Kayla Thornton, Gabby Williams, Kiki Iriafen among WNBA All-Star Game reserves
Thornton has been in the league for nine years and finally is getting her chance to play in the exhibition game. She was selected in the expansion draft by Golden State last year from New York and has helped the expansion team get off to a good start.
'It would be such a reward for her,' said New York's Sandy Brondello, who will be one of the All-Star coaches. 'She's been a role player all her career, but to go into a new organization and do so well, I voted for her as an alternate to get there because she deserves it.'
Williams has been in the league for six seasons, although she's missed time to play with France's national team. She's having a strong season for Seattle this year.
Washington rookies Iriafen and Citron join Dallas' Paige Bueckers as first-year players on the All-Star team. Bueckers was chosen as a starter. It's the first time that three rookies will be playing in the game since 2011.
Other reserves chosen include Seattle's Skylar Diggins, Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas, Atlanta's Rhyne Howard, Indiana's Kelsey Mitchell, Los Angeles' Kelsey Plum, Minnesota' Courtney Williams, Las Vegas' Jackie Young and Chicago's Angel Reese.
'It means a lot to go with these other two,' said Diggins, who will be making her seventh All-Star appearance, of playing with teammates Nneka Ogwumike and Williams.
The reserves were selected by the WNBA's 13 head coaches, who each voted for three guards, five frontcourt players and four players at either position regardless of conference. The coaches were not able to vote for their own players.
Captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will draft their teams for the All-Star Game on July 19. First they'll chose from the eight other starters: Breanna Stewart, A'ja Wilson, Bueckers, Ogwumike, Allisha Gray, Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally and Aliyah Boston.
The All-Star teams will be revealed on Tuesday.
Some notable players left off the team were Washington's Brittney Sykes, Atlanta's Brionna Jones, New York's Natasha Cloud and Los Angeles' Dearica Hamby.
Connecticut was the only team without an All-Star selection.

Are these 4 Washington Commanders the team's Mt. Rushmore since 2000?
The Washington Commanders haven't been very good in the 21st century. You can blame former owner Daniel Snyder for much of that ineptitude. Fortunately, Snyder sold the team in July 2023 to a group led by Josh Harris. In only his second season as owner, Harris had the Commanders in the NFC championship game after a 12-5 regular season. It was the franchise's best season in 33 years. It helps, of course, to have a franchise quarterback. In the 2024 NFL draft, the Commanders found their guy, Jayden Daniels, who was terrific as a rookie, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Many already consider Daniels one of the NFL's top quarterbacks. However, before last season, Washington had only made the playoffs five times since 2001, with a record of 1-5. The only win came in 2005, so last season's success marked the end of a long period of ineptitude. That's not to say the franchise hasn't had great players over the last 25 years. Bleacher Report recently named the Mount Rushmore for all 32 NFL teams since 2000. Here's Washington's four picks: It's hard to dispute this list. It's way too early to include Daniels, who has only played one season. You could make serious arguments for current wide receiver, Terry McLaurin. Then, you could also make a strong case for Clinton Portis and Santana Moss. Chris Cooley was excellent, too, but probably falls a bit short compared to the rest of this list. Fletcher played the final seven seasons of his 16-year career with Washington. During that time, he earned four trips to the Pro Bowl, was a two-time second-team All-Pro and is a member of the Commanders' Ring of Fame. Fletcher should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Kerrigan played 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with Washington. During that time, he recorded 95.5 sacks and set the franchise record—an easy pick. Kerrigan is now in his fourth season on Washington's coaching staff. It's easy to forget that before Trent Williams, there was Chris Samuels. Samuels, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft, started for the Redskins at left tackle for 10 seasons before he was forced into retirement after the 2009 season due to spinal stenosis. Samuels made six Pro Bowls in his 10 NFL seasons. He missed only eight games in his first nine seasons before the injury cost him 11 games during his final season. Samuels is in Washington's Ring of Fame. Trent Williams was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. He immediately replaced Samuels as the franchise left tackle. During his 10 seasons in Washington, Williams was named to the Pro Bowl seven times. Since being traded to San Francisco in 2020, Williams has made the Pro Bowl four more times and earned first-team All-Pro on three occasions. What Penn State fans need to know about the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2025
A new college football season will soon arrive in Iowa City, Iowa and the big question will be whether or not the Iowa offense will have a new look that thrives more than in recent years. Iowa had some ups and downs as the Big Ten expanded, and the Hawkeyes had some close calls go the other way to prevent a more favorable postseason landing spot. But that has been par for the course for Iowa lately as the Hawkeyes continue to build a solid defense and running game. Will they have a passing game worth reckoning with in 2025? That may be the biggest question. Here's a look at the Hawkeyes entering the 2025 college football season. 2024 in review The theme of Iowa football in recent years has been playing with solid defense and wondering if the offense can do anything. It has been a struggle to get the Iowa offense to click at times. Iowa finished the 2025 season ranked second in the Big Ten in rushing offense but 17th in passing offense. Iowa had 10 touchdown passes and averaged just 20.0 passes per game, the lowest average among Big Ten programs. Kaleb Johnson led the Big Ten in rushing average with 128.08 yards per game and had a Big Ten-leading 21 games. He is now a Pittsburgh Steeler, so Iowa will look to replace his rushing production with Kamari Moulton and Jaziun Patterson. Iowa went 8-5 last season with a 27-24 loss in the Music City Bowl to the Missouri Tigers to close out the season. Iowa had a one-point loss to Iowa State and lost by a field goal to UCLA, but suffered double-digit setbacks against Ohio State and Michigan State. Some would say Iowa was just a few plays away from a 10 or 11-win season, but the Hawkeyes know what needs to improve to flip some of those close games in their favor. Head coach profile Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz returns for his 27th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes, remaining college football's longest tenured head coach. Ferentz will soon become the all-time leader in Big Ten coaching victories as he enters the 2025 season jus one conference win shy of the current record of 205 wins held by Woody Hayes of Ohio State (Penn State's Joe Paterno accumulated 162 wins in Big Ten play during his career, good for fifth on the Big Ten's all-time list). Top offensive player Iowa is home to one of the top offensive linemen in college football this season with offensive tackle Gennings Dunker. Dunker is being scouted as one of the best offensive tackles in the 2026 NFL draft pool and could be a potential first-round draft pick. Dunker was a second-team All-Big Ten player last season and will be a tough challenge for opposing defensive linemen to get around this fall. Top defensive player Defensive tackle Aaron Graves is back in 2025 after recording six sacks for the Hawkeyes last season. Graves was an honorable mention for All-Big Ten last fall and should be in the mix for more All-Big Ten honors this season. Graves would have been a decent draft pick in the NFL draft had he turned pro in 2025, so his return is a nice boost for the Iowa defensive line, which should be very good this season. 2025 schedule Iowa faces some challenges in the Big Ten schedule with three games against teams that were in the College Football Playoff last season, but they also get to play those games at home (against Indiana, Penn State, and Oregon). Penn State has had some tough matchups in Iowa over the years, but the Nittany Lions have owned the upper hand in the series in recent years. This road trip for Penn State is well worth monitoring for a potential upset alert. The Hawkeyes skip games against Ohio State and Michigan this season but will play on the road twice in November against USC and Nebraska. Iowa also plays its in-state rival from the Big 12 Iowa State on the road in Ames, Iowa this season. With a win total floating around 7.5, predicting which way Iowa's season may go seems risky without knowing if the offense will be rejuvenated at all.
