Rat earns world record for sniffing landmines in Cambodia
Ronin, a giant African pouched rat, has successfully tracked down 109 landmines and 15 other potentially deadly remnants of war since his deployment to northern Preah Vihear province in August 2021, according to the Belgian charity APOPO.
Record-breaking achievements
At just five years old, Ronin has become the most successful Mine Detection Rat (MDR) in APOPO's history. His remarkable achievements earned him the Guinness World Records title for the most landmines detected by a rat, emphasizing the vital role of HeroRats in humanitarian demining efforts.
Previous record holder
Ronin surpassed the previous record held by Magawa, another hero rat, who discovered 71 landmines and 38 unexploded ordnance (UXOs) during his five-year service before retiring in 2021. Magawa was awarded a gold medal for heroism after clearing mines from approximately 225,000 square meters of land.
Ongoing mission
APOPO noted that Ronin may have two more years of detection work ahead of him. His handler, Phanny, expressed that Ronin is not just an asset but a valued partner and colleague.
The humanitarian crisis in Cambodia
Cambodia continues to be heavily affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance from decades of conflict dating back to the 1960s. Since the end of a civil war in 1998, the country has struggled with one of the highest rates of landmine casualties globally, with around 20,000 deaths recorded since 1979.
Recent tragedies
Tragically, two Cambodian toddlers were killed in February when a rocket-propelled grenade, believed to have been buried since the civil war, exploded near their homes in northwestern Siem Reap province.
Challenges ahead
Although Cambodia aimed to be mine-free by 2025, the government has postponed this goal by five years due to funding challenges and the discovery of new landmine fields along the Thai border.

He added, 'This new route with Ethiopian Airlines represents a qualitative step in reinforcing the airport's role as a vital air bridge that supports trade and investment flows between the UAE and African nations. Court jails 2 for abusing drugs at Dubai Taxi labour accommodation
Dubai Misdemeanour Court sentenced two Asian nationals to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation, and banned them from transferring or depositing any funds to others, either personally or through intermediaries, without prior approval from the Central Bank of the UAE, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. The ban will remain in effect for two years after the completion of their sentence. The suspects were charged with abusing narcotics in a labour accommodation. The incident dates back to January 2025 when a supervisor at a Dubai Taxi labour accommodation filed a report stating that during a routine inspection, he found the two suspects in their room consuming a substance suspected to be narcotics, appearing in an abnormal state. He added that one of the suspects admitted their coworker had provided the substance for Dhs10 so both were detained, and the police were notified. A policeman stated in the interrogations that the suspects were arrested, and a cigarette containing a suspected narcotic substance was found in their possession. They were reportedly taken to the General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics, where samples were collected and sent to the Dubai Police Forensic Laboratory for analysis. Lab results affirmed that the seized substance was a dried herbal narcotic listed in the drug schedule, which had been stuffed into a cigarette. Additionally, the suspects' samples tested positive for narcotics. The first suspect claimed the substance belonged to the second, who confessed that another coworker, who was later arrested and tried, had supplied the narcotic for Dhs10, after he asked him to collect the substance from an African national.

Sharjah Ruler directs to launch 4th session of poetry forums
Wide preparations and strong African engagement Extensive coordination with cultural institutions across participating countries has been underway to ensure the forums meet high organisational and cultural standards. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Department, said the initiative reflects Sharjah's commitment to supporting literary movements in Africa and strengthening the presence of Arabic language and literature among African communities. It also aims to discover poetic talent, revive classical Arabic traditions, and build cultural bridges between Africa and the Arab world. Ongoing impact and growing participation The forums have already seen enthusiastic engagement across several African capitals, spotlighting emerging voices and celebrating the cultural resonance of Arabic in the continent. Al Qaseer noted that this initiative complements Sharjah's 'Houses of Poetry' programme across the Arab world, which provides platforms for creativity and cultural exchange. International recognition and continued support Sharjah has hosted African poets and featured their work in its cultural events. Some have even been awarded the prestigious Golden Qawafi Prize, presented by the Ruler of Sharjah.
