'Your Computer Is At Risk': How Fake Call Centres In Chandigarh Tricity Duped Foreigners
Last Updated: The ED claimed to have busted a major tech fraud racket, following midnight raids on illegal call centres that were duping foreign nationals via spoofing and brand impersonation Pop-up messages, cloned websites, and fake support hotlines, with text as cliche as 'your computer is at risk" – this is how illegal call centres in Chandigarh Tricity played on their victims' fears, most of whom were elderly or non-tech savvy foreign clients. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed to have busted a major tech fraud racket, following midnight searches on illegal call centres in the Chandigarh Tricity area under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). It said these entities duped foreign nationals with spoofing and brand impersonation as a core strategy. According to top ED sources, these entities systematically impersonated global tech brands to cheat foreign customers, funnelling proceeds through structured shell companies, spoof websites, payment gateways, and later laundering them via banking channels and hawala. The operations were professionally disguised and run under the garb of BPO and IT services, the sources told News18. The ED sources said entities like Visionaire and Terrasparq have been operational since 2016, showing the longevity and adaptive nature of these networks. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? The sources said Faisal Rashid Peerzada, director of FSAL Technologies Pvt Ltd, was involved in spoofing, fund control, backend operations. Arshdeep, director of Bios Webtech (US entity) and a close aide of Faisal, helped mask Indian control. They said Sahu Jain, director of Visionaire and Terrasparq, had been operational since 2016 and was linked to US firm CTS Mobility owned by his sister Priya, who was a potential overseas conduit. This is not an isolated scam but a tech-enabled, well-orchestrated fraud ecosystem. They were using front companies in India, showing a calculated effort to evade domestic scrutiny. It also suggested centralised orchestration by Faisal and Jain, they added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 3 years on, Zira vows to continue fight against distillery pollution
Bathinda: A fight for the permanent closure of a distillery and ethanol project accused of spreading air and water pollution completed three years in Punjab's Ferozepur district on Thursday, an occasion that was marked with a religious ceremony and a resolve to continue the protest. Under the banner of 'Sanjha Zira Morcha', residents of villages around Malbros International Private Limited in Mansoorwal Kalan, near Zira, Ferozepur, vowed not to give up till the unit was shut down. Representatives from various social, labour, and farmer organisations, including farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh's father, Tarsem Singh, gathered in solidarity and assured continued support for the cause. The protest was launched on July 24, 2022. "After detecting the smell of undistilled liquor while digging a borewell at the nearby village of Mahiyawal Kalan on July 17, 2022, residents suspected the distillery was disposing of its waste into groundwater through reverse boring. Samples were collected on at least two occasions, and a team from Central Pollution Control Board and Punjab govt-appointed committees found toxic substances in the water around the distillery," said Roman Brar, a member of the Sanjha Zira Morcha. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo "The chief minister assured action but we are still awaiting written orders to permanently shut down the unit," he added. Parameters concerning toxic substances, including lead, chromium, arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyls, and phenolic compounds (undesirable in excessive amounts), were found in the water samples, with values above permissible limits set by the Indian standards for drinking water. High concentrations of volatile fatty acids were found in soil samples. Acting on the CPCB report, the Punjab Pollution Control Board filed a case at the court of Ferozepur chief judicial magistrate under Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. It led to a search operation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at seven locations related to Malbros International Private Limited on July 16, 2024, in relation to money laundering cases pertaining to environmental crime under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. With the case now being heard in the National Green Tribunal, the protest since the last one year has become more symbolic with less physical presence at the site — the industrial unit. Indian Man Arrested For Stealing Bags, Cosmetics Worth Rs 3.5 Lakh From Singapore Airport
Last Updated: An Indian man was arrested for stealing items worth over Rs 3.5 lakh from 14 shops at Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport. He was caught upon returning to Singapore on June 1. An Indian man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing items worth over Rs 3.5 lakh from several shops at Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport and the airport's transit area, The Strait Times reported. The 38-year-old accused is believed to have targeted at least 14 shops, stealing items such as bags, perfumes, and cosmetics worth a total of Singapore Dollars (SGD) 5,136, according to a press release issued by the Singapore Police Force (SPF). After committing the crime, the accused boarded the flight and left the country. But upon his return to Singapore on June 1, the 38-year-old was arrested, the police said. The incident came to light on May 29 after a retail supervisor at one of the shops at the airport noticed a bag missing while checking the stock. The supervisor then notified the police about the theft. CCTV footage reportedly showed the Indian man taking the item and leaving without paying. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that a supervisor at the store had realised a bag was missing after a stocktaking," the police were quoted as saying to Straits Times. The authorities managed to identify the accused after the initial thefts, but he had already left Singapore by the time they confirmed his identity. However, on June 1, when he returned and was found transiting through Changi Airport, he was arrested. The police said that the stolen items were recovered from the man, who is now expected to be charged on July 25 with theft and fraudulent possession of property. 'Offenders should not think that they can evade capture by quickly boarding a flight. The police will continue to work closely with stakeholders to prevent and deter shop theft cases," police said, as per the news outlet. In another incident last month, one of the two women from India, who were caught stealing from shops at Changi Airport during their transit, was jailed for eight days. Goenka Simran, 29, was sentenced to eight days jail after she pleaded guilty to one count of theft in dwelling. Earlier this year, another Indian national was arrested for stealing over SGD 1,800 (INR 1,14,705) worth of items from five shops at Changi Airport. A court handed Singh Sagar, 37, five theft charges for stealing items including stationery, chocolates and jewellery from Terminal 3's departure transit area in about three hours on March 23, Straits Times reported. Recently, the US Embassy in India issued a warning to visa holders and applicants, following the incident where an Indian woman was caught shoplifting items worth approximately Rs 1.1 lakh at a Target store in Illinois. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 18:29 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
