Australia and South Africa greats pick the winners of WTC final 2025 at Lord's; is Temba Bavuma listening?

It's all come down to this. Australia. South Africa. Lord's. The World Test Championship final. Two teams that deserve to be at the Mecca of cricket. Australia, the defending champions, are featuring in their second WTC final. South Africa, their first. Australia are heading into this as heavy favourites, and why wouldn't they be? This team is no stranger to winning ICC tournaments. No, winning big ICC tournaments. They are the reigning ODI and Test World Champions, looking to add another illustrious feature to the cap. But up against them is a side that is fearless, has no baggage and nothing to lose. They have never won a World Cup before, let alone any ICC event, barring the 1998 Champions Trophy knockout. The Proteas are no strangers to heartbreak, but they know how to inflict one. Ask Ricky Ponting's men what happened at the Bullring on March 12, 2006, and you'll understand.
When it comes to ICC tournaments, though, Australia have always had the better of South Africa. The 1999 semi-final at Edgbaston needs no introduction; neither does the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup in India. But still, if there are any two teams that can match each other blow for blow, it's these two. There's so much build-up to this already. South Africa has yet to lose a Test match under Temba Bavuma, while Pat Cummins hasn't lost any ICC final he has competed in. And take a note of this. South Africa are on a seven-match winning streak in Test cricket, with their captain 'Lord' Bavuma in red-hot form.

But as even a contest this is – also considering the fact that Australia and South Africa last played a Test match back in January – the narrative building outside is rather one-sided. A bunch of legendary former Australian and South African cricketers, ahead of the big clash, discussed the possible outcome and their prediction to lift the ICC mace. And by god, the verdict is a landslide.
Michael Clarke, the former Australia World Cup-winning captain on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast: "I think Australia definitely go in as favourites. I love that we are back playing Test cricket. Players in whites, over five days. The IPL has just finished, but now this transition to Test cricket is super exciting. South Africa are underrated, but they deserve to be where they are. But Australia are and should be the favourites. This Australian team has a lot of experience; their bowling attack is phenomenal. They go into this Test match as favourites; there's no doubt about it."

Mark Boucher, former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter on ESPNcricinfo: "Australia are the favourites. But we'll have to come from behind."
Aaron Finch, former Australia captain, had the same thing to say on ESPNcricinfo: "I think Australia are still the favourites, particularly on neutral territory."
Shaun Pollock, former South Africa captain, said on SKY Sports: "Hopefully it goes really well for South Africa. It will be the first time these two teams play against each other with the Duke ball. So that should be interesting as well. I'm not going to sit here and say that we're going in anywhere near being favourites but I supposed at the end of the day, we are in the final and we kind of have a chance."
Brad Haddin, former Australia wicketkeeper batter on the LiSTNR Sport podcast: "Yes, Australia win. I think that [Josh] Hazlewood and Pat [Cummins] are going to be hard work. He [Hazlewood] bowled quick in the IPL. He was operating over 140 at times. He was classy. That's what he was. Even Pat, when he got the new ball, they were a different team."
Allan Donald, the former South Africa fast bowler on OFM.co.za: "Let's not beat around the bush. Australia are definitely favourites. I just think with what they have in their arsenal, both in terms of batting and bowling – it's a lot. They've got serious quality in the batting line-up and some real firepower with the ball. But the South African team – they're resilient. They've shown time and again during their campaign that when they're thrown a curveball, they somehow manage to find something and dig really deep."
As mentioned above, not a single vote in favour of South Africa. If Temba Bavuma is reading this, look no further for any motivation.

'How lonely it was...': BCCI all but confirms Karun Nair's return to XI; India's final training session hints at line-up

It wasn't just one, but a double assurance that all but confirmed Karun Nair's return to India's playing XI after nearly eight years. The middle-order batter is set to play his first match for India since the 2017 Dharamsala Test against Australia, in the upcoming five-match series against England starting June 20 at Headingley. First, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video on Nair with a "special message" from teammate KL Rahul. The video was captioned: "A comeback story with Karun Nair. P.S. - A special message from KL Rahul." In the clip, Rahul welcomed his former Karnataka teammate with a heartwarming message, in which he opened up about how he prepared himself for the series against England. "I've known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK playing cricket and how hard and how lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team. think it's special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who've seen his journey. So, like I said very inspiring as well and hopefully his experience and his learnings from playing county cricket here will hold him in good stead when he plays the Test matches here," he said. Nair played just six Test matches for India, following his debut in 2016, scoring 374 runs at 62.33, which includes a career-best knock of 303. The veteran batter, who earned his selection this time on the back of a record Ranji season, vindicated the call with a double century in the first match for India A earlier this month, followed by scores of 40 and 15 in the second game. "Feels really special. Very grateful and very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity again and really looking forward and excited to grab this opportunity with both hands," said Nair. "Not sure actually! I think I'll have to experience that feeling myself and, you know, just go out there and feel it for myself. And I'm sure there'll be a lot of feelings, ones that I can't express right now and It'll be a special feeling." With the BCCI clip almost confirming Nair's return, fans could not keep calm as they thanked the Indian board for acting on the senior batter's three-year-old appeal. In 2022, Nair had taken to social media to post, 'Dear cricket, give me one more chance.' A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) If it wasn't just the BCCI clip, India's final training session before the intra-squad match in Beckenham hinted at the possible batting line-up for the series against England. India did a bit of fielding practice on Thursday, with Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper, while the slip cordon featured Karun Nair at first slip, followed by KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, according to a report in RevSportz. Nair is set for a return if the team goes by the slip cordon. Although his batting position is yet to be seen, with few experts reckoning he could replace Virat Kohli, who retired from Test cricket last month, at No. 4.

Watch: Marnus Labuschagne takes stunning catch to dismiss Temba Bavuma on Day 2 of WTC Final

It was all going South Africa's way in the first session of the second day at the ICC World Test Championships final at Lord's, until Marnus Labuschagne dived to his right to pull off a superb catch to dismiss a well-set Temba Bavuma. The South African skipper was batting with a much improved tempo, finding the boundaries regularly, moving to 36 with four fours and a six. And then his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins provided the breakthrough for the defending champions. The relentless accuracy of the Aussie pace attack meant that, despite better intent on Thursday, South Africa hadn't really gotten away too far ahead. Bavuma had formed a solid partnership with David Bedingham and in the 40th over, he went for a flamboyant cover drive to a full-ish length delivery. The timing was alright but the placement wasn't as Labuschagne, a livewire on the field, started moving early to his right from short cover, dived full length and completed a fine catch. A post shared by ICC (@icc) 'Key to fielding is anticipation, expecting the ball. Look at the position he is in, not standing up tall, he was crouching down low, expecting the ball at that height, exceptional catch and brilliant technique,' former England captain Nasser Hussain – who often finds himself on air for these blinders at ICC events – said during commentary. 'He is so balanced as he dived across, eyes on the ball and got two hands to it,' former India head coach Ravi Shastri added. After an excruciating wait for getting off the mark in innings on the opening day, Bavuma came out with much better intent on Day 2, driving the Aussie pacers on the up and even pulling Cummins for a smashing six. On Day 1, Mitchell Starc led an Australia fightback after Kagiso Rabada's superb five-wicket haul, as bowlers dominated proceedings at Lord's where 14 wickets fell. Starc took two top order wickets and combined with fellow quicks Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood to reduce South Africa to 43 for four at the close, 169 runs in arrears. Rabada and Marco Jansen (3/49) had earlier come to the fore as the holders collapsed after tea and were bowled out for 212, losing five for 20 after half-centuries from Steve Smith and Beau Webster had helped them steady the ship.
