According to India's shipping regulator Directorate General (DG) of Shipping, the incidents resulted in 83 deaths and 61 injuries.
'The majority of deaths were linked to other casualties, highlighting the need for crew welfare focus. Timely reporting and preventive actions remain crucial to minimise risks and safeguard lives. Continuous monitoring and corrective measures are essential to strengthen maritime safety standards,' DG Shipping said in its Maritime Safety Investigation Report 2024.

Sri Lankan Navy arrests four Tamil Nadu fishermen for crossing maritime border
Four fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu were arrested and their boat seized by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).Around 400 fishermen had set out to sea from the Rameswaram Fishing Port in 88 boats earlier in the day. While fishing in the waters between Thalaimannar and Dhanushkodi, a Sri Lankan Navy patrol vessel intercepted Navy seized a boat belonging to a fisherman named Muniyasamy and arrested the four men on board for violating the maritime boundary. After an initial inquiry, the arrested fishermen are expected to be handed over to Mannar Fisheries Department officials for further action. ‘Russian woman may have left India with kid'
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed its displeasure at the Centre's submission in a case that the Russian woman fighting with her estranged Indian husband for their child's custody has gone missing and probably went back to Russia. The two-judge Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi called the situation 'unacceptable' and observed that it was 'gross contempt of court'. The Bench said in its order on Monday: 'Her passport is seized. How could she get a duplicate passport? It could not have been possible without the help of some officials at the Russian Embassy. It is a gross contempt of court. It is totally unacceptable. We will be passing some harsh orders and direct for issuing a Red Corner Notice.' The Centre's submission that the woman had left India came as a surprise, as it had previously told the SC that she had not left the country, at least through legal means.
