Diplomats take part in Marka-e-Haq shooting competition
In connection with Marka-e-Haq, and to commemorate the 78th Independence Day of Pakistan, the Special Security Unit (SSU) organised a shooting competition among members of the diplomatic corps.
The event brought together corps from various countries, including the United States of America (USA), Russia, Türkiye, France, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, Iran, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Italy, Ethiopia, and Oman.
In the team category, the US Consulate secured first position, followed by the Russian Consulate in second place, and the Türkiye Consulate in third place.
In the individual male category, Ramzan Duzenci from the Türkiye consulate clinched first position, Tucker Hoefakker from the USA consulate came second, and Vladimir Lenkov from the Russian consulate stood third.
Meanwhile, in the individual female category, Elena Popova from the Russian consulate took first place, followed by Marina Kosareva from the Russian consulate in second place, and Sriprapai Boontinand from the Thailand consulate in third.
DIG Security and Emergency Services congratulated the participants for their performances and presented trophies and medals to the winners and runners-up.

Swiatek swamps Rybakina, to face Paolini in Cincinnati final
Iga Swiatek celebrates after reaching the final of the Cincinnati Open with a straight-sets win over Elena Rybakina. Iga Swiatek reached the final of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open for the first time on Sunday, surging past Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 to book a title clash with Jasmine Paolini. The six-time Grand Slam champion earned a Monday evening final against an opponent with nothing to lose after Paolini managed to "forget" a patch of bad form to claim a 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 win over Russian Veronika Kudermetova. The 29-year-old, who was a two-time Grand Slam finalist in 2024, will bid for the fourth title of her career when she faces Swiatek, who is set to compete in her 13th final at the 1000 level as she closes in on a return to world number two. Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion, recovered an early break in the opening set and powered away to beat 2022 All England winner Rybakina -- who had swept past world number one and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals. The former world number one from Poland now ranked third, had twice stalled at the semi-final stage at the pre-US Open event, but booked her title chance on her third opportunity. "It was a great match, and at the beginning, I was even surprised that I'm able to keep up with the pace, because we played so fast," Swiatek said. "I wanted to be there when Elena starts making mistakes. It's impossible to play such a good level throughout the whole match." Swiatek recovered from 3-5 down in the opening set, sweeping the last four games. She jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second, sandwiching a pair of love service games around a break of Rybakina's serve. But Kazakhstan's Rybakina made her work for it, fending off three break points in the sixth game and saving a pair of match points in the eighth before Swiatek closed it out a game later. "I was playing with intensity and quality," Swiatek said. "I feel good about my game right now and would not change anything." Swiatek has beaten Paolini in all five of their prior meetings with the Italian winning just one set. But Swiatek said she was prepared for a tough final against a player who beat world number two Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals. "Anyone who is there will have been playing well," she said. Before her 6-0, 6-0 Wimbledon final win over Amanda Anisimova last month, Swiatek had been in a trophy drought with her last prior title coming in June 2024 at Roland Garros. Another victory on Monday would be a strong springboard into the US Open, where first-round play starts on August 24. Paolini looked headed to a straight-set victory but failed to serve out her match at 5-4 in the second set and admitted the lapse left her nervous. But I got nervous and thought I would lose the tiebreaker. "I came back onto court in the third set trying not to think about what had happened. You have to keep going."

Chimaev defeats Du Plessis to win UFC title
A record number of strikes and several submission attempts were enough for Khamzat Chimaev to win the UFC Middleweight Championship over Dricus du Plessis by unanimous decision at UFC 319 on Saturday night. By taking all three cards by 50-44 scores, the 31-year-old Russian remained unbeaten at 15-0 despite what was a largely supportive sold-out United Center crowd turning to jeers as the fight went on. 'I am happy, always,' Chimaev said post-fight. 'I never have a game plan, just go in and work like I do in the gym. That guy [Du Plessis] is strong. I couldn't finish. I respect that guy. He is the only champion that would say my name. This guy has big heart.' Chimaev also landed 529 strikes in the match, breaking Max Holloway's UFC record of 447 set in 2021, according to ESPN. His plus-484 striking differential also set a record, breaking Holloway's mark of plus-312 in that same 2021 match against Calvin Klatter. The South African Du Plessis (23-3) was on the canvas within the match's first 10 seconds and the defending champion was on the defensive throughout the match. 'All credit to Khamzat,' Du Plessis, 31, said after the fight. 'He beat me fair and square.' With a crowded middleweight title-contender pool in front of him, Chimaev said he was spending at least one night enjoying his breakthrough win. 'I'm going to go back to the hotel, joke with my friends and enjoy this victory,' Chimaev said. Chimaev, who joined the UFC in 2020 and has previously defeated former champions Kamaru Usman and Robert Whittaker, was rarely threatened against Du Plessis, and despite being denied a finish by the South African he relentlessly took down the defending champion in the opening minute of every round. He converted 12 of 17 takedown attempts and spent 84% of the 25-minute fight in control of Du Plessis, UFC match data show. Du Plessis's only moment to stage a come-from-behind victory came in the final round when he spun his way on top of his tiring opponent and executed a guillotine. However, his attempt was short lived as, Chimaev fought his way out and again regain control of the champion until the final bell. 'The man has incredible control on top,' Du Plessis said. 'It wasn't a matter of strength; it wasn't physical; it was almost like he knew what your next move was. I could almost taste that victory [with the guillotine choke hold], but he beat me fair and square. He was the better man tonight. I'll be coming to get my belt back, but for now, it's his. He deserves it.' The rest of the main card saw Lerone Murphy and Carlos Prates deliver spinning back elbow knockouts of Aaron Pico and Geoff Neal, respectively. England's Murphy (17-0-1) stayed unbeaten in the featherweight division with his win at 3:21 of the first round. Prates, who turns 32 on Sunday, ended his fight with one second remaining in the opening round of their bout in the 170-pound weight class. F-Class shooter Mohsin Nawaz honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's F-Class long-range shooting ace, Mohsin Nawaz, has been conferred the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport and a series of remarkable international achievements. President Asif Ali Zardari announced the honor, which will be officially presented at the Pakistan Day investiture ceremony on March 23, 2026, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. Nawaz, honored in the sports category, joins other distinguished athletes whose accomplishments have elevated Pakistan's profile globally. Hailing from Faisalabad and also a seasoned sports psychologist, Nawaz has been instrumental in putting Pakistan on the world map of competitive shooting. His recent feats include winning silver in the Day One Aggregate and bronze in the 1000-yard event at the 2024 European Long Range Shooting Championship, alongside a top 15 overall ranking. He also secured silver in the 300 yards category at the 2024 F Class Imperial Championship, placing in the top eight overall. These victories brought his international medal tally to 10—making him the first Pakistani civilian to medal in these European categories. Nawaz's breakthrough came in 2023 when he won silver at the European Long Range Shooting Championship, equaling the European record at 800 yards. Earlier, he dominated the 2022 Western Bisley Long Range Championship with three gold and two silver medals, and earned podium finishes at major events in the USA, South Africa, and Europe since 2016. In a testament to his stature, Nawaz holds lifetime memberships with both the National Rifle Association (NRA) UK and USA and is Pakistan's first holder of NRA USA mid and long-range classifications. He also serves as brand ambassador for KAHLES Sports Optics and Peregrine Bullets, and is actively working to develop Pakistan's shooting infrastructure, mentor emerging talent, and advocate for policy reforms in the sport. With eyes now set on the 2026 World Championship, Nawaz's journey continues to inspire a new generation of Pakistani marksmen—cementing his legacy as one of the nation's most accomplished shooters.
