Chennai Metrowater to launch online booking for larger capacity tankers

The Hindu5 hours ago

Chennai Metrowater will soon roll out an online booking facility to opt for larger capacity water tankers on a paid basis. This service is being launched for the first time, targeting the water needs of residents in high-rise buildings, especially in the merged areas.
The water agency has hired about 450 vehicles of various capacities to operate between 3,500-3,800 trips daily both for street supply and on payment. Of this, nearly 1,500 accounts for trips booked through 'Dial for water' service.
In a few days, the water agency would add 12 kilo litre and 16 kl capacity vehicles to its fleet to cater to the growing demand for bulk water supply.
Officials of the Metrowater said the decision to hire 80 lorries of larger capacity was taken based on the survey about the water demand in merged areas that are waiting to be covered with piped water supply network.
Some of the areas identified with demand for tanker supply fall under zones 4, 9, 11, 14 and 15.
D.Gentley Rathnaraj, Sholinganallur Phase II TNHB 1,500 MSB Flat Owners Welfare Association, said many large apartment complexes that lack piped water supply relied on either on Metrowater or private tanker supply. 'We often purchase water whenever supply from Nemmeli desalination plant drops. The availability of larger capacity vehicles will ensure better quality water at an affordable cost for apartments,' he said.
The water agency would replace the present fleet of 16 kl capacity lorries with 18 kl tankers to distribute water to hospitals and partly commercial buildings. This would reduce the number of trips and ensure additional volume of water in a single trip for bulk consumers, said officials.
While Rs.697 has been fixed as rate to be paid to contractors per 12 kl lorry trip, Rs.820 would be paid to lorry owners for operating one 18 kl tanker trip. The rate to be offered to consumers is being finalised.
S.Kesavaram, secretary, Chennai Metrowater Tanker Lorry Contractors Association, said the work order has been renewed for three years. The city would have only 2024-model water tankers plying on the roads in a few days.

Consumer court orders BDA to refund Rs 8 lakh for delay in handing over flat

Bengaluru: The IV Addl District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to refund Rs 8.03 lakh, with 18% interest, to a Marathahalli resident here, who waited for nine years for possession of a flat that BDA had promised to deliver in a year's time. On March 21, 2025, the Commission ordered BDA to refund Rs 8.03 lakh, along with an interest of 18% from the date the first payment was made, Rs 1 lakh for service deficiency, Rs 25,000 for mental agony, and another Rs 10,000 in litigation costs. The complainant, Suryaprakash H R, 70, had booked a 1BHK flat at Gunjur village under the housing scheme for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) on March 7, 2014, making an initial payment of Rs 1.12 lakh. According to Suryaprakash, BDA had allotted him a 1BHK flat in Gunjur through draw of lots, and On December 3, 2014, he was told to pay the remaining amount of Rs 7.87 lakh within six months. To fulfil this, Suryaprakash took out a housing loan of Rs 8 lakh, which was released to BDA in four instalments. However, thereafter, BDA neither issued a firm date for registration, nor did it respond to the complainant's repeated inquiries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Worse still, the allotment-related file could not be traced at the BDA office by its officials. Construction halted midway When Suryaprakash visited the project site in 2016, he found only the first and second floors had been built, with no further progress. On December 22, 2016, he wrote to the chief minister, who in turn directed the BDA commissioner to act. A letter from BDA's chief engineer confirmed that construction had been entrusted to Deepak Cable India Ltd., but due to non-completion, the contract was cancelled and re-tendered. As the delays dragged on, Suryaprakash and other EWS allottees staged a hunger strike in front of the Gunjur BDA project. On January 5, 2019, they submitted a joint representation to BDA and again approached the CM on June 15, 2019. The CMO yet again forwarded the complaint to the BDA commissioner, but work remained incomplete. Frustrated with his runs from pillar to post, on Jan 28, 2023, Suryaprakash issued a legal notice to BDA, followed by a representation to the deputy CM on October 26, 2023. The BDA deputy secretary replied on April 3, 2024, acknowledging receipt of Rs 4.73 lakh, but alleging that Rs 3.13 lakh was due. Suryaprakash countered the claim, saying he had already paid 95% of the sale amount. On June 13, 2024, he finally filed a consumer complaint, seeking a full refund. Unjustified act The BDA's legal counsel contested the claim, saying Rs 1.16 lakh was still due, and that possession was withheld because of that. The Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission observed that the elderly complainant was a valid allottee who had paid 95% of the flat cost by August 2015. Rejecting BDA's claim that possession was withheld due to the pending amount, the consumer court observed that it did not justify the delay, and ruled that BDA had failed to provide proper civic amenities, parking facility, and sanitary connections at the Gunjur project, making the residential units uninhabitable.

Laptop Scam: BCC appoints special investigation officer;

Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) commissioner Shubha B on Tuesday clarified that she has ordered a detailed investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase and distribution of laptops to SC/ST students. The inquiry follows allegations of inflated pricing and the installation of pirated software on the distributed devices. A month ago, BCC distributed 203 laptops to meritorious SC/ST students using unutilised funds earmarked for the purpose from the past three years, supplemented by grants from the State Finance Commission (SFC). However, Dalit organisations recently staged protests in the city, accusing the corporation of supplying substandard laptops at inflated prices. During the council meeting held on Tuesday, several corporators, including Advocate Hanumant Kongali, Ravi Dhotre, Ramesh Sontakki, and Dinesh Nashipudi, raised concerns about the procurement process. Responding to the allegations, commissioner Shubha B informed the council that a special officer has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation. She added that the laptops distributed to the 10 students were taken back for examination following reports of pirated software being installed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Melhor e mais barato marketing que existe Balinhas Personalizadas Undo Corporators questioned the corporation's payment of Rs 49,000 per laptop, despite the maximum retail price (MRP) on the boxes being Rs 35,000. The investigating officer stated that the local HP distributor was asked to furnish a detailed cost breakdown based on the required specifications. The contractor, according to initial findings, installed Windows and other software for an additional Rs 10,000 — a matter also under scrutiny. Corporators allege misguidance by officials Corporator Hanumant Kongali strongly criticised BCC officials, accusing them of misleading elected representatives and misusing the intended fund. "The amount was meant to offer direct financial assistance to students, not for procuring laptops. Yet, the officials convinced corporators to approve the purchase. This is a serious violation and must be thoroughly investigated," he said. Kongali further highlighted procedural lapses, noting that tenders were floated in Jan, while approval from the Standing Committee on Finance was granted only in March. He called this sequence a 'major blunder' that demands accountability. MLA Abhay Patil also held the officials responsible for misleading the corporators in the case and demanded an inquiry. Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed commissioner Shubha B to table the investigation report before the council upon completion of the probe.
