Bicester charity game raises thousands in honour of fire victims

BBC News20-07-2025
A football match honouring two firefighters and a member of the public killed during a fire at a business park has raised thousands of pounds for charity.Ardley United took on a team of Oxford United legends on Sunday to raise money for the Firefighters Charity, in memory of those who died during the fire at Bicester Motion on 15 May.The blaze claimed the lives of firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, and father-of-two Dave Chester, 57.Ardley United chairman Ian Feaver said the match was about "bringing the community together in honour of those three people".
He said the "awful" incident had "really knocked the community sideways"."We just thought that as the most senior football club in the area, we need to do something and give people something positive to look forward to whilst raising some money for charity," he said.Mr Feaver added that he had received a message of thanks for organising the match from Ms Logan's family."It just really brought it home to me and stopped me in my tracks," he said.
Following a minute's silence and a minute's applause, the match kicked off at 13:00 BST.Oxfordshire's chief firefighter Rob MacDougall, who emotionally announced the trio's deaths in a statement to media the day after the blaze, was at the game.He said: "It has been really difficult but it's been amazing to see how people have come together to support everyone."It just shows the community coming together, it shows what they meant to everyone and what a strong community we are."Days like today are really special."
Several Oxford United legends, including three players who secured the club's return to the Football League at Wembley in 2010, featured in the game.Ahead of the match, James Constable, who scored the second goal in the win over York City 15 years ago, said he was "slightly more nervous than during my playing days".He said: "Its obviously for a great cause, so you never mind doing it for that and to just be around some of the players you used to play with is special anyway."For us as ex-players, anything that we can do to help support the families that have lost loved ones is special and for us to do something as simple as pull on a pair of boots and run around for 90 minutes is good."
The match ended in a 2-1 win for the Oxford legends, with Alfie Potter and Chris Hackett netting for the U's, while Dan Bone scored Ardley's solitary goal.Following the game, the club estimated the event had raised about £8,000 for the Firefighters Charity.

Is Birmingham City v Ipswich Town on TV? Channel, kick-off time and how to watch Championship opener tonight

Ipswich Town travel to Birmingham City in the Championship opener tonight as both sides compete for promotion to the Premier League this season. Kieran McKenna 's side are the favourites to win the Championship and go straight back up after suffering relegation last term. But Blues, with Tom Brady part of the ownership group, are tipped by many to go up after promotion from League 1, with their new documentary 'Built in Birmingham' detailing their ambitious project. Both sides should reveal their promotion credentials early in what promises to be a lively atmosphere at St Andrew's, with the likes of Southampton, Sheffield United, Coventry, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Norwich and newcomers Wrexham all competing to go up this term. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the match. When is Birmingham City v Ipswich Town? Former City boss Taylor named head coach of Liverpool women

MANCHESTER, England, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Gareth Taylor has been appointed head coach of Liverpool's women's team, the club announced on Friday, five months after being sacked by Manchester City. The 52-year-old coached City for five years, leading them to FA Cup and League Cup triumphs, and a narrow second-place finish to Chelsea in the Women's Super League in 2024 that was decided by goal difference. But he was fired by City in March, just five days before their League Cup final against Chelsea, with the club citing the team's underperformance. City went on to finish fourth in the WSL this past season while Liverpool were seventh. "Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of (Liverpool), and I am really looking forward to the task ahead," Taylor said. "Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way." Andy O'Boyle, managing director of Liverpool's women's programme, hailed the appointment, saying Taylor "has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams and his ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none." Taylor will take charge of Saturday's closed-door friendly against Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath. The WSL season kicks off on September 6.

Preston boss 'feels' for injured Thompson

Preston North End start the new season without summer signing Jordan Thompson who will be missing for the next couple of months following ankle about the injury, boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's another couple of months for Jordan. I think I said at the time that he had a misdiagnosis after the final game of last season [for Stoke City]."He has had an operation now to sort it out and is in recovery which is hard for him because when you come to a new club, you want to start well and it is only when he got to a certain point that he realised something was wrong, so I feel for him."Robbie Brady is also missing for a couple of weeks with a calf injury while Brad Potts will be assessed ahead of tomorrow's opening-day trip to QPR (15:00 BST).Ahead of the game, Heckingbottom added: "I want to get going. Once these league games get underway, that is when you start getting proper feedback about the players. "With the teams that have come up and come down, I have not got a clue how this Championship [season] is going to go. Our expectation for every game is to go and try to win."Debuts could be handed to summer signings, Daniel Iversen (Leicester), Odel Offiah (Brighton), Pol Valentin and Michael Smith (Sheffield Wednesday), Thierry Small (Charlton), Daniel Jebbison (Bournemouth, loan), Andrija Vukcevic (FC Juarez).Heckingbottom said he was "delighted" by the business the Lilywhites have done this summer - click here to listen to his full interview via BBC Sounds.
