
Pant varsity scientists develop high-yielding barley variety for 12 states
Rudrapur: In a significant breakthrough, scientists at GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar have developed a high-yielding, six-row barley variety named UPB 1106 (Pant Barley 1106), after 12 years of research.
The new variety is expected to enhance barley production across several Indian states, while also offering improved nutritional value.
The variety was officially released by the central sub-committee on crop standards under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and has been notified by the Union ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare for cultivation across the plains of 12 Indian states – including eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, and the northeastern region.
JP Jaiswal, coordinator of the wheat and barley research project at the university, said, "Pant Barley 1106 has consistently outperformed existing varieties in national trials conducted by ICAR-Indian Wheat and Barley Research Institute, Karnal. In the northeastern states, it recorded 19.94% and 10.32% higher yields than HUB 113 and DWRB 137, respectively."
The variety is resistant to brown and yellow rust, and shows improved resistance to blight and lodging — making it ideal for irrigated, timely sown conditions.
It also boasts superior nutritional quality with 12.3% protein content, surpassing HUB 113 (11.7%) and DWRB 137 (11.2%). "With its resistance traits, high productivity, and better grain quality, UPB 1106 is set to boost barley production and promote better health outcomes," Jaiswal added.
Barley, rich in beta-glucan fiber, is increasingly valued in multi-grain diets for its ability to reduce body fat, control weight, and manage diabetes—making the launch of UPB 1106 especially timely.
Anil Hafeez, an agri-scientist said, "The states targeted for these crops fall largely under humid to sub-humid tropical and subtropical zones, with annual rainfall ranging between 1,000 to 2,000 mm. The Indo-Gangetic plains have deep alluvial soils, rich in nutrients and well-draining, which is ideal for cereal crops like barley, especially in the Rabi season," he said. He also noted that improved farming techniques are making the acidic, organic-rich soils of Assam and other northeastern states increasingly viable for barley cultivation.
Farmers who have sown the new variety reported encouraging results. Ramesh Yadav, a farmer from Jafarpur village, said, "My friends in eastern UP said that they have seen a visible difference. The grains are fuller, the plants stand strong even after irrigation, and the yield has gone up. This variety has truly boosted their confidence. We will use this variety this year in our farms."
Gurmeet Singh, a farmer from Kartarpur village, said, "There's better disease resistance and the protein content is excellent.
It's helping us grow both income and health."
The new variety was developed by university scientists JP Jaiswal, Swati, and Anil Kumar. University vice chancellor Manmohan Singh Chauhan, director of research AS Nain, and dean of agriculture Subhash Chandra lauded the team for their remarkable achievement.

Study reveals widespread microplastic presence in seafood along Vizag coast
Visakhapatnam: Researchers from the department of marine living resources (MLR), Andhra University, have detected widespread microplastic contamination across all examined marine life as part of a recently completed European Commission project. Their study of 100 specimens from 15 different species of fish, shrimp, crabs, and squid – each with edible value and sourced from various landing centres along the Visakhapatnam coast – revealed that microplastic particles smaller than 120µm (micrometre) were consistently found in greater quantities across all analysed tissues of these marine life, including muscle, liver, digestive tract, gonads, and kidney. The most commonly identified plastics included polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polypropylene, and polystyrene, alongside other materials such as latex and polycarbonate. Two Indian universities, including Andhra University and the University of Kerala, participated in the EcoMarine project of the European Commission, which spans multiple countries across various continents, including Germany, Greece, Spain, and Malaysia. A compilation of scientific findings from the marine monitoring labs at these institutions was recently published online. Prof P Janakiram, Dr K Umadevi, S Geetha, and D Chandrasekhar contributed to the study from the department of MLR at Andhra University. In lower trophic-level organisms, microplastics mimic prey due to their minute size, leading to unintentional ingestion. Once consumed, these particles travel up the food chain, increasing their bioavailability within the ecosystem. For instance, microplastics transition from algae to zooplankton, then to fish, eventually entering the human food chain through seafood consumption. Leaching chemicals from plastic additives and monomers have been linked to endocrine disruption and carcinogenesis in humans. Upon exposure, microplastics can accumulate in human tissues and organs, potentially altering immune responses or leading to other clinical complications. Speaking to TOI, Prof P Janakiram, principal investigator of the EcoMarine project, said: "While the detrimental health effects of microplastics are well established, their precise impact requires further investigation. The medical fraternity can conduct extensive research to determine the exact pathways through which microplastics enter biological systems and the extent of their adverse effects on human health. " A separate study conducted by the same research team from the department of MLR has also revealed extensive plastic contamination in water samples collected from seven locations along the Visakhapatnam coast, including Kailasagiri, Rushikonda, Pedda Rushikonda, Bheemili, Pandurangapuram, the inner harbour of Visakhapatnam port, and jetty No. 11 (fishing harbour). According to Prof Janakiram, Dr Umadevi, S Geetha, and D Chandrasekhar, water samples were taken from both surface water and a depth of 10 metres. Gravimetric assessment and FTIR spectroscopy identified polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, and polypropylene as the most commonly detected plastic compositions in both surface and deeper water. The presence of these polymers is largely attributed to industrial activities around the Visakhapatnam industrial zone, as well as the dissolution of plastic waste such as PET bottles and discarded plastic items due to human-induced pollution. Based on these findings, the study urges the Pollution Control Board (PCB) to implement stringent regulatory measures on industrial wastewater discharge to curb coastal contamination.

La Nina likely to aggravate Goa's plastic waste menace
Panaji : A silent drift unfolded off Goa's coast between March 20 and April 10 this year. Pink and red specks began dotting satellite images — not signs of marine life, but clusters of floating plastic. Over a 10km-long stretch along the shoreline, these clusters map a grim and growing reality: Goa's seas and rivers are turning into plastic tides. While alarming, a deeper oceanographic force could intensify this problem. A new study by WWF India suggests that currents influenced by La Nina — a large-scale climate pattern that alters global weather, along with the northeasterly monsoon winds, could push floating plastic debris into Goa's nearshore and estuarine waters. 'La Nina strengthens the northeasterly monsoon winds over the Indian subcontinent. This, in turn, intensifies westward surface currents in the northern Arabian Sea,' said G Areendran, director, tech for conservation, WWF India. 'These stronger currents can carry floating plastic toward Goa's coast.' 'Once near estuaries like the Zuari, Mandovi, and Talpona, the debris can get trapped and even recirculate into the coastal zone, especially during dry winter months when rivers discharge less freshwater.' Areendran and his team are leading an ongoing WWF India study under the wildlife tech incubator programme of the Centre for Wildlife Studies, funded by the Ashraya Hastha trust. The project, titled remote sensing and machine learning-based detection of floating offshore plastic debris in coastal Goa, combines open-source satellite data with machine learning to identify plastic debris in coastal waters. Researchers aim to create a WebGIS dashboard by Aug 2025 for real-time plastic monitoring. So far, the team has tracked floating plastic till April. The data shows troubling concentrations within 10km of Goa's shore, especially near Panaji, Mormugao, and Margao. These clusters often form in convergence zones — areas where winds and currents meet and trap surface debris. Some of the heaviest plastic build-up was found near the Mandovi and Zuari rivers. These rivers drain highly urbanised areas — including Panaji and Mormugao — and carry untreated plastic waste directly into the sea. 'In February, heatmap analysis showed dense clusters of plastic near the Zuari estuary and Panaji. The Mandovi river, being the largest in Goa, contributes significantly to plastic accumulation near Miramar beach,' said Areendran. Further north, moderate to high debris levels were recorded offshore near Calangute, Tivim, and Pernem — areas that experience high seasonal tourist footfall and storm-water runoff. In South Goa, plastic tended to accumulate off Betul, Talpona, and Canacona, where swirling tidal currents create circular flows that trap floating waste. 'River-borne plastic is a key driver in how and where debris gathers along the coast,' Areendran added. 'Even the inland hinterlands are now showing plastic presence in coastal waters, pointing to unregulated waste flowing through smaller rivers and drains.' Goa may be India's smallest state, but it generates the highest per capita plastic waste in the country. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Goa produced nearly 12kg of plastic waste per person annually in 2019-20. Tourism, one of the state's key economic engines, also contributes significantly to the problem. A study by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) found that Goa's most popular beaches — Calangute, Anjuna, and Baga — recorded the highest levels of plastic litter in the country. At peak levels, plastic waste reached up to 25g per metre of beach, with a total litter density of over 200g per sqm. WWF's current project is not just focused on mapping the pollution. The initiative aims to support the protection of Goa's critical coastal habitats. These include nesting grounds for the Olive Ridley turtle and marine biodiversity zones already under pressure from microplastics and tourism-driven waste. Researchers hope the study will help policy makers act since without timely intervention, Goa's scenic coastline — once a magnet for biodiversity and clean tourism — risks becoming a permanent dumping ground for floating plastic.
