Irish champion jockey labels drink-driving conviction a 'nightmare' and 'mistake'

Sunday World2 days ago
Oisin Murphy was fined €80,000 and banned from driving for 20 monts after pleading guilty.
Irish champion jockey Oisin Murphy has described his recent 'nightmare' following a car crash and subsequent drink-driving conviction in a UK court.
The Kerry native was banned from driving for 20 months and hit with a fine of £70,000 (€80,000) after admitting to driving a vehicle over the prescribed limit of alcohol in April.
The court heard that the 29-year-old drove his Mercedes A Class off the road and into a tree in the English village of Hermitage in the county of Berkshire at 12.05am on Sunday, April 27.
Both the Kerryman and his female passenger were taken to hospital after the crash, with Murphy then twice taking breathalyser test at a police station once he was discharged.

The jockey was found to be over the drink-driving limit after blowing a reading of 66mg per 100m of breath.
Following the court proceedings, the British Horseracing Authority imposed an 'extremely strict set of conditions and monitoring requirements' on Murphy's riding licence, the details of which have been kept confidential.
The Irishman has now spoken up for the first time in the wake of his convcition and has labelled the ordeal as a 'nightmare for everyone involved'.
"It's very important not to make that error again, it was a nightmare particularly for everyone involved, not just myself, for everyone else and the people who had to pick up the pieces, my support network,' he said in an interview with At The Races.

"Time is a great healer but I won't be forgetting about that mistake.
"They (the BHA) never disclose licence information, I'm not the first jockey to drink and drive or commit offences, it's obviously more high profile because it's me.
"Due to the profile I have, those incidents should never occur but the BHA have been fantastic to work with and I really appreciate what they have done to help me and I want to repay them.'
Murphy also offered an update on the condition of the passenger who was alongside him for the crash, noting she 'is really well'.
When asked whether she was back living a normal life, the 29-year-old responded: 'I don't think that's anyone's business.'
During sentencing, Judge Sam Goozee has stated that Murphy was 'lucky that neither you, your passenger, or the public were injured'.
The judge added: 'I do balance that with the remorse you have shown for your actions. You have also recognised that you have let the public down by virtue of your actions, and your colleagues in the racing world.'
The Killarney man stated he has been in counselling for the past four years but has 'relied on it an awful lot' since the crash in April.
Murphy's racing career has continued since his driving ban and recently landed a double at Windsor Racecourse this past Monday.

Alarming rise in rape and sexual assaults in Wexford provide ‘wake-up call' on ‘epidemic of violence against women'

Data obtained on foot of a Freedom of Information Request submitted by Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has shown a 120% increase in the number of reported rapes and sexual assaults reported in the Wexford Garda Division when compared with 20 years ago. The figures show that in 2003 the Wexford Garda Division recorded 50 rapes/sexual assaults. The figure for 2024 had more than doubled with 110 recorded incidents in 2024. In terms of the South East region, Waterford was the only county which saw a higher number of sexual assaults with 126, however, Wexford had seen a higher percentage increase, 120% compared to Waterford's 83%. Almost all garda divisions saw a notable increase in reported sexual assaults, with Dublin accounting for the highest numbers in 2024, followed by Cork City (194), Galway (171). The lowest number of reported instances of sexual assault in 2024 came in Sligo/Leitrim with 57, however, this still represented a 111% increase on the figure of 27 from 20 years previously. Ms Ní Mhurchú also pointed out that, as of May 31, 2025, there were 800 sex offenders in Irish prisons, carrying a cost of almost €80 million annually for the state. The number of sex offenders in Irish prisons had increased by 16% when compared to last year. The MEP has raised serious concerns about the ability of the Irish Prison system to rehabilitate sex offenders and the 'value for money' of spending €80 million each year 'to house sex offenders that we are not treating'. She added that the statistics were 'a wakeup call to action' and says that 'it's clear we are dealing with an epidemic of violence against women'. A former family law barrister herself, Ms Ní Mhurchú has called for a suite of measures to tackle rising violence against women including a review of sentencing for these crimes, advanced training for circuit and district court judges, more consultation with victims, more focused measures to rehabilitate offenders and a thorough investigation 'as to why we've seen a ten-fold increase in the number of rapes and sexual assaults across every county in Ireland'. She added that she will be seeking an urgent meeting with Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan to discuss what she has termed 'a crisis'.

Irish mum was so drunk on Aer Lingus flight she didn't even know where she was

The behaviour of a drunk Irish mum who swigged from a bottle of duty free spirits was of 'real concern' to airline staff, a court heard. Police were alerted before the Manchester-bound flight from Dublin due to Nicola Dooley's conduct. Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court heard a bottle of spirits she had bought was found to be three-quarters empty. Dooley had been put at the back of the plane. The 38-year-old was so drunk she didn't know where she was when she was spoken to by police. She was hauled before a judge and handed a suspended prison sentence, Manchester Evening News reports. Prosecuting, Zahra Khan said officers at Manchester Airport were informed of reports of an 'aggressive' passenger on an Aer Lingus flight, which was due to arrive on December 22 last year from Dublin. Dooley had been moved to the rear of the plane due to her behaviour. She used 'abusive language' towards other passengers, the court heard. When she arrived at Manchester, it became 'obvious' to police Dooley was drunk. She couldn't find her ID documents and said she 'didn't know she was in Manchester', and said she had 'missed her flight'. They discovered she had a duty free bag containing three, one litre bottles of spirits. One had been opened and was three-quarters empty. Dooley pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aircraft. Nicola Dooley (Image: Manchester Evening News) Defending, Megan Edwards said Dooley had experienced 'extreme shame, embarrassment and remorse'. She said the defendant has no previous convictions. Ms Edwards said no members of staff or passengers were willing to make a witness statement. Sending Dooley to prison would have a 'significant harmful impact' on her children, the barrister said. She told the court Dooley had been travelling to and from her native Ireland frequently at the time, to facilitate contact between her children and her partner who still lives in the country. Dooley had moved to the UK months prior, Ms Edwards said. Sentencing, Judge Tina Landale told Dooley: 'Your behaviour was clearly of real concern because the staff on board requested the police to attend on landing to arrest you. 'It was reported that there was an aggressive passenger onboard who was heavily intoxicated. But it is relevant that not a single passenger or a single crew member has chosen to make a witness statement. 'Your behaviour demonstrates that you were extremely drunk. You couldn't find your ID documents and you didn't even know where you were.' Dooley, of Granville Terrace, Huddersfield, was sentenced to three months, suspended for 12 months. She was ordered to carry out 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days. Get all the big crime and court stories direct to your phone on our new WhatsApp service. Sign up here.

Pictures from his luxury yacht trip in Italy show the MMA fighter sparring and soaking in the sun alongside Dee. In moments, Conor could also be seen gently patting his partner on the bum on the expensive boat, which was adorned with balloons in the colours of the Irish flag. Dee had shared a birthday tribute to Conor earlier this week, amidst the explosive allegations about the fighter's behaviour. Not only has the fighter come under fire for snogging the mystery brunette on a Florida beach but US rapper Azealia Banks has accused him of sending her unsolicited "d*** pics" . The 212 hitmaker shared the explicit photos that allegedly show the UFC brawler on X, alongside his threat 'don't be a rat cos (sic) all rats get caught'. While Dee - who's dated Conor for 17 years - hasn't commented on Azealia's claim or the fighter's holiday snaps, she's weathered even more sensational accusations levied against him in the past. There have been alleged affairs, punch-ups outside the ring and Conor being forced to pay £206,000 in damages to a woman who accused him of 'brutally raping and battering' her. She shared a post from a fan account which read: "Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile." Prior to his beach encounter, the MAM fighter was spotted cosying up to a mystery blonde in a nightclub birthday bash. The star was seen in a Dublin nightclub getting close to a fellow reveller. The former UFC champion was pictured smiling with his hands around a blonde woman's waist. A shocked fan snapped the pair on July 6 at Soho nightclub in the Irish capital. On top of his behaviour in Florida and Dublin, Conor has found himself in his latest spat with rapper Azealia Banks, who alleges that the fighter sent her the photos on X unprompted - despite her not following him back. The rapper claims the messages were sexual harassment, but also said that she sent the boxer nude pictures as well in a sexting-back and-forth since 2016. MCGREGOR'S LEGAL ISSUES Last year, the MMA star was found liable in a civil case that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. It was alleged that he had choked the claimant, leading to her fearing for her life. He disputes the charges, arguing that they had consensual sex. A second woman accused him of sexual assault following a June 2023 incident at an NBA Finals game in Miami. The 49-year-old victim accused an "intoxicated" of slamming her face against a bathroom stall and placing her in an armlock before raping her. The woman alleged that McGregor engaged "in unlawful sexual contact" to fulfil his "own sexual gratification" and to "degrade" her. Read more on the Irish Sun Florida prosecutors, however, declined to pursue criminal charges for the alleged assault with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, citing insufficient evidence in the case back in October 2023. McGregor denies any accusations of wrongdoing.
