Italy's Bussi betters own hour world record

Straits Times11-05-2025
Italy's Vittoria Bussi broke her own hour world record when she covered 50.455 km at the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on Saturday, cycling's world governing body the UCI, said in a statement.
Bussi held the women's hour record from 2018-2021 and became the first woman to break the 50-km barrier in October 2023 when she reclaimed the record from Ellen van Dijk of the Netherlands, covering 50.267 km.
The 38-year-old mathematics PhD attempted to better her own record on Friday but stopped after the halfway mark, before achieving the feat in a fresh attempt the following day.
"This record has always been really special to me as an athlete and as a person," Bussi said in a statement released by the UCI.
"The hour taught me that one of the most important things in life is to understand the preciousness of time in every single instant of our life." REUTERS

In a document released on Wednesday night, China's official sporting body said it would encourage cities, businesses, schools and villages to "vigorously develop tennis" and build a new training system to develop top talent. The document said China would strive to "cultivate more than 10 high-level professional players (ranked in the top 100 in the world) and more than 100 professional players and coaches active in international competitions". China has seen growing enthusiasm for tennis since Zheng Qinwen, 22, became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year. Chinese tennis players have also become more visible at Grand Slam tournaments and on the ATP tour, including Zhang Shuai, Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing. Chine aims to establish 10 "strong tennis provinces" and "100 strong tennis cities" with youth training centres and tens of thousands of youth tennis clubs, the document said. China will strengthen the "tennis tournament economy" to expand the flow of tennis tournaments and drive the growth of tennis consumption, as well as promoting tennis leisure and tourism routes. Messi's Miami in Leagues Cup quarters as new format fuels goals, ratings surge

Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images/ File Photo The Leagues Cup 2025 has reached its quarter-final stage, with four enticing MLS-Liga MX matchups set for Wednesday, showcasing the tournament's revamped format that has seen more goals and boosted commercial interest and fan engagement. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami headline the quarter-final contenders, while Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL and MLS outfit Seattle Sounders are also among the favourites heading into the last eight. Through Phase One of the tournament, average match viewership reached 1.43 million, up 62% from 2024, across MLS Season Pass, Apple TV+, linear broadcasters in North America, and third-party platforms, organisers told Reuters on Wednesday. Corporate sponsor revenue is up 13% year-on-year, with Walmart and Ocean Spray added as new partners. Digital and social media consumption has also risen sharply, organisers said. On the pitch, the absence of draws and penalty shootouts following 90 minutes has led to an average of 3.37 goals per game. This figure surpasses regular-season scoring rates in MLS, Liga MX and several leading European leagues, according to organisers. "It really starts with the competition and this new format," Leagues Cup executive director Thomas Mayo told Reuters. "The level of play is very high. They're all arm in arm at the penalty shootouts and there's some real emotion. It means a lot to them. It's a tough competition." This year's tournament features all 18 Liga MX teams and 18 qualifying MLS teams and the four quarter-finals will pit MLS clubs against Liga MX opponents, reinforcing the cross-border rivalry at the heart of the competition's redesign. Matches between the two leagues have been closely contested, with points shared evenly between MLS and Liga MX sides. Attendance figures are tracking closely with the 2024 edition, and organisers anticipate good crowds for Wednesday's games. The tournament's stakes are high, with automatic qualification for the Concacaf Champions Cup guaranteed for the winner of the third-place match and both finalists. The champion will secure direct entry into the Champions Cup Round of 16. REUTERS

Gauff splits with coach Daly ahead of U.S. Open

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox FILE PHOTO: Aug 14, 2025; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Coco Gauff (USA) awaits the serve from Lucia Bronzetti (ITA) during the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images/ File Photo Two-times Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff has parted ways with coach Matthew Daly just days before the start of the U.S. Open, ESPN reported on Wednesday. World number three Gauff will continue to work with longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel and has also brought biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan. She was seen training on Wednesday at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York with both Faurel and MacMillan, who previously worked with world number one Aryna Sabalenka, helping her with her serve and forehand. Gauff's own serve has been under scrutiny. She committed 42 double faults in just three matches at the Canadian Open earlier this month, part of a season-long pattern that has seen her rack up a tour-leading 320. Under Daly and Faurel, Gauff enjoyed some of the best results of her career, including winning the WTA 1000 China Open, the WTA Finals, and this year's French Open. However, her recent form has dipped, with just four singles wins since Roland Garros and a first-round exit at Wimbledon. The U.S. Open main draw begins Sunday, with 2023 champion Gauff set to appear in a Thursday night exhibition at Arthur Ashe Stadium. REUTERS
