HC adjourns hearing in plea for CBI probe into Exalogic affairs

Time of India5 hours ago

Kochi: High court on Tuesday adjourned to July 2 the hearing of the PIL seeking a CBI probe into the alleged financial transactions between CMRL and Exalogic Solutions, a defunct company owned by T Veena, daughter of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
While considering the petition, the bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji noted that notice had not been served to some of the respondents in the PIL, including the interim settlement board of the Income Tax department in New Delhi. The court directed the petitioner, senior journalist M R Ajayan, to take necessary steps regarding these respondents and adjourned the matter.
Ajayan, in his petition, alleged that Exalogic Solutions received Rs 1.72 crore from CMRL as illegal gratification.
He also sought an investigation into the alleged political nexus involving the chief minister and the companies concerned.
Meanwhile, the chief minister and his daughter filed counter-affidavits in the PIL, denying all allegations against them. They contended that the petition lacks specific details or verifiable evidence, rendering it legally unsustainable and indicative of a fishing and roving enquiry.

Chennai Metrowater to launch online booking for larger capacity tankers

Chennai Metrowater will soon roll out an online booking facility to opt for larger capacity water tankers on a paid basis. This service is being launched for the first time, targeting the water needs of residents in high-rise buildings, especially in the merged areas. The water agency has hired about 450 vehicles of various capacities to operate between 3,500-3,800 trips daily both for street supply and on payment. Of this, nearly 1,500 accounts for trips booked through 'Dial for water' service. In a few days, the water agency would add 12 kilo litre and 16 kl capacity vehicles to its fleet to cater to the growing demand for bulk water supply. Officials of the Metrowater said the decision to hire 80 lorries of larger capacity was taken based on the survey about the water demand in merged areas that are waiting to be covered with piped water supply network. Some of the areas identified with demand for tanker supply fall under zones 4, 9, 11, 14 and 15. Rathnaraj, Sholinganallur Phase II TNHB 1,500 MSB Flat Owners Welfare Association, said many large apartment complexes that lack piped water supply relied on either on Metrowater or private tanker supply. 'We often purchase water whenever supply from Nemmeli desalination plant drops. The availability of larger capacity vehicles will ensure better quality water at an affordable cost for apartments,' he said. The water agency would replace the present fleet of 16 kl capacity lorries with 18 kl tankers to distribute water to hospitals and partly commercial buildings. This would reduce the number of trips and ensure additional volume of water in a single trip for bulk consumers, said officials. While Rs.697 has been fixed as rate to be paid to contractors per 12 kl lorry trip, Rs.820 would be paid to lorry owners for operating one 18 kl tanker trip. The rate to be offered to consumers is being finalised. secretary, Chennai Metrowater Tanker Lorry Contractors Association, said the work order has been renewed for three years. The city would have only 2024-model water tankers plying on the roads in a few days.

Arrested naib tehsildar in Punjab's Hoshiarpur earned Rs 3.6cr over 9 years, but spent Rs 11.2cr

1 2 Jalandhar: The vigilance bureau on Tuesday claimed to have arrested naib tehsildar Varinderpal Singh Dhoot, a resident of Dhoot Kalan in Hoshiarpur, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. A vigilance bureau spokesperson said the arrest followed an inquiry conducted by the probe agency's Jalandhar range into the allegations of Dhoot accumulating wealth beyond his legitimate earnings – in his own name and through family members. The spokesperson further said the probe covered the period from Jan 1, 2009, to Dec 31, 2018. Investigations revealed that Dhoot's total income from known sources during this period was over Rs 3.58 crore. However, his total expenditure and assets acquired amounted to Rs 11.18 crore, which is 211.54% more than his lawful income. This substantial disparity established that Dhoot, while serving as a public servant, acquired immovable and moveable assets and spent funds far exceeding his legitimate earnings, thereby violating anti-corruption laws, informed the spokesperson. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Dhoot at vigilance bureau police station, Jalandhar Range, the spokesperson added.
