The Best Makeup for Hot and Humid Weather, According to a Professional Makeup Artist

The Best Makeup for Hot and Humid Weather, According to a Professional Makeup Artist

Summer vacations are for exploring tropical destinations, lounging on sun-soaked beaches, and indulging in freshly caught seafood. Hot and humid locations, though, usually cause you to immediately sweat off any makeup you've put on. I want to look my best when I'm traveling, but all it takes is five minutes in the island sun to have my mascara running down my face. To help create a summer makeup routine that can withstand high temperatures all day—and night—long, I turned to Sephora's beauty director and professional makeup artist David Razzano for his best tips for heatproof vacation makeup.
The best makeup for hot, humid weather is long-lasting and practically weightless, allowing you to look and feel your best without needing to wear a ton of heavy products or worrying about it sliding right off. Razzano recently did my makeup using his tried-and-true warm-weather products and walked me through his best tricks for applying makeup that actually lasts. Below, a guide to lightweight, working-for-you makeup that will hold up in any hot and humid destination, whether you're island hopping around Greece, checking into a Caribbean resort, or just riding the New York City subway.
Before actually applying any makeup, prep your face with the right skincare that will help your products last longer. Step one: 'Get yourself a great hydrating spray,' says Razzano. 'Dont slug and slather because it's just going to feel really heavy.' A lightweight spray, like Summer Friday's Jet Lag hydration mist, added a nice base layer of moisture to my face while also cooling it down. 'Humidity is a great instance for a primer,' he says. Razzano added the One Size Secure the Sweat waterproof mattifying primer with his fingers to help the rest of my makeup lay nicely and stay put.
After some quick skin prep, it's time for the makeup. 'Use your concealer first because you don't want to put your liquids [makeup] on top of your powder—that's the rule of thumb,' says Razzano. Tower 28's Swipe All-Over hydrating serum concealer helps hide blemishes and brighten up my tired under eyes. Just when I thought Razzano was going to pull out a tinted moisturizer or a lightweight foundation, he surprised me. 'When you're in a hot and humid environment, nothing tops powder foundation—even if you have dry skin,' he says. A powder foundation? I thought this would feel heavy and look cake-y on my skin—but it was quite the opposite. I couldn't believe how weightless it felt on the skin, all while evening out my skin tone and blurring imperfections. 'A big, loose brush is going to give you a sheer coverage, while a smaller, compact brush will give a heavier coverage,' he says. After applying the powder foundation, Razzano recommends locking it in with another spritz of Summer Friday's hydrating mist—a.k.a. my newest summer essential.
Razzano is applying Milk Makeup's Waterproof Rise Lifting and Lengthening mascara on commerce editor Meaghan Kenny
'A bronzer is a great way to slowly add color back to the face,' says Razzano. He applied LYS Beauty's No Limits matte bronzer to the high points of my face that naturally get kissed by the sun—the top of my forehead, cheeks, and nose. This gave me a bronzy glow that's perfect for vacation. After adding a lightweight, clear brow gel, Razzano moved onto the eyes. He curled my lashes and applied a waterproof mascara. 'Your lashes are much more likely to fall and go straight when the air itself is heavier,' he says. Milk Makeup's Waterproof Rise Lifting and Lengthening mascara proved to be the star of the show. This was the product I nearly grabbed out of his hand to see what it was—my lashes have never looked that long or that full. And when I'm sweating in the heat or taking a dip in the hotel pool, I won't have to worry about this mascara running or flaking.
Kenny is wearing Cay Skin's lip balm with SPF
'The final step in the complexion that I would say is really important is a good setting spray,' says Razzano. He chose One Size's aptly named On' Til Dawn mattifying waterproof setting spray to lock in the makeup. And finally, a little pop of color: 'If you want something really easy, think of a tinted lip balm,' he says. Cay Skin's lip balm added a nice rosy pink tint to my lips and provides SPF 30 protection. Face sunscreen is a part of my daily skincare routine, but I never think to add SPF protection to my lips. It's safe to say this lip balm is now a must-have in my beach bag for on-the-go touch-ups. And voila! It was the perfect amount of makeup—it left me feeling confident and put together, while still being quick and looking effortless. And to my surprise, hours later, my makeup was still going strong—no creasing, melting, or caking in sight.
I've already adopted Razzano's heatproof makeup routine and will be wearing it constantly this summer, including on a trip to Scottsdale this July and long days spent down the Jersey Shore. You'll find these water-, sweat-, and heat-proof essentials in my makeup bag all summer long.

I Tried Dozens of Shampoos—These Were the Only Ones That Fixed My Oily Hair

We've all heard people wax poetic about how not washing their hair every day has changed their lives. If you have oily hair, all you can really do is nod, smile, and congratulate them on their revelation. Truth is, when you have a scalp that churns out enough sebum to make your strands look greasy and lifeless just hours after you've shampooed, it feels like you have no choice but to cleanse every single day. 'Like our skin, our scalp naturally produces oil at varying degrees depending on the person. When a scalp produces oil, it moves down the hair shaft, creating a noticeable oily look,' says Tom Smith, the creative director of Evo Hair. Sure, dry shampoo can help, but that only disguises the issue rather than solving it. What if we told you that there's a solution that can get to the root of the problem? The best shampoos for oily hair are designed to cut through the grease and buildup. One rinse of the right formula can give your hair a new lease on life, ensuring your mane retains volume, restores movement, and remains oil-free for beyond 24 hours. After speaking with Smith, testing formulas on our own oily scalps, and analyzing customer reviews, we determined the 12 best shampoos for oily hair. Keep scrolling to discover your newest shower caddy staples. Apple cider vinegar has long been touted as a staple ingredient for detoxing your strands. Fekkai mixed ACV with ginger extract, pomegranate seed oil, vitamins, and more to nourish your hair as oils are washed away. It's gentle enough but gets the job done. I only use a tiny bit of it, and it's more than enough!' Hårklinikken is all about improving the hair by supporting the scalp. This shampoo from the Danish brand is formulated to break down excess sebum and maintain the health of the scalp's microbiome simultaneously. Your hair will be clean and fresh, but never stripped. Reviewers report that the product solved their itchy scalp issues as well. Key ingredients: Burdock root, glycosides How to use: Wet hair, apply to scalp, massage for 30 seconds, rinse Hårklinikken rating: 4.7/5 stars A Hårklinikken reviewer says: 'I love this shampoo! My scalp has stopped any itching but doesn't feel tight, and my hair never feels or looks greasy.' Kérastase's shampoo rids your hair of all oil and build-up without leaving your hair feeling stripped bare. Made with fine hair in mind, it nourishes from roots to ends and leaves strands soft and shiny. Size: 8.5 fl oz Key ingredients: Amino acids, vitamin B6 How to use: Wet hair, massage into scalp and strands, rinse, repeat one more time while focusing on mid-lengths and ends Sephora rating: 3.9/5 stars A Sephora reviewer said: 'I have oily scalp and had been using this since giving birth. This shampoo has helped my hair feel so soft, and scalp is still fresh after a day of not washing it. I've finally found my go-to shampoo!' If body and shine are what you're looking for, Ouai delivers that in one bottle. As one reviewer puts it, 'Your hair needs that reset from all the crap we put on our scalps, and this is the product to take you back to your natural shine and bounce.' Size: 10 fl oz Key ingredient: Apple cider vinegar How to use: Wet hair, squeeze out excess water, apply a quarter-size amount to scalp before letting it sit for 1–3 minutes, rinse Amazon rating: 4.6/5 stars An ELLE editor says: 'While I may not struggle with oily hair, I always reach for my Ouai Detox Shampoo after a busy weekend filled with hair styling, re-styling, dry shampoo, and hairspray. With just one wash, any oil and product buildup is completely gone, leaving my hair feeling oh so fresh and clean.'—Emma Aerin Becker, associate beauty e-commerce writer If you want your scalp to feel squeaky clean and your hair to smell like a dream, Cécred's Clarifying Shampoo & Scalp Scrub is your girl. This is the one shampoo I can always rely on to reset my scalp and get me back to cleansing my hair every few days instead of every 24 hours. I know that once I go in with this formula, any buildup or excess oils on my face will wash down the drain.' —Carol Lee, beauty writer Clarifying shampoos don't need to be packed with a slew of fancy ingredients for them to be effective. Sans any sulfates, Evo's formula tackles stubborn dirt and grease, making each wash better than the last. Size: 10.1 fl oz Key ingredients: Peppermint oil How to use: Wet hair, massage into scalp and strands, rinse Amazon rating: 4.2/5 stars An Amazon reviewer said: 'I asked my stylist to recommend something cruelty-free, that would be okay for my colored hair, and that would leave my scalp without any buildup. Definitely a fan!' Aside from targeting greasy hair, this gem from Ogx alleviates dry, itchy scalp. The shampoo is gentle enough for daily use and costs less than your typical clarifying shampoos. Size: 13 fl oz Key ingredients: Tea tree, peppermint oil, witch hazel How to use: Wet hair, massage product into scalp and strands, rinse Amazon rating: 4.5/5 stars An Amazon reviewer said: 'My hair recently started getting very oily again. This has definitely helped calm it down. I can actually go two days without washing my hair again.' Crack open this bottle and your bathroom will smell like luxury. This shampoo has every type of mint you can think of—peppermint, spearmint, and rosemary mint—to soothe the scalp and purify the hair from root to tip. Size: 8.5 fl oz Key ingredients: Rosemary, peppermint, and spearmint How to use: Wet hair, massage product into scalp and strands, rinse Nordstrom rating: 4.6/5 stars A Nordstrom reviewer said: 'My all time favorite shampoo. Gentle yet removes all the product build up. Wonderful, invigorating fragrance.' You'll be surprised (and freaked out) at how much gunk and oil can accumulate under your protective styles. The African Pride Braid & Scalp Cleansing Rinse is the antidote. Formulated with micellar water to break down dirt, as well as castor oil, coconut oil, and peppermint oil for nourishment and scalp stimulation, your hair and scalp get the TLC they need. Size: 12 oz Key ingredients: Black castor oil, micellar water, coconut oil, peppermint oil How to use: Adjust braids or weave to expose scalp, use nozzle to directly apply product onto scalp before massaging it in, rinse Amazon rating: 4.5/5 stars An ELLE editor says: 'I never want to return to a life before this scalp rinse was introduced to me. This is what I use before, during, and after my protective styles, mainly because I know my hair is getting a thorough cleanse while being properly nourished. Micellar water eliminates the gunk, and a blend of oils imparts moisture.'—Nerisha Penrose, beauty commerce editor Sachajuan's shampoo treats your scalp just as well as you treat your face. With salicylic acid, your scalp gets a good clean that gets rid of dandruff and dryness. Size: 8.4 fl oz Key ingredients: Salicylic acid How to use: Wet hair, massage into scalp and hair, leave in for 1–2 minutes before rinsing Dermstore rating: 4.5/5 stars A Dermstore reviewer said: 'This is the only shampoo I keep coming back to for the past 20 or so years. Nothing compares to the clean, bouncy feel of my hair, but the main attraction is the absolutely delicious fragrance. Any time I hug someone, they exclaim how good my hair smells. It cheers me up every time I wash my hair.' Good hair starts with a healthy scalp, which is why the nozzle on this bottle is a godsend. Using the nozzle, apply the product directly to your scalp and lather it down your strands to remove any build-up from root to tip. Size: 16.9 fl ozKey ingredient: Aloe How to use: Wet hair, apply directly onto scalp, massage product into scalp and strands, rinse Amazon rating: 4.5/5 starsAn Amazon reviewer said: 'My hair usually gets really greasy, and this product helps my hair feel squeaky clean. I used to have issues with my scalp smelling weird, but this liquid shampoo really helped me with that. I don't use this daily though, because I feel like it dries out your scalp. So I only use it once my hair is really greasy.' If you're yearning for fresh hair that lasts, Oribe's Serene Scalp Oil Control Shampoo may be the shampoo for you. The brand's biome balancing complex regulates and rebalances the scalp's microbiome to reduce sebum production and promote a healthy scalp. Key ingredients: Rosebay extract, green marine algae, biomimetic amino acid How to use: Wet hair, massage into scalp and hair, rinse Amazon rating: 4.2/5 An Amazon reviewer said: 'The Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Shampoo and Conditioner are game-changers! They leave my scalp feeling clean and refreshed without over-drying, and my hair stays oil-free for much longer. The scent is luxurious, and my hair feels soft, light, and healthy. Worth every penny!' Tom Smith is the creative director of Evo Hair. Because the hair has so much build-up, you should opt for shampoos that can properly cleanse greasy hair while also being gentle enough to maintain the hair's health. Smith says, 'I recommend using a gentle but deep cleansing shampoo. If you have oily hair, shampooing the hair properly is also essential. Shampoo twice and make sure you work it into an even lather on the scalp. Rinse for about 30 seconds longer than you think you need to so that all the product really washes out.' 'Cheaper drugstore shampoos tend to use low-grade silicones and waxes to make your hair feel really soft, but what these ingredients actually do is build upon the hair and suffocate the cuticle, which makes the hair feel slimy over time,' Smith adds. The number of times you wash your hair depends on your routine and hair type. 'Some people's scalps produce more oil than others, so it can take a lot of trial and error to figure out the best schedule for you. It is ok to wash your hair every day if you need to, as long as you're using good quality products that aren't going to leave a residue on your hair,' Smith says. As a leading publisher of fashion, lifestyle, and beauty content, is committed to highlighting the best products in various categories by personally testing the latest and most innovative products, interviewing countless experts, and vetting customer-loved items. For this piece, ELLE editors spoke to a hair expert, tested formulas, and combed through customer reviews to find the best shampoos for oily hair.

I'm an American living in Mexico. I love it, but that doesn't mean every day is perfect.

In November, I traded the hustle and bustle of city life in Newark, New Jersey, for the tropical climate and beautiful beaches of Tulum, Mexico. I've never been happier. Even though I've lived here for less than a year, I don't think I'll ever move back to the US — but that doesn't mean every day is perfect. Here are some of my favorite and least favorite things about living in Tulum. I've enjoyed the lower cost of living My cost of living in Tulum is much cheaper than it was in New Jersey, in part because of the conversion rates between USD and Mexican pesos ($1 equates to about 19 pesos). In Newark, I rented a two-bedroom apartment for $2,100 a month, but now, in La Veleta, I pay about $600 a month for a one-bedroom apartment. I've found that my groceries are cheaper too, especially when I shop locally. In the US, I would spend about $150 a week on groceries, compared to about $80 a week in Tulum. My life in Tulum feels far more peaceful and relaxed As a model, content creator, and host, I worked 12 hours a day while living in New Jersey. Although I was filming, editing, applying to campaigns, and answering emails nonstop, I was barely making enough income to afford my rent, groceries, and bills. If I didn't pick up enough jobs, I wouldn't be able to cover my living expenses. I felt stuck. Meanwhile, I've found that the lower cost of living in Tulum enables me to work less. I can take my time creating and posting content, edit on a consistent but relaxed schedule, and listen to my body's needs. Although I don't have quite as many opportunities in Tulum — yet — I enjoy my job more now because I have the free time to be creative and build a greater appreciation for what I do. Outside work, I've also enjoyed participating in Tulum's active wellness community through yoga classes and meditation circles. I love being surrounded by so many people who seem focused on inner growth, and I have found it to be very inspiring. I feel more connected to nature, too Living in Newark, I was used to luxury apartments and high-rise buildings lining the streets. Meanwhile, in Tulum, nature feels like part of my experience everywhere I go, from riding down Avenida Tulum to eating at outdoor cafés. Trees, vines, and other plants surround my apartment, so I feel connected to nature even when I'm home. I also like that the beaches in Tulum seem to have clearer water and appear much cleaner than the popular ones I visited in New Jersey. However, I miss having access to all of the same products I used in the US Since moving to Tulum, I've realized that I took a lot of massive stores in the US for granted — it's harder to find one-stop shops filled with tons of options here. Although my groceries are cheaper now, I have to shop at more locations to get everything I need. In the US, I could go to one big supermarket. It's also much harder to stock up on my beloved makeup and beauty products. Although Amazon ships here, there isn't a Sephora in Tulum, so I have to travel an hour to Playa del Carmen to get things like Fenty Beauty foundation and my preferred edge control and mousse for my hair. However, for most other essentials like toilet paper or protein powder, I've just switched to brands that are easily available locally. I've learned to adapt to the different power grids and septic systems Tulum's infrastructure can be more inconsistent than what I was used to in Newark, in part due to differences in the city's septic systems and electricity grids. For example, in some areas, toilet paper shouldn't be flushed because it can clog the pipes. In general, I've noticed the toilets here tend to clog more easily than they did back home. Additionally, I've gotten used to frequent power outages (about three times a month) due to maintenance or storms. Fortunately, though, my power usually returns within a few hours. Friends and others who've recently moved to Tulum have told me they've dealt with similar issues. It's not ideal, but I've learned to adapt. When these things happen, I either wait for the services to return or go to a local café for a few hours. Still, there's nowhere else I'd rather be Despite the challenges, the peace, beauty, and community make living in Tulum worth it for me. I've learned so much about myself since moving here, and I'm excited to continue building my brand and increasing my income. Someday, I'd like to move to another country that's even farther away from the US, but for now, I think Tulum is perfect for me and my journey. Tulum doesn't just feel like another adventure — it feels like home.

Tower 28 Beauty Partners With ‘CEO Of Blush' Toni Bravo For Its Landmark First Creator Collaboration: ‘It Felt Like A Perfect Match'

For the first time ever, Tower 28 Beauty is taking part in a creator collaboration, partnering with fellow Angeleno and content creator Toni Bravo to release two limited edition blush shades. Bravo—known as the 'CEO of Blush'—is from Long Beach; Tower 28, named after a lifeguard tower in Santa Monica and founded by Amy Liu, is proud of its Los Angeles roots. 'It came about really organically,' Liu—who is not just founder but also CEO of the company—tells me of the partnership with Bravo. 'Toni's been such a champion of the brand, and she had this real story of not being able to find certain shades, even with her massive blush collection. She already loved our formula and had such a thoughtful eye for what was missing in the market.' 'On top of that, she has a deep, authentic connection with her community, and that's something we really value,' Liu continues. 'She's all about bold pigment, inclusivity and joy—so it felt like a perfect match.' The product, called the GetSet™ Matte Powder Blush, launched on July 22 at and and retails for $22. The two shades are Downtown Daiquiri, a bright coral blush, and Sunset Shirley, a warm raspberry, and it makes sense that Bravo, a beauty and lifestyle creator based in L.A., was the perfect fit: she rose to internet fame with a viral blush video that cemented her as a prominent voice for people of color in the beauty industry, as previously reported on by Forbes; she has amassed more than 850,000 followers across various platforms. 'It's been a year and a half of learning, discovery and, honestly, so much fun,' Bravo tells me of her collaboration with the brand. 'Tower 28 reached out to my management team to propose the idea, and when I got the call—I couldn't say yes quick enough.' The collaboration started with mood boards, she adds, 'and really spent time to speak to the why behind the shades,' she says, adding that creating 'a whole world' for both Downtown Daiquiri (inspired by Bravo's time living in downtown L.A.) and Sunset Shirley (inspired by both Sunset Boulevard and her love for a Shirley Temple) was her favorite part of the process. From there, they moved into samples and testing, 'really honing into creating two dream shades,' she says, 'not just for myself, but for everyone.' 'The launch and support have truly felt immeasurable,' Bravo says. 'I am so excited that folks love these two shades as much as I do.' As Liu puts it, when it comes to being the 'CEO of Blush,' Bravo 'earned that title,' Liu tells me. 'Toni is a true blush connoisseur and knows exactly what she's looking for. She's not just collecting blush for the aesthetic—she really understands the craft behind it and is incredibly intentional about how color wears on different skintones. That passion and precision is exactly what makes her the CEO in our book.' Bravo has a collection of over 100 blushes, but couldn't find the exact shade she was looking for—so enter Tower 28, a brand Bravo tells me 'was one of the very first brands I adored when I began my makeup journey again as an adult.' 'They have always felt beginner-friendly and approachable,' she says. The blushes promise not just vibrant color but also the ability to blur and smooth any texture, with built-in shine control and sweat-proof capabilities. It's the first-ever setting blush, Liu explains, 'which means you get the pigment of a matte powder blush with the staying power of a setting powder.' (Liu is also quick to point out to me that the blush is safe for sensitive skin—a pillar Tower 28 was founded on. 'Powder blushes tend to accentuate imperfections, but ours blurs them,' she says.) Bravo tells me that, before this product, she'd never tried a self-setting blush before, 'and now I can't go back,' she says. 'Blush is having such a big moment right now,' Liu says. 'I love how people are really leaning into color and having fun with how they wear it.' Liu says the brand had been fans of Bravo's 'forever,' and she did a blush masterclass with the company earlier this year when it launched the first seven shades. Bravo tells me their collaboration—which is also her first with a beauty brand, as well as being Tower 28's first with a content creator—felt 'incredibly serendipitous,' she says, adding that the collaboration 'just made sense.' 'I love how full circle it has all felt,' she says. 'To have billboards with my face on it all over Los Angeles—and even in my hometown of Long Beach—has been a dream and a half.' Will Tower 28 do more collaborations like this in the future? It's a distinct possibility, Liu tells me. 'We're always exploring ways to connect with our community and bring fresh perspectives to the table,' she says. 'This collaboration opened up a whole new chapter for us, and it was such a rewarding experience. For now, we're just so excited to get these new shades into people's hands, but we're definitely keeping the door open for more thoughtful, meaningful collabs in the future.'
