The 25-year quest to find Miss Atomic Bomb ends. Here's what we know about this iconic ‘nuclear tourism' photograph
For 25 years, one question consumed retired scientist Robert Friedrichs: Who was the woman behind the most famous photograph in Las Vegas' history?
The mysterious showgirl captured in a 1957 promotional photograph became an enduring symbol of atomic-age America.
Posed in a mushroom cloud-shaped swimsuit with arms outstretched against the Nevada desert, she was known only by her stage name "Lee A.
Merlin'.
A city built on 'nuclear tourism'
The iconic photograph emerged from a unique moment in American history when the display of nuclear power captured public attention between 1951 and 1992.
Las Vegas sought to capitalise on the trend, and sent in a photographer in 1957 to shoot a promotional ad for 'nuclear tourism'.
Nuclear tourism refers to travel focused on atomic history, where visitors explore nuclear test sites, reactors, and related museums to experience and learn about the Atomic age.
The photographer shot the model in a fluffy, mushroom-shaped swimsuit, immitating a nuclear cloud, in high-heels and a smiling face, strectching her arms as the desert unfolded behind her.
It became one of the most requested photographs, shaping Las Vegas' identity as a city of fantasy and spectacle.

Yet little was known about the model in th photo.
The start of the quest
Friedrichs in 2000 started his quest for the lady when the Atomic Museum was preparing to open in Las Vegas. As a founding member, he hoped to locate Miss Atomic Bomb for the grand opening ceremony. What started as simple curiosity evolved into an all-consuming obsession.
His investigation filled stacks of binders with clues and potential leads. He tracked down the original photographer, Don English, and interviewed former showgirls who confirmed the stage name "Lee A.
Merlin." But the woman's true identity remained elusive, with leads drying up and months turning into years.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly last winter. After Friedrichs delivered a presentation about his search at the Atomic Museum, an audience member sent him an obituary the following day. One detail jumped out: the deceased woman had once been the lead dancer at the Sands Hotel.
Her name was Anna Lee Mahoney.
Who was Anna Lee Mahoney?
Born on August 14, 1927, in the Bronx, Mahoney was trained in ballet in New York before transitioning to stage performances under her professional name, 'Lee A. Merlin'. By 1957, she had become the lead dancer at the famous Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.
After retiring from dance, Mahoney reinvented herself as a mental health counselor, working in the field for 30 years. She later moved to Hawaii, married, and lived quietly until her death from cancer in 2001 in Santa Cruz, California.
More than just a photograph
The Miss Atomic Bomb photograph transcended its original promotional purpose to become a touchstone.
For Friedrichs, solving the mystery represented more than satisfying personal curiosity. "The missing name was a gap in the historical record, and I wanted to fix it," he explained, comparing it to knowing someone was the first US president but forgetting their name. "It's something I always hoped would be completed in my lifetime".
A temporary exhibit showcasing his decades-long investigation opens this June 13 at the Atomic Museum, celebrating both Anna Lee Mahoney's life and the determined historian who refused to let her story disappear into the atomic dust of history.

Honkai Star Rail 3.6 banners leaked, new characters, new Relics and more
Image via: HoYoverse With leaks spilling two brand new characters of 5-star caliber, reruns, and even relic updates, the hype around Honkai: Star Rail 3.6 is already brewing. This patch could very well be the greatest turning point in team-building strategy for those Trailblazers carefully hoarding their Stellar Jade. Two New Recruits, Two Very Different Roads Patch 3.6 welcomes Month of Evernight and Permansor Terrae, introducing new mechanics through summon-style abilities. Though their kits vary widely, they share a single common objective-to inject flexibility and innovation into team compositions. Evernight is the Phase 1 Frost Remembrance character. Her entire kit centers around a Memoria sprite called Eevee that boosts her damage and healing and offers crowd control protection. The Memoria stacking mechanic will please those players that enjoy layered DPS action since the stacks enable powerful finishers once fully charged. Evernight's damage amplification and ability to expose enemy weaknesses feel great for players who want a good balance of their own power and team synergy. HSR 3.6 IS ACTUALLY INSANE?! | FREE DAN HENG SP CONFIRMED & MORE EVERNIGHT DETAILS - HSR 3.6 LEAKS While Phase 2 welcomes Permansor Terrae, Preserver Cantankerous with a somewhat rare combination of buffs and shields, cane-rattle pushbroom super-strong shielding, and the rest stands apart. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Terrae's shields, unlike those from sustain characters, scale roughly with attack power, and his skills push allies forward via advancement of actions and damage amplification. His skill kit, moreover, allows follow-up attacks when buffed allies take their turns, thus making Terrae a fluid option for any team, be it defensively-strong or aggressively-focused. NEW UPDATE! CONFIRM 3.6 TO 4.2 BANNER ROADMAP! Evernight, Castorice, Cyrene - Honkai Star Rail To Cast and Anaxa Return While not yet officially confirmed, a leak indicated the possibility of reruns for Castorice (Quantum Remembrance) and Anaxa (Wind Erudition). For those that missed grabbing these versatile units the first time, 3.6 may finally be their second attempt. For months, ever since the launch, Trailblazers have pondered the age old question of whether to spend or save their resources. After monumentally delivering two summoner-oriented heavy hitters back to back in patch 3.6, it feels like the question is more pressing than ever. Evernight will razzle-dazzle Remembrance strategies while Terrae might just handily contest underwater with Adventurine as the next big Preservation pick. So if all goes down with the rerun, it might end up digging deeper into everyone's wallets and resources. NEW UPDATE! RERUN CHARACTER BANNER ROADMAP FOR 3.6-4.0 | Castorice, Cipher, Yunli - Honkai Star Rail Beyond Banners, Relics and Future Content New relic sets would be developed by the game to enhance the unique playstyle of these characters. While keeping details stashed away, relics that somewhat synergize with HP scaling Units of Ice or attack scaling Units of Preservation might make existing meta builds rarer. Final Thought: Honkai: Star Rail 3.6 isn't only about bringing flashy new faces into the game; it's about evolving how teams work. This patch is turning out to be one of the biggest yet, with Evernight's DPS mechanics and Terrae's shields gaining more presence. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. 'Coolie': Why Rajinikanth's film was given 'A' by CBFC? The answer to the mysterious question is here
Superstar Rajinikanth 's Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj , was released in theaters across the world on August 14 with a grand release. As fans turn theaters into festivals, many people on the internet have been asking why the film was given an 'A' certificate by the censor board. Discussions about this are rapidly progressing on social media. Censor Board's decision tied to story elements According to many, 'Coolie' does not have as many bloody and violent scenes as Lokesh Kanagaraj's previous films. However, the main reason is said to be the way the film's story moves, with frequent scenes of bodies being cremated. Fans are debating what prompted the censor board to issue an 'A' certificate. In fact, it is also being argued that the scenes were unavoidable because the film's story revolves around that aspect. Depiction of illegal activities raises concerns After this, another reason is mentioned, which is the depiction of illegal activities taking place at the government-controlled port, as per the Hindu Tamil. It is also believed that the fact that official institutions are shown to be in the hands of criminals and not functioning properly may have been a controversial aspect in the eyes of the censorship board. Thus, sources say that the film was given an 'A' certificate after assessing its overall situation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like All August Trades Earn Luxury Rewards Vantage Markets IN Register Undo Lokesh's clarification awaited, film breaks records In this situation, director Lokesh Kanagaraj is expected to give an interview soon regarding this matter.
