Woman linked to Gqeberha newborn kidnappings appears in court
The woman faces two counts of kidnapping and is expected back in court on 30 May.
One of the two women arrested in connection to the abduction of two newborn babies from a Gqeberha hospital appeared in court on Friday.
Sinovuyo Rabula, 26, appeared in the New Brighton Magistrates' Court following her arrest on Tuesday and faces two counts of kidnapping.
She is due to appear in court again on 30 May 2025 for a formal bail application.
Woman faked sickness and accessed maternity ward
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Eastern Cape Luxolo Tyali said the woman entered Dora Nginza Hospital under false pretences of experiencing abdominal pain on 20 May.
The premature baby boys – one four days old and the other two days old at the time – were being treated in the public hospital's neonatal ward.
'[She] accessed the maternity ward without authorisation, and removed the infants while posing as a new mother,' Tyali said.
Searched launched after mothers discover their babies missing
A frantic search to find the missing babies was launched by the Gqeberha police's Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and health authorities.
This after the mother of one of the infants discovered her baby was missing when she went to the maternity ward's premature unit with the intention of breastfeeding him at 8.30pm.

She had last seen her son at around 7pm when she left him after a feed.
A second mother later arrived at the ward and discovered that her baby son was also missing.
Women captured on hospital CCTV cameras
When questioned about the incident on Tuesday morning, Eastern Cape health department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said a security guard stationed in the maternity building tried to stop two women who were attempting to access the ward carrying a bag.
'The ladies were assumed to be breastfeeding. However, one of them managed to evade the security guard and gain access to the nursery carrying the same bag.'
Kupelo added that CCTV footage showed one of the women later using a different door to exit with the bag.
Suspects arrested
South African Police Service spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg said at the time that one of the police officers noticed two women carrying infants while he was exiting the premises.
'He immediately approached them and started questioning the women,' Janse van Rensburg said.
'The suspicion of the member was positive after the infants were identified as the two stolen babies.'
Rabula and her 25-year-old alleged accomplice were then arrested.

Sangoma implicated in toddler's murder makes U-turn on bail
The sangoma who was arrested in connection with the premeditated murder of two-year-old Kutlwano Shalaba has made an about-turn and wants to apply for bail. Sebokoana Khoanyana, 50, made a brief appearance on Thursday and his matter was postponed to June 25 for a formal bail application. Khoanyana appeared alongside Kutlwano's mother, Keneiwe Shalaba, 33, who is accused of lying about her son's disappearance in November 2024. Shalaba is also facing charges of premeditated murder. Khoanyana had initially requested that an attorney be made available so that he could plead guilty but was advised by the court that it was not the right time to plead. His lawyer, Gladmore Nyamande, said his client had a previous conviction of assault in 2019, which he believes was withdrawn. He was also convicted of possession of dagga but got a suspended sentence. Speaking to reporters shortly after the matter was postponed, Nyamande said: 'On his first appearance, he was not aware of his legal rights when he told the court that he wanted to plead guilty. 'According to his rights, the first thing he needs to do is to apply for bail and this matter will go further than the magistrate's court. We are not at the stage [of the trial] for him to plead guilty. He is flip-flopping; we don't know. When we come back, he might say he wants to abandon bail. 'On the day [of his first appearance] he just thought that by appearing and saying he wanted to plead, then the whole matter would be finished,' he said. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the investigation revealed that on November 10 2024, Shalaba took the child to the sangoma and requested him to kill her child because she was not happy with the gender of the baby and was tired of hiding it from her family that the child was a girl. 'The mother then allegedly fed the baby poison and after the baby died, it is alleged that the two took the child and buried her in a shallow grave in Waterpan.' Shalaba was denied bail in February. She told police that Kutlwano was strapped to her back when he was snatched from her. However, she was arrested a few days later.

2 suspects arrested in connection with murder of IFP deputy chief whip
2 suspects arrested in connection with murder of IFP deputy chief whip Police have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of IFP Deputy Chief Whip Khethamabala Sithole and have arrested two suspects. The Witness reports that a task team established to probe Sithole's death made the arrests this week. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo says the two suspects have been charged with two counts of attempted murder, following the incident which took place at Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong last Saturday. 'The team brought in three people for questioning. Two of them, aged 30 and 32, were linked to the incident, while the third person was released. More arrests are expected as the investigation continues. 'The suspects will be appearing [in] the Palmridge Magistrate's Court today,' Masondo says. Masondo says Sithole was killed by the suspects on Saturday evening in Katlehong, Gauteng. 'It was reported that unknown men opened fire on the group of people gathered for a meeting. Sithole was declared dead on the scene while two more people were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries.' Provincial secretary Alco Ngobese was also injured in the shooting and is receiving treatment. IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa described Sithole as 'a hard-working servant leader of the people and our country'. Sithole joined the IFP in his youth and served in various party structures, including as IFP Gauteng provincial chairperson. The EFF in Gauteng said, earlier in the week, the death may have been politically motivated and slammed political intolerance. 'Political killings are unacceptable and undermine our democracy. We therefore condemn all acts of political violence and urge all parties to show maximum tolerance and respect for opposing views. Democracy must be built on peace, not violence.' The Good Party also shared its condolences. 'Violence has no place in our democracy. May his soul rest in peace.' The ANC also paid tribute to Sithole on Sunday. 'We condemn this brutal act and call for urgent intervention by law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice,' the ANC said. Update: More details emerge on fatal shooting near White River Rugby Club
The White River community in Mpumalanga is reeling after a tragic shooting outside White River Rugby Club in the early hours this morning. Lowvelder reports that police are continuing their investigation into the shooting, which resulted in the death of Pieter Burger (21) and left two others, Arno van Niekerk and Marco Schalekamp, critically injured. According to multiple trusted sources, the incident reportedly stemmed from an altercation between Van Niekerk and Schalekamp, prompting Burger to intervene. The situation escalated near the main road (Danie Joubert), where gunfire erupted. While the exact circumstances remain unclear as there are various versions of what transpired, Lowvelder is in the process of gathering the facts. Emergency responders of ER24 and Emer-G-Med attended the scene. ER24 paramedic Kim Habib confirmed that Burger was declared dead on arrival, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. ER24 transported Van Niekerk to Rob Ferreira Hospital, stabilising him on scene and en route. He sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen, chest, back, left shoulder and the left side of his head. Emer-G-Med's Martin Jeffrey confirmed that Schalekamp was also transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital in a critical condition. He suffered gunshot wounds to both cheeks, with the bullet entering one side and exiting the other, impacting his cheekbone, as well as injuries to his shoulders and neck. He was later transferred to Mediclinic Nelspruit for further treatment. The first responder, Willem Burger of ACS Spartan, described finding Van Niekerk injured near a utility vehicle. According to Jeffrey, Schalekamp was seated in his vehicle, bleeding heavily. ACS Spartan's John Meintjes reported that his young son and dog were inside the vehicle but were unharmed. A family friend later arrived to take the child and pet to safety. Meintjes also described an intense moment when Burger's father arrived at the scene, visibly distraught. Authorities have recovered firearms and several spent cartridges, which will form part of the investigation. Tributes for Burger are already pouring in, with the White River Rugby Club describing him as 'a true dynamite, a warrior through and through'. The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of 'one of their own' and extended condolences to his family and loved ones. In honour of his memory, a gathering has been planned at the White River Rugby Club tonight at 17:30, where friends, family and members of the community will come together to celebrate Burger's life. Lowvelder attempted to reach out to Burger's family but was unable to make contact. Investigations remain ongoing, and the police urge anyone with information to come forward.
