Italy's Bussi betters own hour world record
Bussi held the women's hour record from 2018-2021 and became the first woman to break the 50-km barrier in October 2023 when she reclaimed the record from Ellen van Dijk of the Netherlands, covering 50.267 km.
The 38-year-old mathematics PhD attempted to better her own record on Friday but stopped after the halfway mark, before achieving the feat in a fresh attempt the following day.
"This record has always been really special to me as an athlete and as a person," Bussi said in a statement released by the UCI.
"The hour taught me that one of the most important things in life is to understand the preciousness of time in every single instant of our life." REUTERS

In a document released on Wednesday night, China's official sporting body said it would encourage cities, businesses, schools and villages to "vigorously develop tennis" and build a new training system to develop top talent. The document said China would strive to "cultivate more than 10 high-level professional players (ranked in the top 100 in the world) and more than 100 professional players and coaches active in international competitions". China has seen growing enthusiasm for tennis since Zheng Qinwen, 22, became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year. Chinese tennis players have also become more visible at Grand Slam tournaments and on the ATP tour, including Zhang Shuai, Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing. Chine aims to establish 10 "strong tennis provinces" and "100 strong tennis cities" with youth training centres and tens of thousands of youth tennis clubs, the document said. China will strengthen the "tennis tournament economy" to expand the flow of tennis tournaments and drive the growth of tennis consumption, as well as promoting tennis leisure and tourism routes. This year's tournament features all 18 Liga MX teams and 18 qualifying MLS teams and the four quarter-finals will pit MLS clubs against Liga MX opponents, reinforcing the cross-border rivalry at the heart of the competition's redesign. Matches between the two leagues have been closely contested, with points shared evenly between MLS and Liga MX sides. Attendance figures are tracking closely with the 2024 edition, and organisers anticipate good crowds for Wednesday's games.
