Tirupati district gears up for full monsoon season
Tirupati: In view of the early arrival of the southwest monsoon, widespread rainfall is expected across the district. District Collector Dr S Venkateswar has instructed officials to remain vigilant and ensure full preparedness to tackle any challenges that may arise during the rainy season.
Along with DRO G Narasimhulu, the Collector conducted a review meeting on Friday, issuing detailed instructions to officials from various departments. Emphasising the need for a comprehensive and robust action plan, Dr Venkateswar urged authorities to draw on past experiences to implement preventive measures more effectively this year.
Officials were asked to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Disaster Management Authority and work in close coordination. The Collector directed the establishment of control rooms at the district, division, and mandal levels, with dedicated phone lines and toll-free numbers to be made available to the public.
Panchayat secretaries and engineering assistants were instructed to jointly inspect tanks and canal bunds and submit reports on their condition. The Health Department was told to ensure that all medical officers, ANMs, and ASHA workers remain alert and that adequate stocks of medicines and medical equipment are maintained at all health centres.
Special instructions were also issued to the police, fire, planning, revenue, irrigation, and panchayat departments. Departments such as Irrigation, Electricity (APEPDCL), Revenue, Agriculture, and Horticulture were directed to take immediate preventive action. Special attention was urged for flood-prone zones identified during last year's heavy rains.
Reiterating the district administration's primary responsibility to protect citizens, the Collector called for full-scale preparedness. He warned of the risks posed by thunderstorms and lightning during the rainy season and instructed officials to raise awareness among the public and take precautions to prevent harm to both people and livestock and set up rehabilitation centres.
The meeting was attended by RDOs of Srikalahasti, Sullurpeta, and Tirupati – Bhanu Prakash Reddy, Kiranmayi and Rammohan, DPO Suseela Devi and other officials.

Dakshina Kannada reported three COVID-19 positive cases in May, and all three patients, who were women (aged 64, 57, and 29), have recovered and been discharged, according to H.R. Thimmaiah, District Health and Family Welfare Officer. Addressing the media persons here on Tuesday, he said that one of the patients was admitted to a hospital, and the other two received treatment at their homes. Assuring that people need not panic about the spread of COVID-19, he said that people should not believe in rumours. Presently, COVID-19 is not a matter of serious concern in the district, he said. Testing only at Wenlock Hospital Dr. Thimmaiah said that samples to confirm COVID-19 positive cases in the district will have to be tested only at the laboratory of Government Wenlock Hospital here. Laboratories at the private hospitals are not authorised to test the samples now. The government has given a clear instruction on the same. The sample test at the Wenlock Hospital began on Tuesday. The DHO said that sample testing for COVID-19 will be done in all cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI). Random tests, up to 5%, will be done in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases. Dr. Thimmaiah said that the Health Department is prepared to face COVID-19 with the necessary facilities. It has 5,000 test kits, six liquid oxygen plants, 213 jumbo oxygen cylinders and other facilities like functional ICU beds, nebulisers and ventilators in addition to the 480 oxygenated beds at the Wenlock Hospital.

Dalit minor rape case: Bihar government takes action against two medical officials
Acting on mounting pressure from the Opposition, the Bihar government on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) swung into action over the death of an 11-year old Dalit girl who was raped and brutally assaulted with a knife, and then succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The PMCH did not allot a bed to the girl, who had been transferred from Muzaffarpur, and she had to wait for five hours in the ambulance before she was admitted. In response to the outrage, the Health Department took action against PMCH Deputy Superintendent-in-Charge Abhijeet Singh, who has been relieved from his post. Kumari Bibha, the Superintendent of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur has also been suspended. 'Extreme insensitivity' The official notification from the Health Department said that the death of a minor rape victim has come to its notice, adding that detailed investigation is being conducted into the matter. It said that, prima facie, it had been found that the Deputy Superintendent-in-Charge of Patna Medical College and Hospital did not discharge his duties properly, indicating administrative failure. 'Superintendent, SKMCH, Muzaffarpur did not follow the referral policy and did not discharge [her] duties properly. Also, extreme insensitivity was shown in the treatment of the victim. Ms. Bibha is suspended with immediate effect till further orders,' the Health Department order said. She has been suspended under the relevant provisions of Rule 9 of the Bihar Government Servant (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules-2005. A separate charge sheet will be prepared once the investigation is complete. During her suspension period, Dr. Bibha's headquarters will be set as the State Health Department in Patna, and she will only be paid a subsistence allowance, in the light of Rule 10 of the Bihar Government Servant (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules-2005. Brutal assault, deadly negligence The 11-year old Dalit child was raped and found in a pit at a brick kiln in Muzaffarpur on May 26, according to the police. She had nearly 20 knife wounds on and around her neck. A first information report (FIR) was lodged against a 30-year-old man on the complaint of the girl's uncle, and the accused was arrested the same evening. The child was initially taken to the SKMCH and then transferred to Patna on May 31, for better medical treatment. However, she was allegedly left in pain inside the ambulance outside the Patna hospital for about five hours, and was admitted only after intervention by Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar. She died at the PMCH on June 1. 'No one will be spared' The Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Yadav visited the child's house in Muzaffarpur on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), and slammed the State government for the death by negligence and the alleged failure of law and order in the State. Attacking Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Mr. Yadav said that beds at government hospitals are sold at premium prices. BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary accepted that the death of the rape victim was due to medical negligence, adding that the State government has taken strict action against the top medical officials of two medical college hospitals. 'No one will be spared and the culprits of rape will be punished by conducting a speedy trial. Nitish Kumar's government works on the policy of zero tolerance towards all kinds of crimes. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty in the Muzaffarpur incident. The Opposition should not do politics on this incident,' Mr. Choudhary told journalists in Patna.

Kerala health department issues new guidelines after one Covid-related death in state
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health Department has issued new guidelines to curb the spread of Covid following a recent surge in cases. These measures include mandatory mask-wearing for individuals in high-risk categories, especially in crowded areas. The Director of Health Services has also instructed hospitals to conduct rapid antigen tests for patients presenting with influenza-like illness (ILI), acute respiratory infections (ARI), or severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). Covid and influenza patients should be kept in separate wards or rooms upon admission to prevent cross-contamination. In hospitals, wearing masks is mandatory for healthcare workers, patients, and visitors. Additionally, individuals with symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, or shortness of breath in relief camps are required to wear masks. Those at higher risk of severe illness from Covid—including the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions—should also wear masks at all times. The state reported 19 new cases and one death so far. The total number of active cases become 1416 and nine deaths.
