Opposition slams govt over 'politically motivated' sentences in Punjab Assembly
A charged session unfolded in the Punjab Assembly as opposition lawmakers lashed out at the government over what they termed 'scripted' and 'politically motivated' sentences awarded to PTI lawmakers, workers, and supporters by anti-terrorism courts in the May 9 cases.
Deputy Opposition Leader Muhammad Moeenuddin Riaz led the criticism, declaring that the ATC verdicts not only undermined justice but also deepened the political divide.
'Try whatever you can, but you cannot erase Imran Khan from people's hearts,' he said, accusing the government of prioritising political vendettas over pressing national issues like flood management.
He further alleged that public funds were being spent on orchestrating cases against PTI members instead of addressing ground realities.
In protest, the opposition staged a token boycott of the proceedings, briefly exiting the House.
Responding to the protest, PML-N's Chief Whip Rana Muhammad Arshad condemned the PTI's stance, questioning their moral authority to speak of justice after the May 9 violence. He accused the opposition of supporting sedition and undermining state institutions.
Treasury MPA Amjad Ali Javed raised a separate issue, highlighting the misuse of Section 97-A of the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2016 by a traffic warden and a police official. He claimed the section had yet to be officially enforced and demanded action. The matter was referred to the relevant committee.
Javed also urged the government to fulfill its 3% job quota for special persons, claiming implementation remains insufficient. In a similar vein, Treasury MPA Sohail Khan Zahid requested that agriculture taxes be waived in flood-hit areas.
IPP's Muhammad Shoaib Siddiqui called on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to address poor drainage conditions in Lahore's Railway Colony and adjacent areas following recent rains.
Upon returning from their walkout, opposition members attempted to resume speeches against the ATC sentences, but the chair did not grant permission. This led to further sloganeering from the opposition benches.
As tensions escalated, a lawmaker pointed out the lack of quorum. With insufficient members present to continue proceedings, the chair adjourned the session until 2 pm on July 28.

ECP unseats PTI lawmakers convicted by ATC over May 9 riots
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday disqualified Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary, National Assembly Member (MNA) Mohammad Ahmed Chattha, and Punjab Assembly Member (MPA) Ahmad Khan Bhachar, following their conviction by anti-terrorism courts (ATCs). The ECP disqualified the three lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under Article 63 (1) H of the Constitution, according to two notifications issued here. Following the disqualification, the ECP declared three seats vacant, which would be filled through by-elections. "ln pursuance of order dated 22.07.2025 passed by the Court of Muhammad Naeem Sheikh, Special Judge, Anti-Terrorism Court Sargodha, in case No.2606/SC/20.06.2023, Trial No.1003fl/ATC/26.08.2024 titled "The State Vs Zafar Ullah Khan & others" whereby Mohammad Ahmed Chattha, Member National Assembly from Constituency No. NA-66 Wazirabad and Ahmad Khan, Member Provincial Assembly of Punjab from Constituency No. PP-87 Mianwali-lll have been convicted and sentenced for imprisonment of 10 years," said an ECP notification. "As a consequence, Mohammad Ahmed Chattha, MNA from NA-66 Wazirabad and Ahmad Khan, MPA, Provincial Assembly Punjab from PP-87 Mianwali-lll have become disqualified under Article 63(1Xh) of the Constitution of lslamic Republic of Pakistan for being members of National Assembly and Provincial Assembly of Punjab respectively," it added. "Resultantly, notification No.F.2(5)/2024-Cord(1)dated 16th February 2024 to the extent of Mohammad Ahmed Chattha and notification No.F.2(6)/2024-Cord dated 17tt February, 2024 to the extent of Ahmad Khan as returned candidates, are hereby recalled with immediate effect." The ATC in Sargodha had convicted and sentenced Chattha, MNA from NA-66 Wazirabad, and Bhachar MPA from PP-87 Mianwali-lll and the opposition leader in Punjab Assembly – to 10-years imprisonment for violence on May 9, 2023. Similarly, the ATC-lll, Lahore, had convicted Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary and awarded 10-year jail term to him in a case stemming from the May 9 violence – the attacks on the military installation by the PTI supporters following the arrest of party founder Imran Khan in a corruption case. As a result, several PTI leaders and workers were arrested and tried in different courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan's nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. Last week, the two ATCs found dozens of PTI leaders and workers - including Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, Ejaz Chaudhary and Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar - guilty of aiding and abetting the rioting on May 9, 2023 and sentenced them to various prison terms. PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was, however, among the few, who were acquitted of the charges in one of the cases registered in Lahore. The verdicts came before completion of the August deadline set by the Supreme Court for wrapping up the May 9 cases. The Sargodha ATC sentenced 32 people, including 10 years in prison to Bhachar and Chattha. The Mianwali police had registered the case against PTI lawmakers, workers and supporters for creating anarchy, resorting to arson and inciting people to vandalism. The Lahore ATC sentenced eight PTI leaders to 10 years in prison for creating anarchy and resorting to arson at Lahore's Sherpao bridge. The ATC judge, however, acquitted six PTI leaders and workers, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, in the same case.

Punjab Assembly turns rowdy as MPAs come to blows
Two PTI lawmakers in the Punjab Assembly were suspended for 15-sittings for their allegedly unruly behavior as the opposition party protested against the de-seating of three of its members following the orders of two anti-terrorism courts (ATCs) in May 9 rioting cases. As the house resumed proceedings on Monday under the chairmanship of Acting Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channer, the opposition lawmakers entered the assembly hall chanting slogans in protest against the disqualification of PTI's three lawmakers. These lawmakers including Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar were found guilty of rioting on May 9, 2023 following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. After the ATCs July 22 order, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) also announced their de-seating. Responding to the PTI members' protest, Punjab Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman stated that the opposition was violating its commitment to act in accordance with Rule 223 of the Rules of Procedure. Deputy Leader of Opposition Muhammad Moeenuddin Riaz requested the chair to stop the proceedings on the assembly's agenda as he sought permission to speak on the sentences awarded to the PTI leaders. Minister Rehman said that Bhachar is like their brother but it is not the government which sentenced him to 10 years of prison. "He has been sentenced by a court over his offence," he added. Acting Speaker Channer said the opposition could not be allowed to discuss court verdicts. He, however, allowed the opposition to express solidarity with the leader of the opposition. As PTI's MPAs criticized the government's response to the ATCs verdicts, the treasury lawmakers lambasted the PTI for its alleged role in May 9 acts of vandalism. PTI's chief whip Rana Shahbaz Ahmad placed the Holy Quran on his head and asked the house if he looked like a terrorist and if that was not the case then why different FIRs were registered against him for alleged acts of terror. Acting Speaker Channer urged Ahmad not to use the Holy Quran for politics. The opposition, however, staged a token boycott for alleged breach of their privilege. When the PTI MPAs returned, opposition lawmaker Khalid Nisar Dogar rushed towards the treasury benches and slapped PML-N lawmaker Hassan Riaz for allegedly using abusive language. This caused a major commotion in the house, with dozens of treasury and opposition lawmakers facing off on the assembly floor. Some senior members intervened to defuse the tension. The acting speaker condemned the act of violence, stating that such behavior is unacceptable. The chair adjourned the proceedings for five minutes and summoned lawmakers of both sides to his chamber. When the house resumed sitting, both sides condemned the incident. Treasury lawmakers said attacking someone was highly regrettable while the deputy opposition leader said that using derogatory and abusive language was also not good. Riaz said according to an order of Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, such matters should be referred to the house's ethics committee. Acting Speaker Channer described it as the blackest day in the assembly's history. He said this issue concerned the dignity of the house. He later suspended PTI's Nisar Dogar for 15-sitting. As the opposition MPAs were leaving the house chanting slogans, one PTI MPA, Sheikh Imtiaz, pointed out the lack of quorum. Channer responded that the quorum is complete. However, Imtiaz insisted that there were not enough lawmakers in the house to continue its proceedings. Irked by his insistence, the acting speaker also suspended Sheikh Imtiaz for 15 sittings. After completing agenda items, Channer adjourned proceedings till 2pm today. As lawmakers from both sides came into the media hall, they once again got into an altercation with some private members reportedly using abusive language against PTI's lawmakers. The PTI MPAs termed the act of the members as hooliganism, adding they are being cornered but they will not bow before fascism and cruelty.

K-P CM overseeing Tirah crisis: adviser
Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chief minister, has said Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur is personally overseeing the Tirah incident and has summoned a jirga of tribal elders in Peshawar to hear their concerns. "The CM is in constant contact with the relevant administration [to address the crisis]," Saif said in a statement on Monday. According to the adviser, the government is deeply saddened by the tragedy. Five people died and 17 others sustained injuries on Sunday when protesters were fired upon during a protest outside a military installation at the Bagh Maidan area of Tirah Valley of the Khyber district against the killing of a girl . Both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and CM Gandapur condemned the shooting. "We have announced Rs10 million each in compensation for those killed and Rs2.5 million for each of the injured. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the affected families and will remain beside them during this time of grief and sorrow," he added. He said the K-P government last week convened an All Parties Conference (APC) to prevent such incidents in the future. However, he lamented that opposition parties as well as K-P Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, boycotted the conference, displaying a non-serious behavior. Meanwhile, PTI's K-P Organizational Committee, in an emergency meeting, strongly condemned ongoing "state violence" against peaceful citizens across the K-P, especially in the merged districts, which constituted the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) till early 2018. The committee unanimously asserted that extended military deployment under Article 245 of the Constitution has created an unchecked environment of force and ineffective accountability, violating basic rights and disrupting local peace. It made a strong demand to the federal government to revoke all notifications issued under Article 245 within 15 days and to formally announce the withdrawal of military forces from the merged districts. All PTI members in the KP Assembly were instructed to immediately present a resolution based on this demand and to ensure its passage with support from other parties. The committee further directed that the K-P advocate general (AG) be instructed to file an urgent petition in the Supreme Court to lift the stay order issued on December 22, 2023, which has suspended the Peshawar High Court's ruling limiting the scope of Article 245.
