Belfast TradFest is 'top of the traditional map' says Dervish accordionist

BBC News27-07-2025
Thousands of people are expected in Belfast for a week-long celebration of Irish traditional music that one musician said is becoming "top of the map" for the genre.Accordionist Shane Mitchell told BBC News NI that Belfast is a "traditional music hotspot" and the festival has "shot up" in recent years. He plays with Dervish, who will open the festival at the Ulster Hall on Sunday night.Belfast TradFest, now in its seventh year, is running for a week from Sunday until 3 August.Festival artistic director Dónal O'Connor said he looked forward to "bringing people from all backgrounds together to celebrate the very best of our cultural traditions".
What's on at TradFest and where?
Dónal and his team have organised 45 events over the week featuring more than 500 musicians across 33 of Belfast's venues, pubs and cultural spaces."From world-class concerts and intimate sessions to céilís, workshops, talks and family-friendly events, there truly is something for everyone," he said. This includes masterclasses in Irish music and dancing, concerts, pub sessions and a highland piping competition. Passengers getting the train at Grand Central Station or people visiting the Titanic Quarter may even get caught in the middle of a pop-up céilí.
TradFest begins with a free celebration of traditional Irish and Scottish music in the form of an outdoor céilí at the Titanic Slipways between 13:00 and 17:00 BST. The event hopes to attract more than 10,000 people with face painting, live traditional, piping and ukulele performances and interactive céilí dancing. The focus then switches to the Ulster Hall at 19:00 for a collaborative concert by seasoned Irish traditional group Dervish, contemporary group NOTIFY and the Irish Concertina Orchestra.Irish band Dervish has been at the forefront of the traditional music scene since 1989 when four of its founding members met at a pub session in Sligo.NOTIFY are a six-piece contemporary instrumental ensemble whose new album features 40 musicians under the age of 18 from the Irish Concertina Orchestra .
Dervish co-founder and accordionist Shane Mitchell told BBC News NI he is looking forward to returning to the "Irish traditional hotspot" that is Belfast."Belfast is a great city, really fun to visit. It was one of the first places we played at the old Belfast folk festival, 36 years ago," he said.Although this is his first TradFest, he said he admired how the festival had "shot up so quickly".He said fans attending Sunday's concert could expect "some vintage Dervish tracks" and a uniquely "Belfast setlist"."With a mixture of age groups and generations, it should be a very special event", he said.
Different generations 'what it's all about'
The band are staying in Belfast for the week to help lead the master workshops running during the day at Ulster University Belfast. "It's very unusual for us to stay more than one night in any place which gives an indication of how much we respect Belfast TradFest as a festival," he said."If you see us around come up and say hello and if you're a musician come and have a tune. That's the spirit of Belfast TradFest...it's very much the top of the traditional map."
After years of honing his accordion skills, Shane said he would like to pass on "different bits and pieces" to the younger musicians at TradFest. "I value the phrasing, styles and ornamentation I picked up from older musicians," he said."That's what Tradfest is all about. Different generations of musicians from different age groups."Shane's advice for younger musicians at the festival is to "get out and play as many tunes, learn from as many people as you can and enjoy yourselves".
'Unbeatable atmosphere'
Maeve O'Donnell has been playing the uilleann pipes for 12 years. She said Belfast TradFest was "always a highlight of the summer".She will be teaching at the workshops, performing at the O'Mealy piping concert on Thursday evening and playing in sessions around Belfast."I am especially excited to see Dervish, Moxie, and Kinnaris Quintet to name but a few," she said."I can't wait to be surrounded by great music, great company, and the unbeatable TradFest atmosphere."
'Thriving trad scene'
Sinéad McKenna is teaching fiddle workshops and performing at the Sean Maguire tribute concert. "I think it's a fantastic week bringing people internationally to Belfast", she said."I am so happy people are getting to first-hand witness and experience the thriving traditional music scene that we have in Belfast."

Pamela Anderson receives a kiss from new beau Liam Neeson before he feeds her popcorn as romance heats up

and her Naked Gun leading man Liam Neeson showcased their undeniable chemistry in a new promo for their hit reboot titled: 'This could be us but you playing...' In it, the 58-year-old Baywatch alum beamed with delight as she rested her head on the 73-year-old Oscar nominee's shoulder, and he kissed her head. Liam also dropped popcorn directly into Pamela's mouth in yet another show of candid intimacy. The flirty spot came three days after the coy couple shared the same $22 tube of 'Basic' lip balm from her company Sonsie Skin while appearing on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. 'The question that I'm not asking the two of you tonight is what's going on between the two of you,' host Andy Cohen declared. 'But I do just want to say as a very old friend of [Neeson's]. All of your friends are very much stanning this relationship, as the kids say.' 'Awww,' Anderson smiled. The 57-year-old Bravo exec then addressed the Northern Irishman's son Daniel Jack Neeson, who was seated in the 'Oprah' chair of the studio audience: 'Right, Danny?' 'Yeah,' the 28-year-old De Nada Tequila co-founder smiled and agreed. Andy has previously stated he believed Liam might be ready for love again after losing his wife of 15 years, Natasha Richardson, to traumatic brain injury she suffered in a 2009 skiing accident. Last Friday, the late British actress' sister Joely Richardson reacted to their surprising romance by commenting on the 15-time Playboy cover girl's Instagram post. The British 60-year-old showed her approval by posting seven red heart emojis. Cohen also asked Anderson and Neeson what they found 'sweetest' about each other. 'He's so kind and generous,' The Last Showgirl star gushed. The 6ft4in action star - who loves Pamela's homebaked sourdough bread - answered 'her spirit' before adding that 'she's a giggler like me, and I love that.' When Andy asked Anderson if she had seen Liam chop wood before, she replied: 'No but I bought him an axe. I sent him an what I was hoping for! It's a hint.' The flirty spot came three days after the coy couple shared the same $22 tube of 'Basic' lip balm from her company Sonsie Skin while appearing on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live The pair looked like every bit the blended family as they posed with their two sons - including Micheál Richardson, 30; (with Richardson) and son Brandon Lee, 29; and Dylan Lee, 27; (with first ex-husband Tommy Lee) - at the New York premiere on July 28. Liam and Pamela are the happiest they've looked in years, as a source first confirmed to People: 'They're enjoying each other's company. It's a budding romance in the early stages. It's sincere, and it's clear they're smitten with each other.' Anderson portrays grieving sister Beth Davenport opposite Neeson's Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr. in Akiva Schaffer's slapstick comedy continuation, which has earned $36M back from its $42M budget since opening worldwide last Thursday. The Naked Gun is 'certified fresh' with a 90% critic approval rating (out of 258 reviews) and a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also features Danny Huston, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Busta Rhymes, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, and Eddie Yu. Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker wrote and directed the original trilogy spanning 1988-1994, which amassed a total $476.4M at the global box office, following the short-lived ABC series Police Squad in 1982.

Line of Duty star says people ‘jumped to conclusions' about Kneecap

Adrian Dunbar, who stars as Ted Hastings in Line of Duty, has defended the rap trio Kneecap, saying that people "jumped to conclusions" about the group amidst recent controversies. Kneecap has faced several show cancellations and was recently banned from entering Hungary, which they attribute to a "smear campaign" due to their support for Palestine. One of Kneecap's members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara), was charged with a terrorism offence in May for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a London gig – a charge he denies. The group has been criticised for alleged comments made at gigs, including "kill your local MP", but has since apologised and denied supporting Hamas or Hezbollah. Dunbar, who recently attended a Kneecap gig with his daughter, described the Belfast trio as 'a band of good musicians' who 'make great music' and promote the Irish language.
