive councillor Aznan Tamin. The state education and information committee chairman said the last time Lo had contacted her school was on Sept 26, 2024. 'The teacher could not be contacted via phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger or Telegram. 'The school principal also issued show-cause letters for her absence from duty on Nov 21 and Dec 19 last year. 'The teacher's phone number continued to be unreachable on March 12, causing the school to resort to various other ways to track her,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Yesterday, Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said Lo, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, was found dead after her neighbours alerted police to a foul smell coming from the house in Bandar Selesa Jaya last Thursday. He said Lo was believed to have died a month ago, and that the post-mortem could not determine the cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition. Aznan said the school attempted to track Lo via letters of inquiry to government agencies such as the road transport department, prisons department, immigration department and national registration department. On Dec 29, her neighbour told the school the teacher had not returned home for a long time, going by the many letters and mail stuffed into the windows and door of her house, while her car was parked on the roadside nearby. 'The deceased was an only child and lived alone after her parents died,' he said, adding that the teacher was believed to have grappled with personal problems like depression. Aznan said her body was still at Sultanah Aminah Hospital here as no next of kin had come forward to claim it.
