About 2,000 gallons of diesel spills in Baltimore waterfront, US officials say
June 5 (Reuters) - A 2,000-gallon diesel spill that originated at a hospital facility in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday tainted a waterfront in a popular tourist spot in the city, but there was no impact on drinking water in the area, officials said on Thursday.
The spill originated from a Johns Hopkins Hospital facility near the marina and was initially estimated at only 100 gallons, the office of Maryland Governor Wes Moore said in a statement.
The spill has been contained in the marina in Harbor East, an area roughly 100 by 250 yards, the statement added.
Moore's office said that the water in the area had turned red due to dye in the diesel fuel, and that the U.S. Coast Guard was working with a contractor on cleanup efforts.
"My team and I are currently onsite at Fells Point, where there's been an oil spill of unknown origins," Moore said in a post on X earlier on Wednesday, before the origin of the spill was identified. Fells Point is a historic, waterfront neighborhood in the city.
Johns Hopkins Hospital was engaged in response, according to the governor's statement. The hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

WTI-Brent spread at narrowest in almost two years as US prices rise
HOUSTON, June 6 (Reuters) - The spread between U.S. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude futures narrowed to its tightest level since September 2023 on Friday as U.S. prices rose on a sliding rig count and Canadian wildfires that cut supplies, analysts and traders said. U.S. futures ended the week 4.9% higher, while Brent futures rose 2.75%, as OPEC+ output increases put a cap on gains. A narrower spread indicates a closed arbitrage window for traders and weaker shipping economics to Europe and Asia. The tighter spread can act as an early indicator that U.S. crude exports will likely fall in the next few weeks, assuming the premium for Brent crude remains weak. The inclusion of WTI-Midland crude in the dated Brent index has meant that the spread between the two is increasingly correlated to freight rates, as the price of Dated Brent is set by WTI Midland on many trading days. The spread between the two crude benchmarks narrowed to as little as $2.78 a barrel during the session on Friday. A discount of $4 per barrel is typically considered the level that encourages U.S. exports to Europe, as traders see an open arbitrage route. The spread has remained narrower than $4 a barrel since May 1, according to data from LSEG, partly due to concerns around U.S. production, helping keep more barrels onshore, according to Phil Flynn, senior analyst with Price Futures Group. Since April, OPEC+ countries including Saudi Arabia and Russia have made or announced increases totaling 1.37 million barrels per day, or 62% of the 2.2 million bpd they aim to add back to the market. Meanwhile the U.S. oil and gas rig count, an early indicator of future output, fell by four to 559 in the week to June 6, the lowest since November 2021, energy services firm Baker Hughes (BKR.O), opens new tab said in its closely followed report on Friday, stoking some concerns around future U.S. production. This has helped create pricing that encourages U.S. oil to remain in the domestic market, traders and analysts said. Wildfires burning in Canada's oil-producing province of Alberta have further buoyed U.S. crude futures, analysts said, with Canadian daily crude production down by about 7%. "With Canadian wildfire season underway, further disruption could push the WTI/Brent spread below $3 this summer," said analysts at Sparta Commodities. "When you look at the WTI/Brent spread, you can see the concerns a little bit around leveling off U.S. production and concerns about export barrels tightening up," said Price Futures Group's Flynn.

8 now arrested in North Carolina house party shootings and more attempted-murder charges are filed
Eight people have now been arrested and charged in connection with last weekend's shootings at a western North Carolina house party where a barrage of gunfire ended with one person dead and 11 others injured, authorities said. Five defendants whose arrests were announced Thursday or early Friday by the Catawba County Sheriff's Office made court appearances Friday. Four of the five were facing one count each of attempted first-degree murder. A judge ordered two of those four to remain in jail without bond, according to the Catawba County Clerk of Court's office. But late Friday, the sheriff's office announced that 10 additional counts of attempted first-degree murder had been filed against each of the four who already faced one similar count. All four were jailed pending scheduled court appearances early next week, according to an office press release. A prosecutor handling the defendants' appearances Friday said in court that the shootings were gang-related, and the sheriff's office agreed, news outlets reported. 'Gang motives were a part of this tragedy,' sheriff's Maj. Aaron Turk told WSOC-TV. 'We are still unraveling that as part of our larger investigation.' Investigators have said both adults and young people were among the scores of attendees at the house party in a residential neighborhood roughly 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) northwest of Charlotte. Another defendant arrested earlier in the week also is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder. The two others were charged with helping underage youth possess alcoholic beverages — the sheriff's office identified them as planning and promoting the house party. Authorities have said over 80 shots were fired shortly after midnight June 1 in a crime scene that spanned several properties. The shootings began with gunfire coming from an elevated area in a yard neighboring the house, the Catawba sheriff's office has said, with shots later around the home, the home's front yard and by a road. Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, of Lenoir, was killed. He was the oldest of the victims, who ranged in age from as young as 16, the sheriff's office said. Most of the people injured were shot, Turk has said. As of Friday, no one had been specifically charged for Hood's death. Turk told reporters this week that investigators needed to account for every shot that had been fired at partygoers 'before we can discern who might be responsible for the homicide.' FBI agents had been at the crime scene this week examining bullet trajectories.
