Caerphilly: Early release prisoner attacked man with scalpel
Shane Lever, aged 34, who has 102 offences to his name, split James Price's lip open with the weapon in the victim's own home just before last Christmas.
Newport Crown Court heard how the assault in the Trecenydd area of Caerphilly 'came out of nowhere'.
Nuhu Gobir, prosecuting, said the victim needed 20 stitches for the wound after he was taken by ambulance to the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran.
Mr Price lost consciousness following the attack which took place at around 6pm on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
Lever had gone to visit the victim who he had known for around 15 years.
The defendant had asked Mr Price for the drugs pregabalin and Valium as he was 'struggling with heroin' and needed help.
Mr Gobir told the court that the victim had congratulated Lever because he had just been released early from prison.
He had been freed from jail on December 5 after he was given a six-week custodial sentence for assaulting an emergency worker.
Lever, the prosecution said, had pushed Mr Price who pushed him back before the complainant was cut with the weapon.
'After he was arrested on December 13, he told the police that the victim had lunged at him and punched him in the face,' Mr Gobir said.
'The defendant then became visibly distressed when he was shown pictures of Mr Price's injuries during the interview.'
Lever, of no fixed abode, Caerphilly pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
Mr Gobir added: 'His previous convictions are littered with offences of violence – 18 in total.'
They include grievous bodily harm, attempted robbery, violent disorder and battery.
Ed Mitchard representing Lever said in mitigation: 'The defendant had a difficult background – his father was murdered when he was a child.
'His mother had three children and two of his siblings have passed away.'
Judge Eugene Egan jailed Lever for 45 months and made him the subject of a five-year restraining order not to contact Mr Price.
The defendant was ordered to pay a statutory victim surcharge following his release from custody.

When Justice was arrested, he replied: 'I will replace the door'. Ms Stevenson indicated that no value for the damage caused was made available to the court. Defence lawyer Aime Allan said Justice, of Mackie Place, Dunfermline, was struggling with his mental health at the time but is now on treatment and feeling better and has paid to fix the damage. Ms Allan said Justice and his mother are still talking but he is not allowed to enter the property and is staying with another family member. Dealer pedalled drugs from bra in Dundee city centre
A brazen drug dealer caught pushing street Valium in Dundee city centre has been jailed. Police CCTV captured Paula Bowman exchanging wraps of etizolam and cash on High Street and City Square on multiple occasions. Bowman – who has a lengthy criminal record – was given the chance to cooperate with social workers in a last-ditch attempt to avoid prison. However, the 53-year-old did not engage, with Dundee Sheriff Court hearing about the extent of her 'chaotic' lifestyle. A narrative of facts previously described Bowman's drug-dealing between September 2021 and July 2022. Footage in the first incident captured Bowman taking a wrap containing a white substance from her bra. A full search later revealed she was concealing 18 different wraps containing 327 white tablets. The narrative said of an incident just before 10am in June 2022: 'The on-duty CCTV operator observed the accused handing out several white tablets to numerous members of the public in exchange for money.' More than £1,700 in cash was recovered from Bowman, with the drugs recovered having a maximum value of £511. Bowman, of St Mary Street, previously pled guilty to drug-dealing and returned to court for sentencing after a social work report was prepared. 'The report makes extremely poor reading,' solicitor Anika Jethwa conceded. 'She's had long-standing drug problems, significant mental health issues and has struggled to deal with the death of her long-term partner. 'The difficulties this woman has are very much entrenched. 'The offences were committed in the city centre where she was hanging around with various like-minded people, involving herself in the supply of drugs. 'She's not going into town associating with these people any more.' Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith told Bowman, who repeatedly shook her head while being addressed: 'I was rather dismayed to find you did not really attend any of the appointments and the only times you did attend was because you were in crisis. 'It seemed to demonstrate quite eloquently you still living quite a chaotic lifestyle. 'You are just going to be a revolving door to custody. 'I appreciate you may have been concerning yourself in the supply of drugs as a means of funding your own addiction but you have still seen fit to bring misery to others in supplying drugs that have caused your life to spiral out of control.' She was jailed for a total of 491 days.
