The role llamas might play in treating schizophrenia

Llamas – likely without red pajamas – may hold the key to treating schizophrenia.
The serious brain disorder causes people to interpret reality abnormally, and affects approximately 3.7 million U.S. adults between the ages of 18 to 65 years old, according to the nonprofit RTI International.
But the domesticated South American woolly animal might be be able to help. French researchers said this week that they had used llama antibodies, or proteins that help to protect the immune system, to design a tiny fragment of an antibody known as a 'nanobody' that will trigger a neurotransmitter in the brain involved in regulating neural activity.
Neurotransmitters are chemical molecules that carry messages or signals from one nerve cell to the next target cell, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
No llamas were harmed in the study and researchers can identify nanobodies in a petri dish. In the past, llama antibodies have also proven effective in fighting Covid and other 'SARS-like' viruses.
When scientists at the Institute of Functional Genomics injected the molecule into the veins or the muscles, it was able to break the blood-brain barrier and effectively reach brain receptors. The barrier is a a tightly locked layer of cells that defend your brain from harmful substances.
Studying the impact of the nanobodies in two tests using mice, the researchers found that they corrected cognitive deficits that were observed.
There was an improvement of cognitive function with just one shot, and a prolonged effect over one week.
Clinical studies are now required to show that their findings could be a new avenue of treatment for schizophrenia.
"In humans obviously we don't know [yet], but in mice yes, it is sufficient to treat most deficits of schizophrenia," molecular biologist Jean-Philippe Pin told Newsweek..
He was a co-author of the research which was published in the journal Nature.
Pin said that medications currently given to schizophrenia patients "treat the symptoms well, but less the cognitive deficits."
The cause of the chronic condition remains unknown, but the World Health Organization says it is thought that an interaction between genes and a range of environmental factors may be the reason. The exact prevalence of schizophrenia is difficult to measure. Some have tied cases in Canada to cannabis use.
Although schizophrenia can occur at any age, people are typically diagnosed between the ages of 16 and 30. Symptoms vary from person to person.
There is no cure, but it can be treated through antipsychotic medications, talk therapy, and self-management strategies, the National Alliance on Mental Illness says.
The study's authors hope to add this strategy to the list.
'This research confirms the potential of nanobodies as a new therapeutic strategy for acting on the brain, with their use eventually being broadened to include the treatment of other neurological illnesses,' the institute said in a statement.

A comprehensive new analysis of the bite forces of 18 species of dinosaurs has revealed that, despite their size, several of the giant prehistoric predators packed much weaker bites than previously thought. Researchers, including from the University of Bristol, found that while dinosaurs like the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex were optimised for quick, strong bites, much like a crocodile, many others that walked on two legs, such as the spinosaurus and allosaurs, had much weaker bite forces and instead specialised in slashing and ripping flesh. The research, published in the journal Current Biology, revealed that meat-eating dinosaurs followed different evolutionary paths in terms of skull design and feeding style despite their similarly gigantic sizes. 'Tyrannosaurs evolved skulls built for strength and crushing bites while other lineages had comparatively weaker but more specialized skulls, suggesting a diversity of feeding strategies even at massive sizes,' Andrew Rowe, one author of the study from the University of Bristol, said. 'In other words, there wasn't one 'best' skull design for being a predatory giant; several designs functioned perfectly well.' In the study, scientists probed how walking on two legs influenced skull mechanics and feeding techniques in dinosaurs. Previous research showed that despite reaching similar sizes, predatory dinosaurs evolved in very different parts of the world at various times and conditions and had different skull shapes. This raised doubts on whether the skulls of these dinosaurs were functionally similar under the surface or if there were notable differences in their predatory lifestyles. 'Carnivorous dinosaurs took very different paths as they evolved into giants in terms of feeding biomechanics and possible behaviors,' Dr Rowe said. To understand the relationship between body size and skull biomechanics, researchers used 3D X-ray scanning technology to analyse the skull mechanics and quantify the feeding performance and the bite strength across 18 species of two-legged carnivorous dinosaurs ranging from small ones to giants. Researchers were surprised to find clear divergence among the species. For instance, skull stress didn't show a pattern of increase with size. Some smaller dinosaurs even experienced greater stress than the larger species due to increased muscle volume and bite force. 'Tyrannosaurids like T rex had skulls that were optimised for high bite forces at the cost of higher skull stress,' Dr Rowe noted. 'But in some other giants like Giganotosaurus, we calculated stress patterns suggesting a relatively lighter bite. It drove home how evolution can produce multiple 'solutions' to life as a large, carnivorous biped.' Overall, being a predatory two-legged dinosaur did not always equate to being a bone-crushing giant like T rex. Unlike T rex, some dinosaurs like spinosaurus and allosaurs became giants while maintaining weaker bites more suited to slashing at prey and stripping flesh. 'Large tyrannosaur skulls were instead optimised like modern crocodiles with high bite forces that crushed prey,' Dr Rowe explained. 'I tend to compare Allosaurus to a modern Komodo dragon in terms of feeding style.' 'This biomechanical diversity suggests that dinosaur ecosystems supported a wider range of giant carnivore ecologies than we often assume,' he added.

Tennessee is gearing up for an execution on Tuesday that experts say would likely mark the first time a man has been put to death with a working defibrillator in his chest. Gov. Bill Lee declined Monday to grant a reprieve, clearing the way for Byron Black's execution after a legal battle and ongoing uncertainty about whether the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator will shock his heart when the lethal drug takes effect. The nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center said it's unaware of any other cases in which a person on death row made similar claims to Black 's about defibrillators or pacemakers. Black's attorneys said they haven't found a comparable case, either. Lee said the courts have "universally determined that it is lawful to carry out the jury's sentence of execution given to Mr. Black for the heinous murders of Angela Clay and her daughters Lakeisha, age 6, and Latoya, age 9." The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected Black's appeals. The execution would be Tennessee's second since May, after a pause for five years, first because of COVID-19 and then because of missteps by state corrections officials. Twenty-seven men have died by court-ordered execution so far this year in the U.S., and nine other people are scheduled to be put to death in seven states during the remainder of 2025. The number of executions this year exceeds the 25 carried out last year and in 2018. It is the highest total since 2015, when 28 people were put to death. Black's condition Black, 69, is in a wheelchair, and he has dementia, brain damage, kidney failure, congestive heart failure and other conditions, his attorneys have said. The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator he has is a small, battery-powered electronic device that is surgically implanted in the chest. It serves as a pacemaker and an emergency defibrillator. Black's attorneys say in order to be sure it's off, a doctor must place a programming device over the implant site, sending it a deactivation command, with no surgery required. In mid-July, a trial court judge agreed with Black's attorneys that officials must have his device deactivated to avert the risk that it could cause unnecessary pain and prolong the execution. But the state Supreme Court intervened July 31 to overturn that decision, saying the other judge lacked the authority to order the change. The state has disputed that the lethal injection would cause Black's defibrillator to shock him. Even if shocks were triggered, Black wouldn't feel them, the state said. Black's attorneys have countered that even if the lethal drug being used, pentobarbital, renders someone unresponsive, they aren't necessarily unaware or unable to feel pain. Kelley Henry, Black's attorney, said the execution could become a 'grotesque spectacle.' The legal case also spurred a reminder that most medical professionals consider participation in executions a violation of health care ethics. Black's case Black was convicted in the 1988 shooting deaths of his girlfriend Angela Clay, 29, and her two daughters. Prosecutors said he was in a jealous rage when he shot the three at their home. At the time, Black was on work-release while serving time for shooting Clay's estranged husband. Linette Bell, whose sister and two nieces were killed, recently told WKRN-TV: 'He didn't have mercy on them, so why should we have mercy on him?' Intellectual disability claim In recent years, Black's legal team has unsuccessfully tried to get a new hearing over whether he is intellectually disabled and ineligible for the death penalty under U.S. Supreme Court precedent. His attorneys have said that if they had delayed a prior attempt to seek his intellectual disability claim, he would have been spared under a 2021 state law. Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk contended in 2022 that Black is intellectually disabled and deserved a hearing under that 2021 law, but the judge denied it. That is because the 2021 law denies a hearing to people on death row who have already filed a similar request and a court has ruled on it 'on the merits." In Funk's attempt, he focused on input from an expert for the state in 2004 who determined back then that Black didn't meet the criteria for what was then called "mental retardation.' But she concluded that Black met the new law's criteria for a diagnosis of intellectual disability. Black also sought a determination by the courts that he is incompetent to be executed.
