ITC lines up Rs 20K-cr investments

Kolkata: Diversified conglomerate ITC Ltd will invest Rs20,000 crore in the medium term to expand its manufacturing footprint across sectors, Chairman SanjivPuri said on at the AGM, he said the company has already set up eight new manufacturing facilities in recent years as part of its growth strategy. Puri said the company will prioritise its 'Bharat First' strategy—focusing on deepening its domestic presence—before making a significant overseas impact. He added that new brand launches are aimed at driving value per cent of the company's revenue is from non-cigarette business, Puri said. Purifurther said the company will continue to evaluate strategic options for its businesses, including ITC Infotech, based on competitive context, business maturity, opportunities and overall value creation, without specifying any immediate plans for a demerger similar to the hotels vertical. Referring to studies by leading consulting firms in 2002, 2006, and 2017, Puri said these reports observed that conglomerates delivered superior shareholder returns in about 50 per cent of cases. 'Value creation is not a function of diversification, but of how that diversity is managed. With distributed leadership, strong governance and institutional synergies, ITC has turned this into a strength,' he said. Responding to a query on the possibility of spinning off ITC Infotech as a separate listed entity at the AGM, Puri said: 'We look at the business strategy, the competitive context, maturity of the business, and weigh the pros and cons of the current structure. Whatever is best, we recommend for shareholders' approval.' He stressed that ITC's structure is aligned with its strategic objectives, and decisions such as the demerger of ITC Hotels follow extensive reviews. 'Just like we did for hotels, whatever is right will be done at the right time. Nothing is cast in stone,'Puri asserted.

No immediate plans for ITC Infotech's demerger, says Puri

1 2 3 Kolkata: There is no clear plan for the demerger of ITC Infotech at present, Sanjiv Puri, chairman and MD of the conglomerate, said on Friday at ITC's first AGM following the demerger of the hotels business. However, nothing is cast in stone, Puri added. Replying to shareholders at ITC's 114th AGM, Puri said the company was planning to invest Rs 20,000 crore across various segments in the medium term. Speaking on the future plans for ITC Infotech, he said it "continued to make progress". "Demerger depends on the business strategy of an organisation. We look at the pros and cons of the current structure; whatever is best, we would go for shareholders' approval," he said. The ITC chairman said there has always been a debate about whether a conglomerate structure gives better returns to stakeholders or a standalone structure. A recent study revealed that in 50% of cases, a conglomerate structure gave better value, he added. ITC shares performed well in the last 2-3 years compared to the benchmark, he said. Puri said in the medium term, the conglomerate would invest Rs 20,000 crore, while it invested Rs 4,500 crore across categories in the last two years. "We are indeed navigating a critical TURN, a pivotal inflection point shaped by Turbulence, Uncertainty and Rapid change that calls for Novel strategies, innovation and solutions to reimagine the future. This underscores the imperative to redefine growth and competitiveness, build resilience and adopt a new paradigm of compassionate capitalism," he said. Puri also stressed the need for creating a future-ready portfolio and the need to build anti-fragile supply chains. Elaborating on the components of ITC Next, Puri added that a new vector of growth envisioned in the ITC Next strategy was the company's food-tech business. "A delectable range of cuisines is today being offered under four brands: 'ITC Master Chef Creations', 'ITC Aashirvaad Soul Creations', 'ITC Sunfeast Baked Creations' and 'Sansho by ITC Master Chef'. This business registered a CAGR of 108% in the three years since inception, setting new benchmarks in culinary innovation and tech-enabled operations, gaining an increasing consumer franchise. The full-stack food-tech platform has already scaled up to 60 cloud kitchens across five cities and is now being progressively introduced across India," he said.
