Haliey Welch Gets the Last Laugh as SEC Drops All Crypto Charges
Haliey Welch, better known as the viral sensation behind the 'Hawk Tuah' meme, has officially escaped any legal consequences following an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) into her controversial cryptocurrency token, $HAWK.
TMZ first reported that the SEC has concluded its probe and will not be pursuing any charges or monetary sanctions against Welch. That means she walks away completely clean: no fines, no legal restrictions, and nothing stopping her from diving back into the crypto world if she wants to.
Her attorney, James Sallah, confirmed the news, stating:
'The SEC closed the investigation without making any findings against, or seeking any monetary sanctions from, Haliey. Because they did not bring any action against her, there are no restrictions on what she can do in regards to crypto or securities in the future.'
For someone who just months ago was at the center of a massive financial scandal, this is a wild turn of events.
Welch shot to internet fame after a clip of her saying 'Hawk Tuah' in an exaggerated Southern accent went viral. The phrase became a full-blown cultural phenomenon, turning Welch into a sought-after influencer overnight. Brands rushed to cash in on her moment, and soon, she found herself at the center of one of the biggest crypto launches of 2024.
The $HAWK token debuted in December and exploded in value almost instantly. Within days, its market capitalization soared to nearly $500 million. Early investors thought they had struck gold. Social media was ablaze with hype, and Welch was riding the high.
But then, just as quickly as it rose, the token collapsed. Its value plummeted, leaving thousands of investors with massive losses and sparking accusations of a pump-and-dump scheme. That's when the SEC stepped in, launching an investigation into whether Welch had played a role in manipulating the market.
For months, speculation swirled. Was Welch just a face for the project, or was she actively involved in a financial scheme? Crypto watchdogs dissected her social media posts, critics demanded accountability, and some investors even threatened legal action.
But through it all, Welch never wavered in her innocence. She maintained that she had no ill intent and that she had simply been caught up in the chaotic nature of the cryptocurrency market.
And now, with the SEC officially closing its investigation without any findings against her, Welch is completely in the clear.
Despite the controversy, Welch remains a social media force. Her following is still massive, and if anything, this scandal has only made her more infamous.
But will she dive back into crypto? That remains to be seen. While her lawyer insists that she is free to participate in securities and digital assets, Welch may be hesitant to step back into such a volatile space.
For now, she seems content to bask in the relief of dodging a major financial and legal nightmare. Whether she pivots to new business ventures, brand deals, or continues to ride the Hawk Tuah wave, one thing is certain: this won't be the last we hear of Haliey Welch.

Beloved UWS eatery Jacob's Pickles shuttered for roaches, rats, sewage
Upper West Side eatery Jacob's Pickles was abruptly shuttered this week following a slew of icky code violations. The Department of Health temporarily closed the Southern-style dining hotspot after the place showed evidence of rats and roaches. The restaurant was also cited for having an 'improper, inadequate, or unapproved' sewage disposal system. An inspection report revealed that the venue, located at 509 Amsterdam Ave. between 84th and 85th Streets, also allegedly failed to properly protect 'food, supplies, or equipment' from possible contamination sources. The shutdown took effect Wednesday with a statement from the restaurant claiming they'll be back open come Monday. 3 The Jacob's Pickles website said the restaurant was closed for renovations. Photo: Eilon Paz 'While unexpected, we're genuinely grateful this issue was brought to our attention,' the statement read. 'With the guidance of the health department, we uncovered underlying structural issues that contributed to unforeseen facility maintenance challenges. 'The safety of our guests and staff is always our top priority, and we will not reopen until every concern is resolved in full compliance with NYC Health Code standards,' the statement concluded. 3 Health inspectors shut the restaurant down Wednesday. JHVEPhoto – 3 Inspectors found evidence of rats living in the restaurant. Katsiaryna – The restaurant's website stated that Jacob's Pickles was closed for renovations and 'will open in a few days.' Jacob's Pickles has had a C rating with the Department of Health since December. Owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis said in May 2024 he would move the American restaurant to a new location at 688 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th Streets, after which he planned to open a new bar, Velvet Cowboy, inside the space Jacob's Pickles had occupied. It's unclear if Hadjigeorgis' plans have changed.

Steve Bannon Calls Musk ‘National Security Issue,' Says He 'May Be Here Illegally'
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon seized an opportunity to air his grievances with Elon Musk amid the SpaceX founder's blowup with President Donald Trump. In a Friday interview with NPR, Bannon was asked about prior comments that Trump should cancel all government contracts with Musk. The tech mogul's companies, which include Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI, have been given billions in federal dollars over the years, according to The New York Times. 'I think we have as a country a national security issue here,' Bannon said Friday, adding that Musk has a reportedly 'massive drug problem' and a 'deep financial and business relationship' with China. The MAGA podcaster continued, 'And we know he's asked for private briefings of top secret information.' The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Musk had requested a Pentagon briefing on plans for a potential war with China. Trump told reporters at the time that Musk would not see the plans, citing his business ties to China as a conflict of interest. The formerly Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, a team tasked with rooting out supposed fraud and waste within the federal government, has drawn scrutiny over its access to classified materials and the personal information of U.S. citizens. Bannon then doubled down on his call to investigate Musk's immigration status. 'You have someone whose legal status is in question,' he told NPR, adding that you 'can't deport people from all over the world' and 'leave a white South African, who may be here illegally, here.' Bannon, who pleaded guilty this year to scamming people who donated money towards building a wall at the U.S. Southern border, added, 'It's just not right.' The South African-born Musk is a naturalized U.S. citizen. Last year, The Washington Post reported that Musk was working illegally in the U.S. at the beginning of his career in the 1990s, though Musk denied the allegation. Bannon has never been Musk's biggest fan, previously calling him a 'parasitic illegal immigrant' and a 'truly evil guy.' Speaking to NPR on Friday, Bannon theorized about the root of Musk's falling out with Trump and added one more insult to the roster: an '11-year-old child.' 'He hasn't turned up any fraud,' Bannon said, criticizing Musk's efforts at DOGE. 'So there's been a lot of tension. And Elon Musk, like the 11-year-old child he is, didn't take it very well.' ANALYST CALLS GAMESTOP, STRATEGY VALUATION DISPARITY 'BAFFLING': On Thursday, Wedbush reiterated an Underperform rating on GameStop (GME) with a $13.50 price target after the company last week disclosed that it purchased 4,710 bitcoin, 'following the MicroStrategy playbook.' However, Strategy currently trades 1.75-times its bitcoin holdings, while GameStop trades at 2.4-times cash value, suggesting that investors value GameStop's entry into bitcoin at the same premium they assign to Strategy shares, but value GameStop's core operations at $8 per share, the analyst said. The firm added that while it is likely GameStop will convert more of its cash into bitcoin, the disparity in valuation between company and Strategy 'is baffling.' Both companies provide bitcoin investors the ability to use margin to invest in crypto, but GameStop's holdings 'are literally 1% as great as MSTR's,' according to Wedbush. The firm believes GameStop's entry into the trading card business has delivered 'modest success,' but it sees no potential for a rebound in the company's core business.
