Mazda Miata Celebrates Its 35th Anniversary With A Perfectly Spec'd Limited Edition

Yahoo28-01-2025
Can you believe it's been 35 years since the Mazda Miata hit the market? Now in its fourth generation, more than one million of the beloved sports car have been sold over the three decades it's been on sale. To celebrate that milestone, Mazda has introduced a special edition Miata in a handsome spec most fans of the sports car will love.
Aptly named the Mazda MX-5 Miata 35th Anniversary, its spec is quite perfect, recalling the M-Edition model of the '90s NA Miata. The exterior is painted in a beautiful dark red called Artisan Red Metallic that's taken from the CX-90 crossover, which looks exceptionally smooth and deep, something Mazda says can be attributed to its Takuminuri paint process that finishes the car in three layers of paint. The exterior is topped off with brightly finished 17-inch wheels, a color-matched rear spoiler, serialized rear fender badging and a beige convertible top.
Inside there's tan Nappa leather seating with special 35th Anniversary logos, tan carpets and floor mats, and even a key fob sleeve in matching leather. Like on other ND Miatas the trim on the upper door panels is color-matched to the Artisan Red Metallic paint, and Mazda took the interior design one step further and color-matched the trim around the air vents as well.
With only 300 examples being made, the 35th Anniversary Miata will truly be a limited edition. Mazda says they'll all be equipped the same way: Fully loaded Grand Touring trims with a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers who spend the $37,435 on the 35th Anniversary model will also be invited to a special Miata event held by Mazda, though the automaker isn't saying much about that yet. If you're interested, the 2025 Miata 35th Anniversary Edition is available to order at dealers now.

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid is a bit of a nonconformist in the growing compact hybrid SUV class. It's got a vestigial third row—a rarity in the segment—but that means its usage is limited to children and contortionists. This plug-in hybrid offers up to 38 miles of EPA-estimated EV-range, but its overall fuel economy could be better. It's quicker than its non-hybrid sibling, but at a starting base price approximately $10k higher. On the plus side, for 2026 Mitsubishi has tuned its flaccid suspension for a better ride-and-handling balance and added soundproofing materials to quiet the cabin. Despite its newfound improvements, the Outlander Hybrid still has an uphill battle on its hands, as its segment is now in full bloom with more modern and less expensive competitors. Expert Tip: Rivals such as the Honda CR-V Hybrid or Mazda CX-50 Hybrid lack the plug-in capabilities of the Mitsubishi, but they still offer better fuel economy than their nonhybrid counterparts and cost less than the Outlander Hybrid. What's New for 2026? A larger battery arrives alongside an increased range and improved acceleration, while a mild suspension upgrade is said to improve ride and handling. Exterior cosmetics get attention too. The 2026 Outlander PHEV picks up a revised grille and front bumper, new 20-inch wheel designs, and smoked taillamps. The interior sees many of the same upgrades the nonhybrid Outlander received for 2025, including heated and cooled front seats, a redesigned wireless phone charger, a new console with a larger storage bin and cupholders, additional sound-deadening materials for a quieter cabin, and new interior color choices. There's also a standard Yamaha-branded audio system. Pricing and Which One to Buy The SE trim is the best value. Its small price hike over the base ES is easily justified by the addition of 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, a larger 9.0-inch infotainment system, in-dash navigation, heated front seats with eight-way power adjustments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors. If your budget allows, consider adding the Tech package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, a nine-speaker Bose stereo, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Hybrid Powertrain: 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, 248 hp combined 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, 248 hp combined Transmissions: Continuously variable automatic (CVT) Continuously variable automatic (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel drive In our first test drive, we noted that the Outlander PHEV felt perkier than its nonhybrid sibling, especially in urban driving. Dynamically, however, the Outlander Hybrid is a bit boring. Its ride is agreeable enough, but its cornering attitude is far from sporty, and the brake pedal also feels squishy, even if braking performance proved to be okay. Those who enjoy the act of driving should consider the more athletic Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Luckily, there are paddles on the steering column that allow you to dial in how much regenerative braking the hybrid system will allow for. Its highest regenerative setting allows for nearly one-pedal driving, saving you from having to step on the spongy left pedal much. 0–60-MPH Times In Comparison: The Outlander PHEV is not only more efficient than its nonhybrid sibling, but also quicker. The nonhybrid needed 8.2 seconds to hit 60 mph. The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid required 7.6 seconds. Mitsubishi Towing and Payload Capacity The Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid is rated to tow a maximum of 1500 pounds. Range, Charging, and Battery Life C/D Range Test: 370 miles 370 miles EPA EV Range: 38 miles The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has a lithium-ion battery with 16.8 kWh of usable capacity. Though it currently uses the outdated CHAdeMo style plug, we anticipate that Mitsubishi will update its charging port for the 2026 model along with the already-confirmed larger battery of currently unknown capacity. Hooked to a DC fast-charger, Mitsubishi claims the current Outlander PHEV can charge the battery to 80-percent capacity in just 38 minutes. We'll update this section as soon as the new specifics become available. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 25 mpg 25 mpg EPA City Ratings: 25 mpg 25 mpg EPA Highway Rating: 27 mpg The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Outlander Hybrid yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 25 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. But Mitsubishi says a slightly larger battery is on the way for 2026, and we'll update this space as soon as the EPA data is in and we get one to run through our extensive testing regimen. For more information about the Outlander Hybrid's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: The Outlander Hybrid's interior design is stylish and well-appointed with quilted seat coverings and a bold, minimalist dashboard. Seats are comfortable, and the mild bolstering supports but doesn't pinch. Headroom and legroom are both generous here, beating several rival compact SUVs. Second Row: Though the styling echoes that of the first row, the second-row backrests are rather flat and lack the support of the fronts. There's a fold-down center armrest with a pair of cupholders, but there's less passenger space here than in the CR-V Hybrid and CX-50 Hybrid. Third Row: Kudos to Mitsubishi for squeezing a third row into a compact SUV, but its use is best reserved for kids and pets, as legroom is limited and access is challenging. Cargo Capacity: The Outlander has 13 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 31 cubic feet behind the second row, and 61 cubic feet when folded flat. With all three rows in place, we fit three carry-on-sized bags; the count grows to nine suitcases with the third row folded, and 27 pieces with both the second and third rows folded down. Mitsubishi Infotainment and Connectivity Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Audio System: 8-speaker Yamaha stereo (standard), 12-speaker Yamaha stereo (optional) A 12.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup. It includes navigation and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10.8-inch full-color head-up display is available as an option, too. Base models come with an eight-speaker stereo tuned by Yamaha, but a more premium Yamaha setup with 12 speakers is available on higher-end trims. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Basic driver-assistance technology features such as automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning are standard, but if you want more advanced features you will need to upgrade to the SE or SEL trim levels to unlock those, including adaptive cruise control. Standard Safety Features: Forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert Forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert Optional Safety Features: Adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist For information about the Outlander Hybrid's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Mitsubishi now offers complimentary maintenance, and its standard powertrain warranty is good for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Hybrid components also receive the same 10-year/100,000-mile coverage. Limited Warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles Five years or 60,000 miles Powertrain Warranty: 10 years or 100,000 miles 10 years or 100,000 miles Complimentary Maintenance: Two years or 30,000 miles C/D Test Results and Specs We test every vehicle we can. 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV is an automotive antihero of sorts, shifting the focus away from performance and instead prioritizing core capabilities like standard all-wheel drive, reasonable fuel efficiency, and comfortable (if sparse) cabin appointments. Power comes from a 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine that funnels its torque to all four wheels via an unexciting but serviceable continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). It can't be considered quick, and its handling can feel a bit languid, but those are not its primary missions. On the other hand, the Crosstrek offers up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance, enough to back up its rugged pretensions—we've driven it in mild off-road situations and walked away impressed. Though it may lack the contemporary style of the Mazda CX-30 or Volkswagen Taos, its endearing charm is hard to dismiss. Expert Tip: Subaru introduced a Crosstrek Hybrid for 2026. A cosmetic twin of the standard Crosstrek, it shares its spunky style but claims to offer improved city fuel efficiency. What's New for 2026? The 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder is now standard across the lineup, including the base model, which previously used a 152-hp 2.0-liter four. Crosstrek Limited and Wilderness trims get a heated steering wheel as standard equipment. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek starts at $28,415 and goes up to $35,215 depending on the trim and options. Base $28,415 Premium $29,415 Sport $32,045 Limited $34,415 Wilderness $35,215 0 $10k $20k $30k $40k $50k $60k We recommend the Premium trim. Its nominal upcharge unlocks the larger 11.6-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and roof rail cross bars. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Engine: 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Transmission: Continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) Continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel drive All models come with a 180-hp 2.5-liter four; a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is the only transmission option. As on most other Subaru models, all-wheel drive is standard. The Crosstrek's chassis isn't taking cues from Subaru's sporty WRX sports sedan. We'd called its on-road personality "relaxed." It's a soft-riding crossover, and while its cornering capabilities are likely far more than its intended buyer will ever exploit, it doesn't offer the same level of driving enjoyment as the Mazda CX-30or the Volkswagen Taos. The Crosstrek can probably do more off-roading than those crossovers though, as it boasts at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance and comes with hill-descent control and hill-start assist features. The Wilderness trim offers 9.3 inches of ground clearance and wears more aggressive all-terrain tires. During our initial test drive, we sampled some of the Crosstrek's capabilities on some rutted two-tracks and light off-road trails in Joshua Tree National Park outside Palm Springs, California. On those sorts of trails, it does just fine. 0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 8.1 seconds (Limited); 8.6 seconds (Wilderness) In Comparison: Chalk up the Wilderness model's slower acceleration to its all-terrain tires and rugged styling. Still, the similar Mazda CX-30 with the base non-turbo engine also required 8.1 seconds to hit 60. The turbocharged CX-30 did it in a tidy 5.8 seconds. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity Max tow rating is set at 1500 pounds for all but the Wilderness trim, which is rated for 3500 pounds. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 36 mpg 36 mpg EPA City Rating: 25-27 mpg 25-27 mpg EPA Highway Rating: 29-33 mpg The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Crosstrek yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings as high as 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined for models equipped with the now-standard 2.5-liter engine. For more information about the Crosstrek's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: Comfortable utility is the theme here. Despite its subcompact dimensions, the Crosstrek's front passenger compartment has plenty of room for people of nearly all dimensions. Controls are easy to access, and the seats hide no sharp edges or pinch points. There's 42.9 inches of legroom and 39.8 inches of headroom. That's more than the CX-30's 41.7 and 38.1 inches, respectively. Second Row: The Crosstrek utilizes a 60/40 split-folding second row seatback. The seat cushions are satisfactory for most uses but lack the supportive padding found in more premium brands that take the pinch out of longer drives. The Crosstrek's 36.5 inches of rear passenger legroom are about average for the class. Cargo Capacity: With 20 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row and 55 cubes with it folded down, the Crosstrek easily beats out the CX-30 (20 and 45 cubes, respectively). In C/D testing, the Crosstrek fit 7 carry-on bags behind the second row, and 22 with it folded. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Infotainment and Connectivity Infotainment: 7-inch touchscreen (standard), 11.6-inch touchscreen (optional) Connectivity: Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (standard), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (optional) Audio System: 4-speaker stereo (standard); 6-speaker stereo (optional); 10-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo (optional) The base model makes do with a 7-inch screen, wired CarPlay and Android Auto, a four-speaker stereo, and a USB-A port alongside a 3.5mm audio jack. Moving to the Premium trim bumps you up to the larger touchscreen while adding wireless connectivity, six-speaker audio, and four USB ports (two front and two rear), making its reasonable price increase feel like a bargain. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Every Crosstrek comes with Subaru's latest EyeSight driver-assistance feature bundle as standard. Available emergency steering is bundled with blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert. For information about the Crosstrek's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard Safety Features: Adaptive cruise control, automated braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Adaptive cruise control, automated braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Optional Safety Features: Automatic emergency steering, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Subaru's warranty coverage is exactly in line with that of most of its competitors. Mazda Uses AI To Slash Development Time And Boost Efficiency

Mazda Uses AI To Slash Development Time And Boost Efficiency originally appeared on Autoblog. Mazda has confirmed that it's now using generative AI to accelerate both vehicle design and early development stages, trimming weeks — even months — off its traditional timelines. The Japanese automaker, known for doing things its own stubborn way, says the technology is being deployed for design sketches, structural modelling, and data analysis. This move comes as part of a broader pivot toward modernization, even as Mazda remains one of the few carmakers still resisting the electric bandwagon. The AI toolset isn't just a fancy gimmick. It's a practical leap forward for a company that's long prioritized lean operations and lightweight performance over flashy tech for the sake of it. Rather than outsourcing early design to external agencies or relying on slow legacy systems, Mazda's in-house teams can now feed prompts into generative tools and get hundreds of design variants in minutes — dramatically reducing turnaround times during critical planning phases. Still Selling More Without An EV In Sight While others are pushing EVs and monthly software subscriptions, Mazda is out there… selling actual cars. In fact, Mazda's gas-powered SUV lineup is smashing records, with the company expected to break its U.S. sales figures from 1986 by the end of 2025. That's over 450,000 cars — mostly crossovers — sold without a single pure EV in the catalogue. It's a gutsy move, but clearly one that's company's top brass have credited this success to their strategic focus on practical, affordable vehicles. Mazda hasn't chased headlines with EV moonshots. Instead, it has honed its core offerings — compact and mid-size SUVs — into sharp, competitive packages that consumers still want. And now, by injecting AI into the workflow, Mazda's design and engineering departments are getting faster, sharper, and even more cost-efficient. Gas Isn't Dead — Just Smarter Despite all the electrification chatter, Mazda hasn't turned its back on internal combustion. Far from it. Engineers are currently developing a next-generation SKYACTIV-Z engine that promises major leaps in both efficiency and power. Instead of scrapping petrol outright, the company's aim is to burn it smarter — with leaner mixtures, lower emissions, and clever thermal efficiency gains. It's basically Mazda doing Mazda things: taking an old idea and making it quietly same philosophy explains why Mazda hasn't abandoned the small car market or jacked up its prices like everyone else. In fact, Mazda's strategy around affordability is becoming something of a rarity. While rivals chase margins and bloat their lineups with tech-laden behemoths, Mazda continues to offer fun, efficient, well-built cars that don't cost more than a small yacht. Radical, apparently. A Quiet Tech Revolution Mazda might not shout about its tech the way Tesla or Hyundai do, but its approach to AI is a sign of where the brand is headed — and how it plans to stay relevant. It's not abandoning what makes Mazdas great: simplicity, precision, and value. It's just building those things faster and if that means your next MX-5 or CX-5 arrives a year sooner, built better and designed with input from an AI that's eaten 40 years of sports car geometry? Well, that doesn't sound half bad.
