Indian railway station (Pixabay)
The history of Indian railways is replete with interesting facts and figures. India has toy trains that are in service atop the hills, trams that bring in old world charm, vistadome coaches for rejuvenating amid the scenic scapes of the railway tracks meandering around the ghast and bridges. There is one railway station in Indi that holds great historical significance and is dedicated to Indian martyrs as well.
This Indian railway station is dubbed as one of the last stations in India. The peninsular country is surrounded by neighbours on three sides and hence we have international stations too. The last Indian railway station in focus here is the one located in Punjab bordering Pakistan. The name of the station is Hussainiwala railway station. About India's Last Railway Station in Punjab
Hussainiwala Railway Station is located in Firozepur district in Punjab. The history dates back to the partition era. Beyond this station lies the India-Pakistan border. This station was once regarded as the gateway to the city of Lahore.
The first ever train that ran the tracks passing the station was in 1885. Then, in an undivided India, the distance was covered from Ferozepur (Punjab) to Kasur (now in Pakistan). In the past, it had been a hub of military and trade activities.
Operated Twice a Year
Regular trains do not run on this route anymore. However, in the a bid to honour the history and the martyrs, special trains are run on two particular days in a year covering a distance of roughly 10 kms. Northern Railway runs a special DMU train on Shaheed Diwas (March 23) and Baisakhi (April 13). Reportedly, a fete is also arranged on March 23.
Earlier, the route was extended but after rising tension between the two nations, the railway line culminates with the sign 'The End of Northern Railway.' Therefore, this makes Attari Shyam Singh Railway Station, commonly known as the Wagah Station, as the last station near Pakistan border that is operational. However, passengers need passport or visa to visit or else will be prosecuted under Foreigners (Amendment) Act, 2004.

Bid to revive J&K tourism: BJP leader plays cricket in Pahalgam; watch video
Screengrab PTI NEW DELHI: Jammu & Kashmir BJP leader Ravinder Raina on Tuesday played cricket with Pahalgam locals in a bid to revive normalcy in the Valley, which witnessed a sharp decline in tourism after the April 22 terrorist attack at Baisaran meadow. In the clip, the BJP leader was seen bowling and batting with the local kids of the Valley. The efforts are being made from several quarters to revive tourism in Kashmir as travel agents from across the country will converge in Kashmir this weekend to boost tourism in the Valley. The Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), which is one of the country's biggest umbrella organisations for agents with over 1,600 members, will be holding its meeting in Srinagar and Pahalgam from June 13-16 to instil confidence among the fraternity. Srinagar hotels and flights commanded a big premium before the Pahalgam attack as Kashmir was seeing unprecedented tourist footfalls post Covid. But after the April 22 attack, tourists already there left Kashmir in droves and those who had plans to visit cancelled the same. J&K is currently focussed on ensuring a safe Amarnath Yatra as they hope that will send out a message that tourists can return to Kashmir. The yatra duration has been curtailed to 38 days, instead of 52 days in 2024, and will be on between July 3 and August 9, 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Address of Pride – Signature Global SPR Signature Global Book Now Undo A total of 581 companies from various Central Armed Police Forces, along with personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, will be deployed along the pilgrimage routes to ensure safety of the lakhs of pilgrims. The tourism industry in Kashmir has been badly hit since Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam on April 22. The attack sent a shockwave across the nation, prompting the government to take kinetic action against terror camps deep into Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The Indian forces, in a big action, destroyed the terror camps of Jaish and Lashkar located in Pakistan's Bahawalpur and Muridke.

Katrina Kaif named Global Brand Ambassador of Maldives
Male [Maldives], June 10 (ANI): Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has been appointed the Global Brand Ambassador for the Maldives. The official handle of the Maldives National Tourist Board shared the update on Tuesday. In a post on X, Visit Maldives stated, 'Visit Maldives Unveils Katrina Kaif as Global Brand Ambassador for the Sunny Side of Life.' This marks an important step by the Maldives National Tourist Board to promote tourism. Last year, the row between New Delhi and Male erupted after three Maldivian deputy ministers made derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over his pictures from the visit to Lakshadweep. PM Modi had called for the Indian island cluster to be developed as a destination for beach tourism and the promotion of domestic tourism. The matter snowballed into a major diplomatic row, with New Delhi summoning the Maldivian envoy and registering a strong protest against the viral posts. The three deputy ministers were suspended, and they remain under suspension with pay. Later, Maldives Tourism Ministry data showed that the number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives has dropped by 33 per cent compared to last year. However, toeing a reconciliatory tone after a diplomatic row with India, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu stated that India will continue to remain the country's 'closest ally.'

'No MBA, just Indian jugaad': Harsh Goenka is amazed by a Mumbai rickshawallah who earns Rs 8 lakh a month without driving
A LinkedIn post by Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Rahul Rupani has gone viral for claiming that a Mumbai autorickshaw driver earns between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh per month by providing an unofficial bag-holding service outside the US Consulate in Mumbai. The post gained further attention after industrialist Harsh Goenka shared it on X (formerly Twitter), calling it an example of 'pure Indian jugaad'. A makeshift solution for visa applicants According to Rupani's LinkedIn post, the driver, identified as Ashok, started charging visa applicants ₹1,000 to keep their bags safe while they entered the US Consulate, where carrying bags or mobile phones is not allowed. 'I was outside the US Consulate this week for my visa appointment, when security told me I couldn't carry my bag inside. No lockers. No suggestions. Just: 'Figure it out.' While I stood clueless on the footpath, an auto driver waved at me: 'Sir, bag de do. Safe rakhunga, mera roz ka hai. Rs 1,000 charge hai (Sir, give me your bag, I will keep it safe, this is my job. I will charge Rs 1,000),'' Rupani wrote. He estimated that Ashok now earns between ₹5 lakh and ₹8 lakh a month through this informal storage service. Harsh Goenka praises driver's business sense The post drew praise from RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka. Sharing the story on X, Goenka wrote, 'A Mumbai rickshaw driver saw long visa queues at US consulate—the no-phone, no-bag rule—and had a genius idea. He started charging Rs 1,000 to hold people's bags outside the US Consulate. Today, Ashok earns Rs 8 lakh a month just by offering 'bag-holding' service. No app. No MBA. Just pure Indian jugaad.' Live Events — hvgoenka (@hvgoenka) Reactions on social media vary The story was also picked up by social media platforms such as Humans of Bombay. While some users appreciated the driver's approach, others raised concerns. 'What an innovative idea... With such ideas, there is nothing that you can't achieve,' one user commented. Another user posted, 'How come no competition for him yet? A vanity van offering lounge kind of services along with baggage holding service will be the next level.' However, not all responses were positive. 'I can't believe the people gave their bag containing valuables to a Rikshawalla. Unlike a shopkeeper, a Rikshawalla could elope with the valuables,' one person wrote. Another claimed, 'There is a locker facility inside the consulate. You can put your mobiles and bags in it. I have done this when I was there for a visitor's visa.' Legal and safety concerns surface Many users questioned whether Ashok's business was legal or safe. Some referred to it as 'unethical,' while others asked if any authorities had taken note of it. As of now, ET has not independently verified the claims made by either Rahul Rupani or Harsh Goenka regarding the driver's identity, earnings, or the nature of the service.
