Robert Pattison Sci-fi ‘Mickey 17' Opens in 1st Place, but Profitability is a Long Way Off

Asharq Al-Awsat09-03-2025
'Parasite' filmmaker Bong Joon Ho's original science fiction film 'Mickey 17' opened in first place on the North American box office charts. According to studio estimates Sunday, the Robert Pattinson-led film earned $19.1 million in its first weekend in theaters, which was enough to dethrone 'Captain America: Brave New World' after a three-week reign.
Overseas, 'Mickey 17' has already made $34.2 million, bringing its worldwide total to $53.3 million. But profitability for the film is a long way off: It cost a reported $118 million to produce, which does not account for millions spent on marketing and promotion.
A week following the Oscars, where 'Anora' filmmaker Sean Baker made an impassioned speech about the importance of the theatrical experience – for filmmakers to keep making movies for the big screens, for distributors to focus on theatrical releases and for audiences to keep going – 'Mickey 17' is perhaps the perfect representation of this moment in the business, or at least an interesting case study. It's an original film from an Oscar-winning director led by a big star that was afforded a blockbuster budget and given a robust theatrical release by Warner Bros., one of the few major studios remaining. But despite all of that, and reviews that were mostly positive (79% on RottenTomatoes), audiences did not treat it as an event movie, and it may ultimately struggle to break even.
Originally set for release in March 2024, Bong Joon Ho's follow-up to the Oscar-winning 'Parasite' faced several delays, which he has attributed to extenuating circumstances around the Hollywood strikes. Based on the novel 'Mickey7' by Edward Ashton, Pattinson plays an expendable employee who dies on missions and is re-printed time and time again. Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo also star.
It opened in 3,807 locations domestically where it performed best in New York and Los Angeles. Premium large format showings, including IMAX screens, also accounted for nearly half of its opening weekend. Internationally, it did especially well in Korea, where it made an estimated $14.6 million.
Second place went to 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which added $8.5 million from 3,480 locations in North America and $9.2 million internationally. Its global total currently rests at $370.8 million. The Walt Disney Studios is on track to become the first studio to cross $1 billion in 2025 sometime this week.
Holdovers 'Last Breath,' 'The Monkey' and 'Paddington in Peru' rounded out the top five. The weekend also had several other newcomers in 'In the Lost Lands,' a fantasy film from Paul W.S. Anderson starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista, and Angel Studios' 'Rule Breakers,' about Afghani girls on a robotics team.
Neon upped the theater count for 'Anora' to nearly 2,000 screens after it won five Oscars on Sunday, including best picture, best director and best actress. It earned an estimated $1.9 million (up 595% from last weekend), bringing its total grosses to $18.4 million.
According to data from Comscore, the 2025 box office as a whole is up 1% from where it was last year on this weekend and down 34.2% from the last pre-pandemic box office year of 2019.

Saudi Film Commission invites nominations for maiden Oscar entry

RIYADH: The Saudi Film Commission has invited local filmmakers to submit their work for a historic first Oscar entry. For the first time the commission has opened submissions for filmmakers to put forward their works for consideration as Saudi Arabia's official entry to the 98th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film Award category. The process was previously handled through direct nominations by the commission based on its own criteria. On Sunday, the commission announced the rules and selection process for the Kingdom's submission. They include details on the formation of the nomination committee, film eligibility requirements, and submission procedures, in a move aimed at enhancing the global presence of Saudi cinema and supporting the Kingdom's position in the international film industry. The first theatrical release of the film in Saudi Arabia must have taken place between Oct. 1, 2024 to Sept. 30, 2025, with a qualifying commercial run of at least a week. The newly formed nomination committee comprises independent film professionals and experts, operating under academy rules to ensure transparency, fairness, and impartiality in the evaluation process. The committee will review and discuss eligible applications before voting. Notably, as part of its efforts to empower Saudi filmmakers and connect them with the global film landscape, the Film Commission is participating in the Locarno Film Festival to cement its presence in European and global markets. The Locarno Film Festival, taking place from Aug. 6 to 16, 2025 is an annual international film festival held in Locarno, Switzerland, since 1946, and is known for showcasing experimental and arthouse cinema, as well as debut works by emerging directors.

Comic-con goes interstellar with 'Project Hail Mary,' 'Star trek' updates

Comic-Con is headed to space for its third day. Saturday's biggest presentations at the pop culture extravaganza will be for Project Hail Mary, which stars Ryan Gosling on an interstellar mission to save humanity, and for the next series in the Star Trek franchise. Fans are also getting a sneak peek at Coyote vs. ACME, a hybrid live-action and animated project that was shelved by Warner Bros. in a cost-cutting move but will get a theatrical release in 2026. The movie features John Cena, who is also a star of the DC series Peacemaker, which will have a presentation Saturday in Comic-Con's massive Hall H. Project Hail Mary is an adaptation of the book by Martin Weir, whose book The Martian was adapted by Ridley Scott in 2015. An estimated 135,000 people – many in costumes – are expected to attend Comic-Con 2025, which runs through Sunday in downtown San Diego. So far, fans have gotten previews of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the upcoming FX series Alien: Earth, and Predator: Badlands, which will be in theaters in November. Coyote vs. Acme, coming to theaters in August 2026, Wile E. Coyote is getting his day in court – and theaters. The stars of Coyote vs. Acme delivered a rousing presentation of a movie that at one point wasn't going to be released. The underdog story – both of the movie and Coyote – was a running theme of the panel. But rather than direct ire at Warner Bros., the real-world studio that shelved the project, the panel focused on the fictional Acme Corp. 'This is purely an Acme decision… and I am saying this for legal purposes,' moderator Paul Scheer said at the start of the panel. The movie is a hybrid of animation and live action and is based on a 1990 New Yorker article that satirized a legal complaint filed by Coyote against Acme, the maker of the TNT detonators, rocket shoes, catapults, and other products that consistently backfire during the Coyote's fruitless attempts to catch the Roadrunner. Laughter filled Hall H, the massive 6,000-seat venue, as fans watched a montage of Coyote being blown up, flattened, and falling into chasms in a scene set to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. Coyote is replaying the moments in his lair when an ad for a personal injury lawyer appears on TV. They also played six minutes of the movie, including a scene of opening statements in the case in which Coyote's lawyer, Will Forte, accidentally unleashes a rocket skate into the courtroom, setting Coyote and the judge's robes on fire. John Cena plays a slick Acme lawyer who wins over the jury, which includes a cartoon character, quickly. Forte said he didn't think the movie would ever get to audiences. 'I'm pretty speechless. You think back to the journey that this movie has taken. I had kind of given up hope at a certain point,' Forte said. At one point, his comments were interrupted by a man playing an Acme lawyer who stormed into Hall H with cease-and-desist letters. Director Dave Green said the movie conforms to famed animator Chuck Jones' rules for the struggle between the Coyote and Roadrunner, which include the bird always staying on the road and the Coyote being ultimately more humiliated than hurt when he falls, is crushed, or gets blown up by TNT. The movie, which features cameos from numerous Looney Tunes characters like Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, and Bugs Bunny, will be released on Aug. 28, 2026. Ketchup Entertainment teamed up with Warner Bros. on the film and in the release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.

Republicans Push to Rename DC Opera House After Melania Trump

Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday proposed renaming the opera house at Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after First Lady Melania Trump. The Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted to advance this proposal while debating the 2026 budget. Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson introduced an amendment to designate the venue as the 'First Lady Melania Trump Opera House,' stating that this change would be an 'excellent way to recognize her support and commitment to promoting the arts.' Trump's Influence on the Kennedy Center This proposal represents the latest effort by President Donald Trump to assert control over the Kennedy Center. Earlier this year, he fired board members and appointed himself chairman. Additionally, he replaced the longtime president with ally Richard Grenell, following his criticism to the institution for being too 'woke' and appointed several close associates, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, as trustees. In June, Trump attended an opening night performance of the hit musical 'Les Miserables,' where he received both cheers and boos from the audience. Efforts to Cement Trump's Legacy Republicans have actively sought to honor Trump and solidify his legacy during his second term, as they have introduced various proposals, including renaming Dulles International Airport after him. Other efforts include replacing Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill, carving Trump's likeness into Mount Rushmore, and establishing a national holiday in his name. Additionally, they have suggested rebranding Washington's Metro train service as the 'Trump Train.' The proposed name change for the Kennedy Center's opera house is part of a larger legislative package that primarily focuses on funding for the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency for 2026. However, the 2,364-seat theater, the second-largest in the Kennedy Center complex, will only receive its new designation if both chambers of Congress approve the change. Currently, Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, but spending bills require 60 votes to pass, which means that Democrats may have the opportunity to remove the name change from the final legislation before any vote occurs.
