HAWANA 2025: MMC Act To Strengthen Media Integrity -- MPI President

Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) President Datuk Yong Soo Heong delivers his welcoming remarks at the opening of the HAWANA 2025 Forum in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) today.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The enactment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act marks a significant milestone in the country's media landscape, serving to enhance media integrity, said Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president Datuk Yong Soo Heong.
Speaking at the HAWANA 2025 Forum today, Yong said the MMC Bill, passed by Parliament this year, culminated years of deliberation aimed at establishing a self-regulatory body to empower media practitioners while ensuring accountability.
'This Act is designed to safeguard journalistic integrity, promote fair reporting, and provide a structured mechanism for addressing public concerns about media practices,' he said.

Also present were MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 project director.
Yong expressed his appreciation to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching, as well as former minister Gobind Singh Deo, for their efforts in championing the Act.
He said the legislation aims to strengthen ethical standards and restore public trust in journalism while ensuring that professionals in the field have the autonomy to self-regulate.
On the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, Yong acknowledged its potential in enhancing newsroom operations but cautioned against over-reliance on the technology.
'Yet, while AI presents exciting opportunities, it must be adopted judiciously. Journalism is not merely about data processing; it is about human judgment, investigative rigour and ethical responsibility,' he said.
Yong stressed that AI should complement, not replace, journalists, and the challenge lies in integrating the technology responsibly to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of media without eroding core journalistic values.

The round, set to follow five previous sessions beginning in April -- with talks alternating between Muscat and Rome -- had aimed to replace the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) through indirect discussions led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Despite the cancellation, Albusaidi added that 'diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace.'

MTD group chief executive officer Reime Rizal Abd Aziz stated that the projects -- to be developed in Taman Tasik Utama, Ayer Keroh -- are the MTD Nexus 28 Industrial Park, slated for launch in August, and MTD Elysia Heights in October. 'The development of MTD Nexus 28 Industrial Park will be a modern industrial estate equipped with smart systems and solar PV panel installations to support sustainability. The project will involve 87 industrial units or factory lots, primarily targeting the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector. bootstrap slideshow 'Meanwhile, MTD Elysia Heights is a residential development comprising 197 units designed with a contemporary concept, offering stylish living, comfort, and long-term value to buyers who prioritise quality of life in a strategic location. Reime Rizal made the remarks following the groundbreaking ceremony of MTD Nexus 28 Industrial Park, the pre-launch of MTD Elysia Heights, and the official opening of the Metacorp Properties Sales Office, officiated by State Deputy Senior Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management, Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin. Reime Rizal said the two property projects will span approximately 8.89 hectares, with each expected to be completed within two years of commencement. In terms of pricing, the industrial units at MTD Nexus 28 Industrial Park will start from RM650,000 per unit, while the residential units at MTD Elysia Heights will be priced from RM430,000 each. Meanwhile, Nik Fauzan noted that the current property industry not only faces challenges such as construction costs and consumer purchasing power, but also evolving public expectations regarding sustainability and affordable, quality housing.
