Islamic Relief Canada Calls for Immediate International Action to Prevent Further Catastrophe in Gaza

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 8, 2025 /CNW/ - Islamic Relief Canada expresses grave concern over the latest developments in Gaza, as Israel's newly approved plan to take full military control of Gaza City marks a dramatic escalation of an already devastating crisis. This move threatens to deepen the humanitarian catastrophe and accelerate the forced displacement and starvation of an already besieged population.
With more than 200,000 people killed or injured since the start of the massacre, and the International Court of Justice having already found a plausible case of genocide in Gaza, the international community is at a crossroads. Despite the ICJ's ruling and the clear provisional measures it outlined, violations persist with impunity — and rather than complying, Israel is escalating its actions, challenging the very credibility of the international rules-based order.
Our teams are on the ground in Gaza, witnessing the horrific impact of ongoing restrictions, bombardment, and hunger. In northern Gaza, including Gaza City, famine-level starvation is already a daily reality. In the past few days, we were able to distribute hot meals and provide water, first-aid, and psychological support for children in Gaza City, but this is just a drop in the ocean, compared to the extent and urgency of the needs. Between May and July alone, child malnutrition has nearly quadrupled. Our staff report seeing children who are nothing but skin and bones — wasting away as aid is systematically blocked.
While Canadian officials have reiterated the importance of humanitarian access and the protection of civilians, we are collectively not doing nearly enough. The international response must go far beyond statements of concern. Air-dropped food supplies, though symbolically important, are wholly insufficient and often dangerous — both for the civilians below and for the delivery of sustained, organized relief.
This crisis cannot be solved through the expansion of military operations, which will result in further starvation, mass displacement, and blocked aid corridors — deepening a humanitarian nightmare that is already unprecedented.
Islamic Relief Canada urgently calls on the Government of Canada and the international community to:
With 88% of Gaza now declared off-limits to its own population, and growing evidence of forced displacement, the threat of ethnic cleansing is no longer theoretical — it is unfolding in real time.
The world must not look away. We urge all Canadians to raise their voices, demand accountability, and support life-saving humanitarian work on the ground.

Al Jazeera journalists hold vigil for staff slain in Gaza

Al Jazeera staff gathered at the news network's Doha headquarters on Monday for a televised memorial for five colleagues killed by Israel overnight in Gaza. Anas al-Sharif, a recognisable face on the channel, correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were killed in the Israeli attack on Sunday. Scores congregated in an Al Jazeera Arabic studio and newsroom in the Qatari capital to condemn the killings, promising to continue their reporting on the 22-month war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Some held pictures of the journalists killed in a strike on their tent in Gaza City in the north of the Palestinian territory. Among those present in Doha were Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh, whose wife and children were killed in Israeli strikes, and camera operator Fadi Al Wahidi who was left paralysed by a gunshot wound to the neck while reporting in the territory. "Every time we lose a loved one and a colleague, we lose a part of this... family of journalists. This is something extremely difficult and painful," Al-Dahdouh told AFP following the vigil. "We stand in solidarity... and we take whatever action we can, but blatant attacks against international law and against everything continue," he added. The Israeli military confirmed that it had carried out the attack on Al-Sharif, alleging that he was a "terrorist" who "posed as a journalist". Tamer Almisshal, a senior presenter at Al Jazeera overseeing coverage in Gaza, told AFP the Israeli assertions were "fabricated" and "baseless", adding that it was not the first time the Qatar-based channel's journalists in Gaza had been accused of being affiliated with militant groups after being killed. "Israel, by killing and targeting our correspondents and our team in Gaza, they want to kill the truth," Almisshal added. In July, the Committee to Protect Journalists called for Al-Sharif's protection and accused the Israeli military of carrying out online attacks on the reporter by claiming that he was a member of Hamas. With Gaza sealed off, many media groups around the world, including AFP, depend on photo, video and text coverage of the conflict provided by Palestinian reporters. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said in early July that more than 200 journalists had been killed in Gaza since the war began, including several Al Jazeera journalists. Al-Dahdouh explained those journalists still in Gaza "face attacks, murder, fear, hunger, displacement, thirst... after a while, we couldn't recognise many of our colleagues because they had simply lost half their body weight". "Their love for this profession... keeps them connected and carrying out this duty," he added. csp/ysm

Israel's Biggest Labor Union Declines to Join General Strike

An attempt by Israeli hostage families to organize a nationwide strike against plans for a military takeover of Gaza was dealt a blow on Monday, when the country's main labor union declined to join in. The leader of Histadrut said he was concerned the union's involvement would divert the public discourse on the return of hostages into a political debate. The group represents 850,000 members, according to its website.

Macron warns Israel that Gaza occupation plan risks ‘war without end'

French President Emmanuel Macron has sharply criticised Israel's planned takeover of Gaza City, warning it would be a 'disaster' leading to endless war. President Macron has denounced Israel's plan to expand its operations and seize control of Gaza City, warning it was a "disaster" that risked locking the region into "permanent war". This conflict "must end now with a lasting ceasefire," Macron urged in a statement this Monday, describing Israel's proposed takeover of Gaza City as "a disaster of unprecedented gravity – a headlong rush into a war without end." "The Israeli hostages and the people of Gaza will remain the main victims of such a strategy," he added. Israeli plan for Gaza takeover must be halted immediately: UN rights chief Israel announced its military would "take control" of Gaza City, a plan signed off by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet which has drawn sharp criticism from across the globe. Macron called for the creation of a UN-mandated stabilisation mission to help secure the Gaza Strip. "The Security Council must now act to establish such a mission and grant it the necessary mandate,' he said. 'I have instructed my teams to begin work on this immediately with our partners." Israel defends Gaza occupation plan On Sunday, Netanyahu defended the plan, insisting: 'Israel has no choice but to finish the job and ensure the complete defeat of Hamas. We already have about 70 to 75 percent of Gaza under military control – but two strongholds remain: Gaza City and the central camps in Al Mawasi.' Palestinian witnesses reported the heaviest bombardments in weeks on Monday in the eastern suburbs of Gaza City, just hours after Netanyahu said he had ordered the Israeli Defence Forces to speed up their timetable for seizing the city. Tanks and warplanes pounded areas including Sabra, Zeitoun and Shejaia, forcing families to flee westwards. Germany's Merz defends stopping weapons deliveries to Israel Although the Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas militants and dismantling launch sites, residents described one of the worst nights in weeks, raising fears that preparations were under way for a deeper push into the city, which now shelters around a million displaced people. The latest military plans have intensified alarm abroad. Alongside Macron's condemnation, Germany announced it would halt exports of military equipment that could be used in Gaza, while Britain and other European allies urged Israel to rethink its policy. The United States' ambassador to Israel criticised what he saw as some countries pressuring Israel rather than Hamas. Famine unfolding Meanwhile, the United Nations and humanitarian agencies have condemned the planned expansion. "If these plans are implemented, they will likely trigger another calamity in Gaza," UN Assistant Secretary General Miroslav Jenca told the Security Council on Sunday. UN agencies warned last month that famine was unfolding in the territory, with Israel severely restricting the entry of aid. Defining famine: the complex process behind Gaza's hunger crisis Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, figures the United Nations says are reliable. Hamas's October, 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the war, resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to a tally kept by French news agency AFP, based on official figures.
