What is alpha-gal syndrome?
Alpha-gal syndrome isn't your typical food allergy. It's caused by a sugar molecule called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, or alpha-gal, found in the meat and tissues of mammals like cows, pigs, and deer. After a bite from a tick, especially the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) or deer tick, your immune system can become sensitised to this molecule. Months later, eating red meat or even dairy products can trigger a severe allergic reaction: hives, nausea, abdominal pain, or even life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Once believed to be limited to the southeastern US, the condition is now spreading globally as tick populations thrive and expand.

Worryingly, many doctors still aren't familiar with alpha-gal syndrome, making diagnosis difficult and delayed.
The reaction isn't immediate either. Symptoms typically begin two to six hours after eating a triggering food, making it even harder to trace the cause. Patients often suffer for months without answers. And each tick bite risks intensifying the allergy.
There's no cure yet. Avoiding red meat, dairy, and hidden animal-derived ingredients is essential - along with avoiding further tick bites. For some, the condition may fade over time with strict diet control.
Scientists are still working to fully understand the disease's mechanics and why only some people react this way. Until then, staying informed and protecting yourself from ticks may be the best defence.

As in most marriages of convenience, Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy junior make unusual bedfellows. One enjoys junk food, hates exercise and loves oil. The other talks of clean food, getting America moving again and wants to eliminate oils of all sorts (from seed oil to Mr Trump's beloved 'liquid gold'). One has called the covid-19 vaccine a 'miracle', the other is a long-term vaccine sceptic. Yet on November 14th Mr Trump announced that Mr Kennedy was his pick for secretary of health and human services (HHS). Public-health leaders have responded with horror and disbelief. 'Robert F. Kennedy junior is not remotely qualified for the role,' said Dr Peter Lurie, president of the Centre for Science in Public Interest, a public-health watchdog, in a statement, adding that 'nominating an anti-vaxxer like Kennedy to HHS is like putting a Flat Earther at the head of NASA.' Industry types are similarly worried. Shares in vaccine-makers, such as Moderna and Pfizer, and biotech firms fell in response to the news. Mr Kennedy has a long history of promoting debunked health theories and claims about vaccines, most damagingly about the risks of inoculating children. He has said that 'there's no vaccine that is safe and effective' and has advised parents not to follow guidance by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the health agencies that could soon fall under his direction. He is a proponent of several unproven alternatives to mainstream medicine, ranging from the kooky but harmless to the actively dangerous. And he has promised to dismantle large parts of America's core public-health agencies—including the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—and purge them of the 'smothering cloud of corporate capture'. If he does make it into the job (he will have to survive confirmation by the Senate), what might that mean in practice? His Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, which the Trump campaign embraced in the final phase of the election, gives clues to some of his public-health priorities. But surprisingly little is known about his approach to other big issues, such as drug-price negotiations or government-funded health-care programmes. 'I don't think anybody really knows what it means for Medicare and Medicaid,' says James Capretta, from the American Enterprise Institute, a think-tank. What is clear is that Mr Kennedy has radical ambitions and that Mr Trump, at least for now, has backed him fully. In his nomination statement, Mr Trump echoed Mr Kennedy's favourite talking points, writing that 'Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation and disinformation when it comes to Public Health.' Mr Kennedy, he promised, would restore the government's health agencies to 'Gold Standard Scientific Research', end the chronic-disease epidemic, and 'Make America Great and Healthy Again'. Many fear that the opposite could happen. They worry that core public-health and research programmes will be shut down and replaced by pseudoscience. Those concerns are not unfounded. Mr Kennedy recently said that on the second day of the new administration, '600 people are going to walk into offices at NIH and 600 people are going to leave.' He has also suggested that half the NIH's budget be devoted to researching 'preventative, alternative and holistic' medicines. Although the likely deprioritisation of tackling infectious diseases is worrying, Mr Kennedy's mission to go after chronic disease in America is laudable. Nearly half the country is now pre-diabetic or diabetic and some of the methods he champions—such as eating healthy, pesticide-free food and exercising—are sensible. And Mr Kennedy's candid criticisms of Big Food and Big Pharma are a salutary counterweight to powerful vested interests that few dare to stand up to. One need not be a conspiracy theorist to see that their relationships with regulators that they help fund is, at the very least, complex. Yet precisely because of his bulldog attitude to industry, Mr Kennedy will probably run into trouble with Republicans in Congress, who have long relied on these sectors for support and may see his proposals as 'nanny state' and anti-business. Although several Republican senators took to social media to pledge their support (Josh Hawley of Missouri said it was a 'bad day for Big Pharma'), others reserved judgment. 'I look forward to learning more about his other policy positions and how they will support a conservative, pro-American agenda,' wrote Bill Cassidy, from Louisiana. If Mr Kennedy does become health secretary, the extent and duration of his power will depend on Mr Trump's continued tolerance for letting him 'go wild'. Unlike most of Mr Trump's loyalist cabinet picks, Mr Kennedy is a former rival and a recent—and no doubt conditional—MAGA convert. For now Mr Kennedy benefits from a boss who is not interested in health policy. This may change if Mr Trump is confronted with the type of public-health disaster that can't be ignored, as it happened with covid-19 in his first term. Or perhaps he will pull the plug once he realises that Mr Kennedy is after his—and his voters'—cheeseburgers. Just as Mr Kennedy's support for MAGA is conditional, so is Mr Trump's commitment to 'in sickness and in health'. Americans get more than half their calories from ultraprocessed foods, CDC report says

Washington: Most Americans get more than half their calories from ultraprocessed foods , those super-tasty, energy-dense foods typically full of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, according to a new federal report. Nutrition research has shown for years that ultraprocessed foods make up a big chunk of the US diet, especially for kids and teens. For the first time, however, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed those high levels of consumption, using dietary data collected from August 2021 to August 2023. The report comes amid growing scrutiny of such foods by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who blames them for causing chronic disease . "We are poisoning ourselves and it's coming principally from these ultraprocessed foods," Kennedy told Fox News earlier this year. Overall, about 55 per cent of total calories consumed by Americans age 1 and older came from ultraprocessed foods during that period, according to the report. For adults, ultraprocessed foods made up about 53 per cent of total calories consumed, but for kids through age 18, it was nearly 62 per cent. The top sources included burgers and sandwiches, sweet baked goods, savory snacks, pizza and sweetened drinks. Young children consumed fewer calories from ultraprocessed foods than older kids, the report found. Adults 60 and older consumed fewer calories from those sources than younger adults. Low-income adults consumed more ultraprocessed foods than those with higher incomes. The results were not surprising, said co-author Anne Williams, a CDC nutrition expert. What was surprising was that consumption of ultraprocessed foods appeared to dip slightly over the past decade. Among adults, total calories from those sources fell from about 56 per cent in 2013-2014 and from nearly 66 per cent for kids in 2017-2018. Williams said she couldn't speculate about the reason for the decline or whether consumption of less processed foods increased. But Andrea Deierlein, a nutrition expert at New York University who was not involved in the research, suggested that there may be greater awareness of the potential harms of ultraprocessed foods. "People are trying, at least in some populations, to decrease their intakes of these foods," she said. Concern over ultraprocessed foods' health effects has been growing for years, but finding solutions has been difficult. Many studies have linked them to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, but they haven't been able to prove that the foods directly cause those chronic health problems. One small but influential study found that even when diets were matched for calories, sugar, fat, fiber and micronutrients, people consumed more calories and gained more weight when they ate ultraprocessed foods than when they ate minimally processed foods . Research published this week in the journal Nature found that participants in a clinical trial lost twice as much weight when they ate minimally processed foods - such as pasta, chicken, fruits and vegetables - than ultraprocessed foods, even those matched for nutrition components and considered healthy, such as ready-to-heat frozen meals, protein bars and shakes. Part of the problem is simply defining ultraprocessed foods. The new CDC report used the most common definition based on the four-tier Nova system developed by Brazilian researchers that classifies foods according to the amount of processing they undergo. Such foods tend to be "hyperpalatable, energy-dense, low in dietary fiber and contain little or no whole foods, while having high amounts of salt, sweeteners and unhealthy fats," the CDC report said. US health officials recently said there are concerns over whether current definitions "accurately capture" the range of foods that may affect health. The US Food and Drug Administration and the Agriculture Department recently issued a request for information to develop a new, uniform definition of ultraprocessed foods for products in the US food supply. In the meantime, Americans should try to reduce ultraprocessed foods in their daily diets, Deierlein said. For instance, instead of instant oatmeal that may contain added sugar, sodium, artificial colors and preservatives, use plain oats sweetened with honey or maple syrup. Read food packages and nutrition information, she suggested. "I do think that there are less-processed options available for many foods," she said.
