Mobile County Commission OKs letter of intent to further explore Jubilee Park

According to a news release from the county, commission members approved the letter on Monday, April 14, for the $60 million project, which officials called a 'regional destination for sports, leisure and hospitality.'
'With Monday's affirmative County Commission vote to proceed with a letter of intent for Jubilee Park, we're one step closer to seeing this exciting project become a reality,' Mobile Sports Authority Executive Director Danny Corte said.
'And with a much-needed indoor sports facility also called for in the plans, we envision hosting many more court-based tournaments, which will, in turn, generate substantial economic impact for the Mobile area, not to mention what a great asset it will be for our local athletes.'
Right now, Jubilee Park is proposed to be built at the Mobile County Sportsplex at Halls Mill Road. It would include a 20-acre outdoor and indoor water park with a zipline, an indoor multi-use sports complex, walking trails, retail, dining, a public park, and RV and bungalow lodging.
The release said the outdoor water park would be roughly 20 acres, the indoor water park would be 15,000 square feet, and the indoor sports complex would range from 60,000 to 100,000 square feet.
There are also set to be up to 100 RV sites as well as 30-50 bungalows, with plans for hotel expansion and further phases.
'We're grateful for LSAR's willingness to invest in our community. Moving forward with this letter of intent allows LSAR to proceed with the necessary studies and planning,' District 2 Commissioner Connie Hudson said.
'This project has the potential to transform the already busy and growing Sportsplex into a year-round destination that boosts tourism, supports jobs, and improves quality of life for residents.'
According to the release, LSAR estimates that Jubilee Park could bring up to 500,000 visitors a year and support 300,000 construction jobs.
LSAR officials also said it would support year-round staff and roughly 400 seasonal jobs.

ALL ABOARD: Amtrak returns to Mobile after 20 years
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A homecoming 20 years in the making, as city and state leaders gathered in downtown Mobile Saturday to welcome Amtrak's special arrival. Amtrak's Mardi Gras Service, the first passenger train to return to the Port City in more than two decades, made its first run from New Orleans to Mobile. This historic launch was recognized the true Mardi Gras way — with music, bands, and plenty of celebration. 'It was a big celebration the entire way here,' Amtrak President Rodger Harris said. 'A couple of years ago, we were concerned that, you know, maybe we didn't have enough planned for these festivities, but it's been thousands and thousands of people everywhere we stopped,' Harris said regarding the big community turnout for Amtrak. After the festivities in Mobile, News 5 got the chance to ride along on the return trip to New Orleans. All future riders will have the choice between Coach and Business class seats, with beautiful views of the Gulf Coast throughout the journey. The train makes four stops in Mississippi, with a full trip taking about three and a half to four hours. Tickets start at $15 each way for adults. Alabama Congressman Shomari Figures said he hopes to see the service continue to grow across the Gulf Coast. 'We want to first and foremost, make sure that this line is as successful as it can possibly be,' Figures said. 'Making sure we're supporting it as a community, making sure that we're doing what we can and support it federally.' 'Making sure that the cities, not just in Mobile, but every city that's impacted by this between here in New Orleans are doing their part,' Figures continued.
